cities, without Government patronage.
The Constitution, the organ of Buchanan's
administration, has less than two thousand
subscribers.

paper published at Constantinople, says:
" We risk nobody's contradiction In affirm
ing that the American missionaries have
done more to advance civilization and pure
religion throughout Turkey than all the
other agencies, diplomatic or missionary,

Aaros Burnt. A marble shaft recently
erected over the remains of Aaron Burr,
in the graveyard at Princeton, New Jer
sey, has been mutilated and broken by somo
persons unknown. The shaft was erected
by stealth, no one knowing who put it there.
The Doo-Star. The largest star seen
in the sky is one In the South, called tho
Dog-Star. From calculations, it is known
that its distance from us Is not less than
nineteen millions of millions of miles. 0 tit
er stars bajrc been calculated to be forty
two thousand times more distant than this,
and light, which travels at the rato of a
million of miles in five seconds, must be
sixty-three thousand years in traveling from
