OREGON AUTO-DESPATCH.
A Now Departure In Coast Enterprise
Has Been Established In This
City.
Poor old horsol Ono of man's most
faithful and enduring frlondsl Scl-
enco Ib rapidly soallng his doom In the
old channels of usefulness. If thoso
and tho descendants of thoso wham
ho has served so loyally for centuries
had prepared for him n rich paflturo
In which ho might live comfortnbly
to tho end of his tlmo and tho time
of his kind. It would havo been only a
just expression of gratitude.
Wo havo now, -In tho city of Port
land, something now under tho sun.
It Is tho business of tho Oregon Auto
Despatch, a corporation of this city,
organized a short tlmo ago for tho pur
Pobo of operating electric automobiles
for hauling freight nnd carrying pass
cngors. This company hns purchased fivo
freight trucks nnd ono passenger
coach and Is now negotiating for two
mora trucks and two additional pass
enger coaches. Tho freight trucks
have n capacity of two to fivo tons,
most of them being In tho lnttor class.
Tho pasougor conches havo six seats,
which will accommodato four pnssen
gers each, making tho total capacity
for each coach 24 porsons.
Tho motlvo powor for theso vehicles
aro storago battorles, whlcit nro charg
ed each night, nnd tho company has
installed a vory complete charging
plant In Its quarters on tho corner of
Fifth and Hoyt streets.
This Is n now doparturo for this
coast and Is a welcomo Innovation, as,
by the use of theso vohlclcs, there
will bo less Utter on tho streets and,
as each one Is provided with rubbor
tires, thoro will bo no wear on street
pavements. The tires nro solid rub
bor, with a flat surfaco of nine Inches
wldo on the larger trucks. They are
very oaally controlled and can bo turn
ed on a much smaller space than horso
drnwn vehicles.
Tho business of tho Oregon Auto
Despatch Company will certainly
bound quickly Into public favor. Its
suporlor usefulness In that lino can
readily bo seen. It marks a period
of remarkablo advancement In enter
prises of that kind. Tho Now Age Is
Indeed glad to announce Its presence.
rrKrcn or Amunoun rreaa.
In addition to Its other dUtluctlnns
the year IDOl marks tho completion ot
two centuries ulnco the llrt American
newspaper wok started, says Lenllu'a
Weekly. That paper was the ltoston
News Letter, whoso publisher und
editor wns tho postmaster of that
town. Although the News Letter con
sisted of a sheet of only 7 Inches by
10, printed on both sides, It was ths
only paper that England's colonies In
the new world had for over a decade
and a half. Philadelphia got the sec
ond paper established In America and
New York got the third. All tnee
were technically weeklies, but often
In the early days there wero Intervals
of two or three weeks between their
successive appearances. The first
dally paper In the new world was the
American Dally Advertiser, prfated la
Philadelphia. After nearly a century
had elapsed since tho Ilret newspaper
appeared on this continent or in 1800
there were only fifteen utillles and
100 weeklies in the United States.
The contrast between those days
and to-day Is striking. There are 24,.
000 newspapers and periodicals of nil
sorts weeklies, seml'Weeklles, tri
weeklies, monthlies and quarterlies
published in tho United States In 1001,
of which 2,400 are dallies and 10,000
weeklies. Any ono or two or three
of Now York's dolly papers of 1001
has a larger circulation than did nil
tho dally nnd weekly papers published
in tho United tat en In I SOI.

think they have to tell a story.
