The Holy City la Pervaded by an At innephere of Oloom and Horrow Its Historic IMacea-Clirletmae In the Vil lage of llethleheiu. To the Christian world Jerusalem Is the Holy City. Tho mere fact that Christ once wnlkcd Its streets, that hu taught and sufTprcd there, makes It to countless tlioiimiiu!n one nf the most Interesting places on the fnco of the earth. And within live miles Is Uetli tehem, the (ilnce of IiIh birth. The Onrdeii of fletlisemnnc, the Pool of HI loam, the Mount of Olives, the tomb of David and Lazarus and Itachael are near at hand. Even those who deny the divinity of ChrlHt feel that Jerusalem Is holy ground ami that It Is the Holy City. The doubter has often found hN doubts Klvlng way to faith as he trod the winding way of the Via Dolorosa, and the scoffer Iiiih suddenly been forced baa come to Jerusalem. They add much to the present desolation by their own manner of life, and the walla with which they rend the nlr when they go to the Walling Wall, which U In a small unroofed enclosure about seventy-five feet In length, and In which U some masonry bellevod by the Jews to be a part of the old temple Itself. It la not only the poverty stricken Jews who come here to weep and to wnll, but wealthy Jews faro thither to mingle their tears, their groans, their walls with those of the poorest of their brethren. Not con tent with weeping and walling, they tear thcHr hair and rend their gar ments and beat upon their breasts In an agony of grief that at least has the merit of being genuine. They make real the lamcntntlons of Jeremiah, and are no doubt sincere In their convic tion that nil this weeping nnd walling will In time help them to again come Into possession of their own. The followers of Mohammed gather at the Mosque of Omar, which stands on the sup ik) setl site of Solomon's Tem ple, but the site of the ancient places In Jerusalem Is and must forever be largely a matter of conjecture. It Is u curious fact that Jews and (Jentlles. Christians and Mobutu- uiedaus, men of all faiths and of no faith, unite In calling Jerusalem the Holy City. They differ as to when certain things occurred, and the ex- uct spotH on which occurred many of the events In the llfo of Christ aa well as the exact day of his birth must ever bo n uinttur of conjecture, but all agree that on the hills of .Ion and Mo rtal! occurred events transcending In importance any other events lu the history of tho world. An Atmosphere of Horrow. There la no conjecture, however, In regard to some of the conditions ex isting within and without the walls of the Holy City. Ouo has abundant and indisputable evidence of the fact that It la horribly dirty, and that no other dty In the world - surpaaa It In the peimlUveness of some of Ita conditions when ono takes Into account Its ago and the time It bus had In which to make Improvements. The Holy City of to-day Is In ap pearance almost exactly like the Holy lorosn. of (o-day Is the one trod by the feet of Christ with the cross on his back when he went to his crucifixion, and no man knows tho exnet spot of the cruelflrlon, nnd yet ouo finds one's self sUiiidlug with bared head hefaro some of the places pointed out as the mkHh on which occurred events record ed In holy writ. The cradle waa lowered with great pomp and reverence, and was then borne at the head of th proceealou to the chap el of the manger. The proceaalon waa composed of all the blahops and arch bishops, In their splendid ecclesiasti cal robes, the consuls from Jerusalem, In their official costumes, rows of priests In their order, two by two, and lastly all th member of Uie congre gation who could still crowd In after them. Neral Msossr In Which a Beven-Foot Animal Waa Killed by Cowboy. A light worthy of being recounted In any tnlo of thrilling adventure was enacted last week on the Morrow ranch, which lies on tho Mount Hamil ton range extending from the observa tory south for mnny miles. During the last month E. I. Uoblnson, fore man of the ranch, had noticed that their young colts were decreasing In numbers with alarming rapidity. Al most every morning the mangled car cass of a colt would bo found. Tracks around the slaughtered animals told the story of Uie mountain Hon. A close watch was kept, but the depre dations continued ns before and the Hon evaded all efforts to kill him or drive him away. One morning Uoblnson. with a bunch of cowboys, was rounding up some stock In a remote section of the ranch when the dog with thorn started a largo animal In a thicket They tried to send the dog Into tho bushes, but he cowered away. Suddenly an Im mense California lion left tho cover and ran up n large oak treo nenr by. There were no weapons In the crowd nnd Uoblnson was afraid to send ono of the men to tho wagon for a rlllo lest they lose sight entirely of the animal. Accordingly they formed a cordon around the tree and let out their rlntns nt the Hon. The iinlinnl stood nt boy ami warded off the rawhides with his paws. The men had almost despaired of accomplishing anything when Selby Trimble, the crack rider of the Morrow ranch, volunteered to leave the clrclo and climb a nearby tree to endeavor to cast the rope In a different man ner. Ho did this nt the risk of his life. After repeated failures ho suc ceeded when tho lion's head was turn ed the opposite way. The other rlatat fell quickly one after the other and the animal was hanged then and there. Tho skin Is In beautiful condition and measures over seven feet from tip to tip. it Is at present at the Santa Clara tannery. Snn Jose Dally Mer cury. Old I. sly and the Lawyer. A certain lawyer, famed for high charges, had Incurred tho enmity of an old lady on account of tho samo. Wishing to get oven with him she consulted him about drafting her will. As she was a very wealthy old lady without nenr relatives, she had inuny charltuble associations to benefit, nnd the nccurato draft of the will roqulrod much patience, skill and time. Among the provisions she made a generous hcuuett to this lawyer and nominated him executor. After the execution of the will she called for her bill, whereupon the law yer, with the vision of ample fees In the protpective settlement of the es tate and the memory of the gcneroui bequest, told the old lady that under the circumstances he should charge nothing, but finally to satisfy her busi ness scruples, made out a recolpt lu full to date for a $1, whereas tho biuallest sum he could have properly charged would have been 8100. The old lady marched homo with her will, set herself to work, copied It out carefully word for word, leaving out the hcipicst to the lawyer and nominating a new executor. In the course of time she died, nnd the disgust of the lawyer ut tho con tents of the will was so great that ho Inadvertently let out the secret to tho huge delight of hts brother hiwycrs.
