"If you are fishing and you see a bull-froc sitting near by,"' said Squire Bunday, the sage of the French Creek waters, "you might as well wind up your line and go home unless you kill the frog or get It away, for you won't catch a fish. I found that out long ago. "The way I dlscoyered It was that one day I was fishing for black bass In French Creek. I had fished for black bass many days before that, some days with good luck and others with the worst kind of luck. "I got to thinking It over, and I remembered that on tho days when my luck was poor a frog was sitting soraowhero near, every now and then giving a croak or two; but I couldn't see any reason why that should affect tho fish so they would not bite. "You Imvo to fish for black bass In French Creek with live bait If you want to make any kind of a catch. This day when I mndo the discovery I was out cntchlng minnows for halt. I was Ushlng for them along the shoro of French Creek with barbless hook and a bit of nnglo worm. "As I throw my hook In the water I saw a big frog sitting on a stouu at tho edgo of tho creek, not more than ten feet from where I stood. A nlco minnow started for my hook as soon as I put it In. Tho water was clear, nnd not more than two feet deep, and I could see the fish plainly. "Just beforo this one got to tho bolt Uie frog on tho stono gave a peculiar croak, loud nnd deep. Tho minnow turned like a flash and dl nppeared In the deeper water. "Pretty soon another one came edg Ing Its way townrd tho bait. It was on tho point of taking It when tho frog croaked ngnln. The minnow stop ped, backed nwny und disappeared. "This went on for ten minutes, I guess minnows coming up to tnko my hook, the frog cronklng, and tho minnows going nwny nt once. Then It struck mo that frog's croaking wiis n warning to the minnows. "I grabbed up a club nnd sent It (lying nt tho frog. It struck him und killed him. "Then I went to fishing for min nows again. In n very few minuter. I had caught every ono around there. I took my bait and went out after this. I wns having lino luck. "In less than an hour I had lauded ten big fellows, nnd was feeling good. Suddenly I henrd n frog otrlko up, off to my left, with n tremendous bellow. "I looked around. There sat a big green fellow on n stump. When I looked at him ho turned one of his big gogglo eyes upon mo, and I give you my word that If tho frog didn't wink at me, then nobody ever wns winked at. It was just exactly ns If ho said to mc: "'Oh, I'm onto you. "I thought I would fish a whllo longer, Just to test tho frog spying theory. Flvo minutes passed. Then tho frog let looso again. "I looked around Ho gave me an other wink. I fished for hair an hour, during which time the frog croaked ten times, and I got not so much as nibble. " This settles Itl' 1 said. "I chucked a stono nt the frog. It missed him, but ho skedaddled off tho tump and disappeared under tho water. . "I fished ngaliv In less than two minutes I hooked n three-pound bass. I landed him, nnd within a quarter of an hour I landed three moro good ones." Ilocky Mountain News. DISEASE IS A DEAR ARTICLE. lotclllsent Laws Mlulit Have Much Wuate of Hculthund Money. By curcful calculation tho cost of mulurlul fever In Texas alone In esti mated by Dr. Woldert to bo at least 15,000,000 a year aud probably nearer 110,000,000. Ono pcrhou In twelve In lomo plnces Is down with the dlscaso. What a good buslnohs plan dt would bo to savo three-fourths or nlne-tentlis of this wasted money by preventing tho disease. No physlcluu doubts tho possibility; the methods of prevention are well known and are easily curried out. The public, however at least Its lawmakers caunot bo brought to real tie the wisdom of such economy, Money can be found for "Junketing tours," public buildings of a political character, and a hundred less necon tary measures, but nothing, or next to nothing for stopping tho greatest loss to the community that from disease. For every dollur spent to pay public health officers nnd thu expense of pre ventive mediclno thero can bo 100 saved. It Is this financial aspect unfortun ately that must be emphasized, and which, long enough and loudly enough reiterated, may at lust bring about some attention nnd practical law-mak ing on the part of our legislative bod ies. Some philanthropist should glvo a 11,000 prizo for the bestg essay on tho subject, "The Expense of Disease to the State," designed to show the com mon people how much could bo saved by boards of health If made active and powerful by public money und support Such a pamphlet sent and repeated ly sent to every toter should In tlino establish competent public health otll cers, and then lessen the mortality rato by half nnd tho morbidity figures by three-fourths. For every death theto nro two years of tl knem and oven with our present kn ledge at least half of thlH wasto or money and life Is unnecessary. American Muguzlno. Looking Over tho Family, Sir.
