Bat Second aad Third, PORTLAND, OKBOO Tha Bart ai WIbm, Liqaort aad ClaM I THE GEOLOGICAL SURVEY. f When the Northern Pacific Knllway was selecting coal lands In the dense ly forested regions of Washington, snys the Booklovers' Magazine, tho ge ologist In chnrge, having measured nnd calculated the dip of the strata, said to his assistant, "Jim, take your drill crew over to section 13 nnd sec If you don't And coal about tho mlddlo of the section." Jim, who know that the geologist had never visited section 13, went off on what ho considered a wlld-gooso chase. When no arrived on tho ground Uie deep cover of undergrowth and soil prevented examination of tho rocks. But he went to work, and in a short tlmo sent his drill into a good bed of coal, great quantities of which have slnco been tiRcd to hnul trains across tho mountains. Jim would drill Into a cloud now If the geologist told him there was coal In It. Although It Is not always posslblo thus accurately to predict the discov ery of minerals, It can be done with sulflclent frequency nnd certainty to render vnluablo tho mapping of soil and rock stratn which Is being carried out nil over tho country by the Nation al Geological Survey. This work, first systematized In 1870, has progressed so far that a third of tho area of the United States, or about a million square miles, has been plotted, exam ined nnd mapped. The maps dcscrlbo tho contour or changes in elevation of the surface, the rainfall and dralnnge, and tho geological formation, as well as tho railways, roads, rivers nnd po litical divisions. Thcro Is no better trained or disci- pllned scientific corps in tho world than that which has this task In chnrgo. It Is divided for field-work Into thrco chief divisions. The first to cover the ground is the topographi cal, which, nftor laying out tho coun try Into quadrangles of a square do grco each, surveys minutely everything within thoso boundaries, measuring tho height of every hill nnd mouutnln, tho depth of every valley, nnd tho course, direction nnd exact location of every wutcrcourso or other feature. This provides tho now fnmlllnr "con tour" map In which points of equal clovatlon nbovo sen-level are connect ed by n line. Tho presenco or nbsenco of many lines In a small area Indicate! a ateep slope or a gentlo descent or a level plnln. Following the topographical workers como the geologists, who examine sot and rocks, sink drills, cxnmlne borings, measure the dip of strata and study the geological formation of the whole region. On the topographical map they plot tho colors which by International agreement represent the various min erals. LiiRt of nil como the liydrogrnphcrs, who study the rainfall, the capacity of watercourses, tho current nnd volumo of rivers nt all stages, tho capacity of lakes nnd ponds nil that pertains to drainage. An engineer hnvlng these facts pro vided for him Is nblo almost nt n glnnco to select n routo for n railway or a canal, or to locato tho best slto for a storago reservoir. It Is on this account, and because of tho excellence of the corps, that Congress tins en trusted tho Geological Survey with tho carrying out of tho new reclamation law, by which nrid lauds aro to bo mndo fertile through Irrigation. Al though tho law Is very young, tho en gineers bavo already been able to bo gin six dams for reservoirs, nnd to project a six-mile tunnel to divert a river In Colorado. Advonturo of Father llnnneptn. "Happy tho man that onco In four nnd twenty hours cou'd get go much ns n Sup of Ilroath," wroto Father Hennepin In tlescrihliirr his explora tions aloiiR tho river "Oulsconslii" In 1078. Father Hennepin nnd one at tendant named 1'leard left tho larger party In "n little sorry Cnnou" to meet n roenforcement which was to brliiR powder, lend nnd provisions, Hint wcro so greatly needed. Ho thus describes their progress : When wo embarked In tho Morning, wo know not whether wo shou'd hnvo anything to ent nt N'lght. 'Twas not every Day wo met with any Game, nor when wo did were wo suro to kill it. This put us upon Hunting tho Tortoise: but 'twas with much tlltll culty that wo could tako any: for be ing very quick of hearing, they would throw thomselvcs Into tho Water upon tho lenst nolso. Howover, we took ono at last, which was much larger than any wo had seen; His Shell was thin, nnd tho Flesh very fat. Whilst 1 was contriving to cut off his Head, he had like to have been bofore-hand with me, by snapping of my Finger with his Teeth, which nro very sharp. Whilst wo were managing thlssAf fair, wo had hailed our Canon ashore; but It seoms a sudden nnd violent Hlnst of Wind had carry'd her off again to tho middle of tho River. Pic nrd was gono to the Meadows, to seo if he could kill n wild Pull; so that I was loft alono with tho Cnnou. This obliged mo to throw my Habit as fast as I could over tho Tortoise, which I had turned, for fear ho should get away. When I had done I fell a swimming after our Cnnou, which went very fast down tho River, being carry'd by a very quick Stream. After I had recover'd It, with a great deal of difficulty, I durst not get Into It, for fear of being oversot, for fear of wetting the Woollen Coverlet nnd the rest ot our little Equipage. For which reason I was forced to push It some times beforo mo. aud sometimes tug It after mo, till Uttlo by little I gained the Shoar. Plcanl In, the meantlmo had killed a Buffalo. 'Twas now almost eight and forty hours since wo eat last; so that we foil a kindling a Fire as fast aa wo could; and as fast as Plcard skluu'd It, I put the pieces of Flesh Into our Uttlo earthen Pot to boll. We eat It with that greediness that both of us were sick; so that wo were obliged to hide our selves In an Island, where we rested for two Days for the recov ery ot our Health.
