When the Northern Pacific Knllway
was selecting coal lands In the dense
ly forested regions of Washington,
snys the Booklovers' Magazine, tho ge
ologist In chnrge, having measured nnd
calculated the dip of the strata, said
to his assistant, "Jim, take your drill
crew over to section 13 nnd sec If you
don't And coal about tho mlddlo of the
section."
Jim, who know that the geologist
had never visited section 13, went off
on what ho considered a wlld-gooso
chase. When no arrived on tho
ground Uie deep cover of undergrowth
and soil prevented examination of tho
rocks. But he went to work, and in a
short tlmo sent his drill into a good
bed of coal, great quantities of which
have slnco been tiRcd to hnul trains
across tho mountains. Jim would drill
Into a cloud now If the geologist told
him there was coal In It.
Although It Is not always posslblo
thus accurately to predict the discov
ery of minerals, It can be done with
sulflclent frequency nnd certainty to
render vnluablo tho mapping of soil
and rock stratn which Is being carried
out nil over tho country by the Nation
al Geological Survey. This work, first
systematized In 1870, has progressed
so far that a third of tho area of the
United States, or about a million
square miles, has been plotted, exam
ined nnd mapped. The maps dcscrlbo
tho contour or changes in elevation of
the surface, the rainfall and dralnnge,
and tho geological formation, as well
as tho railways, roads, rivers nnd po
litical divisions.
Thcro Is no better trained or disci-
pllned scientific corps in tho world
than that which has this task In
chnrgo. It Is divided for field-work
Into thrco chief divisions. The first
to cover the ground is the topographi
cal, which, nftor laying out tho coun
try Into quadrangles of a square do
grco each, surveys minutely everything
within thoso boundaries, measuring
tho height of every hill nnd mouutnln,
tho depth of every valley, nnd tho
course, direction nnd exact location of
every wutcrcourso or other feature.

Following the topographical workers
como the geologists, who examine sot
and rocks, sink drills, cxnmlne borings,
measure the dip of strata and study
the geological formation of the whole
region. On the topographical map they
plot tho colors which by International
agreement represent the various min

who study the rainfall, the capacity of
watercourses, tho current nnd volumo
of rivers nt all stages, tho capacity of
lakes nnd ponds nil that pertains to
drainage.

though tho law Is very young, tho en
gineers bavo already been able to bo
gin six dams for reservoirs, nnd to
project a six-mile tunnel to divert a
river In Colorado.

reason I was forced to push It some
times beforo mo. aud sometimes tug It
after mo, till Uttlo by little I gained

had killed a Buffalo.
'Twas now almost eight and forty
hours since wo eat last; so that we
foil a kindling a Fire as fast aa wo
could; and as fast as Plcard skluu'd
It, I put the pieces of Flesh Into our
Uttlo earthen Pot to boll. We eat It
with that greediness that both of us
were sick; so that wo were obliged
to hide our selves In an Island, where
we rested for two Days for the recov
ery ot our Health.
