f 1110 most successful nook dealing

brought out lu England this year Is
"Tlio Yellow War," the author of
. which concealB himself under the pseu
donym "O." The author Is n man who,
because of hli political and personal
I Importance, was able to see much more
! of tho actual lighting than tho general
run of correspondents.
Mrs. II. M. Lothrop (Mnrgarct Sid
ney) Is engaged In completing tho
tenth of the famous Pepper books,
"IJen Pepper," which the taturop, Leo
end Shepard Company have In press
for publication upon their Lothrop list
during the present Bcason. The popu
lar demand for these remarkable books
Is continually Increasing; the sales dur
ing the past season surpassing all pre
vious records.
Miss Hraddcn Is bo sure of readers
that a story by her Is always welcomed
by the book sellers. She has one com
ing out Bhortly called "The Rose of
Life," a modem romance story of good
and bnd Roclcty, with a heroine as In
nocent and charming as Goethe's
Gretchcn. Tho book has glimpses of
the trivial life of the London season
and there is more than a glimpse of the
literary llfo 1n the person of a poet
whose fate Is the tragedy of the atory,
which for tho rest enda happily.
Mr. Alec Tweedle, whoso excellent
book on Mexico Is well known, wrltea
In the London Mngar.lno on General
Porforlo Diaz, whom sho describes as
a man who mndc a nation, and now
publishers are trying .o Induce her to
write a book on the general's life. As
no ono has yet written an account of
tho life of that remarkable man, and
as Mrs. Tweedle wbh twice the guest
of the general and his wife In Mexico,
she may bo prevullcd upon to write
such a book.
In view of tho success of II. Rider
Haggard's latest book, "The Brethren,"
and others that have gone before, such
as "She," "Allen Quartermaln," etc., It
Is amusing to hear that the llrst threo
books written by this gifted romnnclst
brought him In the enormous sum of
ten pounds sterling. As can readily
be understood, tho young author was a
llttlo discouraged by this showing, but
resolved on ono more shot, and pro
duced "King Solomon's Mines," which
mado him famous at once. .
The latest novelty Is a magazine
called tho Novel Magazine, published
by Arthur Pearson. It Is a novel
because It Is a book of Action
only. It Is a novelty because
It la the only Urltlsh magazlnn
devoted to Action alone: Rut It Is not
the first time such a thing has been
tried. Borne years ago a mngazlno of
this Kort was brought out, but It did
not succeed until miscellaneous articles
were blended with tho stories, so It will
bo Interesting to see If Mr. Pearson
enn make his fiction magazine pay.
Ily the terms of tho will of General
Lew Wallace nil of this author's prop
erty, both real and personal, Is left to
his -wife, without condition. Tho will
Is very short, containing only four sen
tences. General Wallace loft n con
siderable estate, and Mrs. Wallace will
have not only the revenun from this,
nut she will nlso, In future, bo entitled
to tho royalties from tho sale of Ills
books, which amount to a good deal lu
tho courso of the year. Indeed, tho
Harpers report that now, over 20 yennt
after publication, the demand for "Hon
Ilur" Is as great as ever.
