Natural depravity of tht youthful mind wa fully shown recently In a North Side confectionery store, when three tittle girls entered the shop la Indian file and made a beeline for the candy counter in the rear. Their faces wore an expression of Injured Inno cence. "Well, what do you want now?" the old woman who was proprietor of thu place Inquired. "O," Mid the eledst girl, barely 7 jonrs old, jerking bur elbow express holy in the direction of ono of her fiinall companions, "oho gave you a nickel instead of a cent." The old woman .went behind the counter "nnd tcok out n tin box containing a mini Iter of coppers. Slid peered into tho box, she shook It, to ninke sura there wns no nickel lurking nmong the other coins, nnd then held It under the noses of the little girls, exclaiming sharply: "There, now! Do you iseo uny nickel there?" Without replying, the girl fllctl out of the Hhop, each childish face clouded by an expression of. hopeless disap pointment. "You wouldn't believe It," snld tho old woman, bitterly. "I wouldn't be lieve It myself If 1 didn't stand here nil day nnd bcc It with my own eyes. The deceits of children arc enough to drive me crazy. They look you right In the face with angel eyes and He to you as easily ns If their tongues were oiled. Many n penny I lost be cause I could not believe that mere babes were tryli'K to swindle me. When I catch them at It they run out Just ns those girls did without saying anything. That does not keep them from coming back here again, though. "The boys around hero are Just ns bad as the glrlM. Half a dozen boys were In here getting candy one day, r.nd they had got their enndy nnd hadn't paid for It, when a boy stuck ills head in the door, and shouted: Say, missus, your sign has tumbled down! His eyes bulged out as if he was scared, nnd my heart gave such a Jump that I could scarcely get out to tho sidewalk. Tho sign wns nil right Tho boys left the store by a rear door while I wns looking for the boy. Afterward they declared that they paid for tho candy when they got It. It is dreadful to think what men and women thew boys and girls will be when they grow up." Chicago Tribune. IN AN ANTARCTIC SQUALL. Not riiuant Kxperlence with Tetu Dsrttart at Ti I)erea of Vroat. Suddenly tho mlt lifted, nnd the trnipcraturtj, which goncrnlly rose dur ing n Knlo, by thin tlmo hnd fallen to 72 desrecs of frost. Tho first squall brought drift snow, and wo Buffered ftrently from froit bites whllo securing our little camp. Our rolndoer sleeping bngs, which, whllo warm from pre vious use, had been packed on thu sledge, where they became quit flat nnd froxen hard, so that when the gale surprised, us we had to thaw ourselves gradually into the bags. Later on wa used the dogs to thaw out the bags for us. They nlwnys liked to roll upon anything that was not snow or Ice, even wero It but a thrown-away mit ten: and they would turn round and round over It, imagining that they were warmer there than on the snow. When litter wo threw our frosen bngs on the snow, the dogs generally clus tered together on them at once, and soon after we could get into them. Dy this time tho gale was over us in earnest, and wo took refuge In our slcoplng bags In the tent, from which we wero not able to extricate ourselves for tho next three nights nnd days, in which time we expected tho Icy floor bonoath ur to break up at any moment. Our silk tent rapidly filled with a denso foK, both from our breath nnd from tho heat given out by the lan tern; n thick layer of frost soon cov ered tho Inner walla of the tent and beautiful snow crystals nhone down on us through the ventilation hole In tho bag. Tho drift snow burled the tent, and the snow pressure left us just enough space for our sleeping bags The dark little spot which we formed on those vast white fields was blotted out. Men, dogs and sledges all dtsap peared, and the antarctic gale it ruged over us found nothing but cold, white solitude. For three nights and three days we had to take turns in standing on all fours to preveut bolng smothered by the pressure of the snow. From time to tlmo the Laps Joined in melancholy nntlvo hymns, the monotony of which seemed In u remarkable degree to har monists with the rago of tho bllzxard over our heads'. We had brought a small aluminum cooking stove with us into the tent, and with difficulty we prepared a warm meal. Hut In the cold the luetal stuck to our Augers, and It was not pleasaut to have one's turn at cooking. We roasted the heart of a seal, but other parts we ate raw. Tho dogs wero completely snowed under. Soino of them had eaten the straps ot their hnrness In order to free them selves; but they were still unable to move, being froxen to the ice. Ccu tury.
