Little Known Mexican Indiana Altuoat Initenalble to Pain. Little la generally known about the Papuans, the natives of New Guinea. Although In the possession of Great Britain for centuries, the Island has never been thoroughly explored. In one portion of the Island Is a tribe of marshland dwellers. Owing to the pe culiar character of tho country they Inhabit, pedcsttial locomotion Is al most Impracticable. As Is usual In tropical countries, there Is a very tangled undergrowth, while tho land is too swampy to bo walked upon. Even In the wide stretches of shallow water canoeing Is almost Impossible, owing to the rank vegetable growth. The result of these conditions is that this most peculiar tribe have practically lost the uso of their lower limbs. .Their dwellings aro built in the trees above the water level. Their bodies have developed In such a nccullar way that they havo most enormous trunks, but the thighs, legs and feet aro so small as to bo useless almost. In fact, In tlgure and carrlago they aro quite apelike. There aro very curious races of men In the more inaccessible portions of Mexico. Most o'f tho people aro cave dwellers, but there Is rarely moro than one family In tho cave. The curious thing about them, according to Dr. Carl Lumnoltz, is that they do not feel pain in the snmo degroo as we do. They havo a delightful habit of pull ing hairs out of one another's heads, but this gives them scarcely any pain at all. They tear out tho hairs ex actly as wo should tear out tho tall of a horse. These inferior races feel pain to a far less extent than In the case of a civilised man. Dr. Oarl Lumholtz once pulled six hairs at a time from tho head of a sleeping child, and It had no effect upon It at all. Then he asked for more, but without effect At last, when twenty-three hairs were pulled out at one stroke, the child scratched its head a little and slept on. The poor among some of the Chinese have a peculiar custom of giv ing their children in pledgo to their crodltors. First of all, tho parents go b'eforo a Judgo and make a statement of tho case, after which tho scrivener draws up a deed of sale. Then tho deed is signed by the scrivener, follow ing which tho father of tho boy smears tho palm of his right hand In coarse Ink and places it upon tho deed. This Ink Is much the same as the printer's ink that Is used by us. After tho wholo of tho hand has been Imprinted upon tho deed, tho father goes through tho samo treatment with tho sole of his right foot Then the mother goes through the ceremony, at the end of which tho parents receive the money and deliver over tho child. The natives of northwest Mexico havo a curious method of doing their courting or at least the woman has. All tho courting is done by tho wom an. When tho young peoplo meet at fensts tho damsel puts her eyes upon a certain member of tho opposlto sex, and then attracts his attention by dancing boforo him. yhilo sho does this sho persistently keeps her back toward him. This Is tho sign that alio wishes him to become hor husbaud. After a time, when tho courting has proceeded a Uttlo further, she sits down near him and begins pulling his blanket away from him. Then sho sings to him in a gentlo, soft' voice. At last tho matter Is entirely settled by the girl pitching stones at the swain, for if ho throws thesu bnck at her It Is a sign that they are be trothed, Other very rcmarkablo tribes have Just been discovered by tho chief med ical ofllccr of Papua. Ho made two interesting discoveries while exploring tho western portion of tho territory. Tho principal trlbu which ho discov ered during his peregrinations consists of dwarfs, who have enormous webbed feet Theso dwarfs build their dwell ings In tho center of swamps, which they aro ablo to cross with greut rupldlty. Tho other tribe consists of dwarfs, but their feet aro not webbed. They are, however, particularly wild and repulsive cannibals. Chicago Chronicle. BUSY TOOTHPICK INDUSTRY. Japuneee Make Heat Toothplcka-Kaon cuoua Product of Main Mill. "The fame of Atnerlcuu umuufac tures may ho auld to be In everybody's mouth," said tho representative of a Maine toothpick factory. "Up In Maine, and particularly In Franklin County's wldo stretches of white birch, are tho mills that supply 00 per cent of tho toothpicks used In this couu- try. "Poplar wood Is sometimes used, but tho whlto birch, on account of Us plia bility and foiest odor, gives a practical monopoly to .Maine foictts. During the spring over a hundred men are em ployed on machines each of which can clip out almost a million it day ol tho sharp wooden silvers that help tc keep down dentists' bills. "What aro termed tho fancy oi orangowood toothpicks aro not made In this country, nor could wo dupll cato them at four times the price, in tho country district of Spain and Por tugal these picks are sharpened like needles and smoothed laboriously bv young girls who are paid the inuulU- cent sum of 6 cents a day. "The Japanese toothpick Is probably tho best, and Is In Increasing demand. Tils toothpick Is fashioned from very line reed; and, while delicate and thin as tissue paper, It Is stronger and more pllablo than our clumsy product ",My experience teaches that the American habit of chewing a toothpick an tho street and elsewhere Is decadent. However, without this gratuitous ad vertising, tho demand Is constant." New York Sun. Htool Hawser.
