and its return has been predicted between
1830 and 18C0, but about 1639. The
truth of the matter Is, the exact time of the
return of a comet to our system cannot be
calculated with any precision, owing to the
attraction of different bodiea on iia way,
necessarily retarding its velocity, and which
attraction and retardation are entirely gov
erned by tho motions, positions, and differ
cut degrees of density of those collaterally
attracting bodies. Just as the return of the
steamers on the upper Willamette to Ca
nemah can not bo foretold with the least
cortainty their motions being regulated
aolely by tho attractive and repulsive forces
at tho different places alunu the route.
It is hoped tlmt what is here said will put
a quietus on the fears uf those who are ap
prehensive of some dreadful catastrophe
next Saturday. '' Wo may pass through the
very body of a comet, aud be unconscious
of its presence, and five seconds would not
elapso before we would be wholly clear of
it that is, upon tho theory endeavored to
be elucidated above.
