Filed nmoug tho correspondenco of tho Llghthouso Board nt Washington aro two brief epistles tho dates of which show that tho first was written about six months beforo tho second. They look precisely llko any ordinary business corresnondeiicc. tlior tvnm . eolved In good faith by the board, and 110 ono, reading them casually, would suspect what n talo of domestic woo hangs thereby. An Inspector, mnklng his usual rounds, discovered tho facts. An Irishman named McFadden had chargo of a lighthouse near one of tho lako ports. Ho was a small, wiry per son of about 00 pounds In weight His wlfo moro than made up for anything that ho lacked in slzo or niusclo, fot sho was n brawny, stalwart woman ot 200 pounds. Sho was, moreover, tho possessor of n violent temper, and thero wero times when tho timorous, undersized lighthouse keeper did not daro to call his soul his own. His duties nt tho lighthouse wero somowhat nrdubus, so when Mrs. Mc Fadden happened to bo in a pleasant framo of mind, sho sometimes helped her rather inelllclent partner with tho lamps. Sho learned 0110 day that her husband was entitled to an assistant of his own choosing, and sho suggest ed that since sho did tho work sho, properly, was tho person who should bo appointed to draw the comfortnblo salary. Mr. McFadden, however, promptly objected, saying that he. was certain that tho board would Mvcr glvo tho position to a woman. "Just send in tho application," sho urged, "and toll them you're wanting it for your relative, J. McFadden. Sure they'll nover know whether It's for John or for June, and I mn ,i i. work as well as any man." Mr. McFadden reluctantly sent In tho application, and In duo tlmo "J. aic Fuddcn" was regularly appointed first assistant at tho lighthouse. Tho pros pect of tho salary brought Joy to tho assistant's heart, and nil went well for a time. After a whllo, however, Mrs. Mc Fadden, always n trying person to llvo with, boenmo so Independent on tho strength of her separate lncomo that poor McFnddon found llfo with her entirely insupportable. Affairs reached a climax 0110 day when tho stalwart Jnno laid her superior ofllcer across her knee, and in tho presonco of visitors deliberately spanked him with tho hair brush. McFadden, of course, was unablo physically to retaliate, but mentally ho proved fully equal to tho occasion. Ho tiring to tho llghthouso tower, whero ho was safe from Intrusion, ho wrote tho following letter: "To tho Llghthouso Board. "Gentlemen I respectfully request that my assistant, J. McFadden, bo re moved for dlsobedlonco and Insubordi nation. Faithfully yours, "Patrick McFadden." As tlio llghthouso keeper had been tho Judgo of tho fitness of his own as sistant in tho beginning, tho board saw no reason why he should not now be a proper Judgo of Insubordination, so his request was granted. BRAIN FAQ" A MYTH. It la Eye Strain that Cauaea the Con dltloil Coilllllillnnl or. Tho so-called "brain fag" is n silly myth. Tho brain docs not tiro; intel lectual work does not hurt under nor mal conditions. It Is eyo strnln that causes all tho brain fag which tho newspapers havo been exploiting of late. Spencer learned this lesson and escaped tho tragedy of Nletzcho and Cnrlylo by dictating his writings, get ting others to do his research work for him. and by being wllllnir to en with. out vast realms of accurate knowl edge. Parkman was driven to similar expedients. Hut all tho rest groaned and suffered even whllo they wroto llttlo notes and postal cards Instead of lotters to tholr best friends. The result In suffering was Incalcul able and horrible. Thero aro biog raphies of these peoplo which do not allude to It; physicians and medical editors have been known who smiled Ironically at tho "exaggeration" of "vivid imaginations;" and thero are numberless fools who think they aro excused from all sympathy with a Car lylo or a Nietzsche. They do not know that tho misery of tho pain of ono at tack of tho nausea of sick headacho has not been equaled except In somo mediaeval or oriental torture chamber. When for some profound reason tho dominant and oldest Instinct of tho or ganism that for food and nutrition is violently reversed, It should be plain even to the stupidest mind that tho deepest wrong exists and that tho very springs of llfo aro being drained. Add to this another symptom almost equal ly terrible, inteuso pain in the brain, the organ controlling both character and llfo processes, and what dlscaso could bo more desperate? now many of our patients had sick headacho It is impossiblo to tell, owing to the dis inclination, especially in lotters and biographies, to speak of vomiting. Probably most of them did suffer from It moro or less. Ilooklovers' Maga zine. Aa Compared. Blfkins Havo you noticed how queerly young Puppklns acts of latoT I wonder what's the matter with him? "Whero shall wo put all that waste material?" asks the track superin tendent of the yardmaster. Although the government doesn't en courage counterfeiting, it employs a lot of Congressmen who pass bad bills. Our idea of a good manager Is a man who is able to manage a wife and an automobile simultaneously, If a man Is only attentive to his wife in public sho is willing to overlook a lot or private neglect.
