Bow tha Animal Xa Moat BnccsaafnUy Trail ped. The grizzly bear la the only animal In America that Is really dangerous, says a writer In the Illustrated Sport ing News. We all know that anyonl rial will fight If cornered; a bull moose may be ugly and charge; a black boar will fight for her cubs or If woundod, but the grlnly, "Old Undo Ephralm," the "mountain men" call him, Is al ways ugly and ready for n fight. Bo well is this fact recognized that Tory seldom do any of tho old-timers tnko a chance unless everything Is In their favor. Their Immense size, coupled with their ugly disposition, makes thorn Indeed vory dangerous. There are many cases on record of grizzlies weighing 1,500 pounds. I hnvo never seen one that weighed actually that much, but hare seen soreral that Weighed oTer 1,000 pounds, and have seen skins tbnt were much larger than any I hare killed; so do not doubt the statement that thty grew to weigh 1,600 pounds. The most common methods of killing grlaillas are to watch a bait at night or to trap them, either with a large steel trap or a long pen with a falling door made of heary timber. The steel trap la the moat successful, although not considered rery sportsmanlike. I know of two cases where a gristly was shot through tho heart and yet lived long enough to run 160 yards and, In one case, maul a man very badly. Thoso bears, although killed early In September, wero In good fur, tho large ono (ostlnuttcd to weigh 1,200 pounds), particularly so, the fur being long, clean and very well marked. The smaller bear (estimated to weigh 800 pounds) was rery thin, but had good fur. The large bear was a veteran surely, as on skinning him eight bul leta and several buckshot wero found two of tho bullets being round, such as wero used by the Indians many years ago in their old smoothbores. FOX FARM A FAILURE. Animals Escaped from Island to Mains "Woods Orer Ice. A man named Sktlllngs, of Bangor, recontly started a new industry on an Island off the const between Machlas and Jonesport, Me., says tho Portland Express. This was fox-ralslng. He bclloTed that there was money to bo made In raising foxes for their hides, and so leased what Is known as Triton Island, some distance off the coast IUrlng secured the island, he went west and bought about sixty of the finest furred and most hardy foxes he could find, paying for some of them aa high as $500 apiece. These he placed ou the Island last fall and started his fox farm with every prospect that bis novel plan would be a success. Of course, the Island being some dis tance from tho land, It waa Impossible for tho foxes to get off and so fence were not necessary. This winter cam with Its cold weather and gradually the water between Triton Island and tho mainland closed slowly In until finally the wide passage waa covered with thick Ice which could support a man or a team, for that matter. All this had been going on so quietly that Mr. Skllllngs had quite failed to think of what this rapidly forming Ice might mean to his new Industry, and one morning he awoke to find that every fox he owned had escaped from the island to the mainland and had taken to the heavy growth of timber which covers much of this section nf the coast Mr. Skllllnga Instituted searches and acourod the surrounding country, but he has not succoeded In recovering one of tho animals. The sixty foxes, many of which wvra ex tremely valuable, aggreguted an amount of many thousands of dollara and the loss gives every indication of being a total one. Frog-rsss tat lstdta. The ancient templea and tombs of India with their Intricate earring are the marvel of all who a them, aaya the author of "Oltiea of India," and the wonder of the bebolder grows when he realises that the enormous blocks of marble and sandstone hare been dragged, by hand In many cases, up step and lofty cliffs. Some years ago Mr. Forrest, while walking through a remote village of the Dcccan, noticed a large ntono pil lar, richly carved, lying by tho road side. He asked the origin and destina tion of the monolith. It was for the porch of a temple on the brow of a precipice two miles away, overlooking the hamlet "The villagers drag it" said the head officer of the placo, "on great fes tival days. In my lifetime, sahib, they have moved it a hundred yards. And see how much carving tney have done." He pointed to some eight Inches of wonderful decoration. The officer was nearly 50 years of age, and the trav eler looked in astonishment wonder ing how long before the pilar would complete Its Journey, An old Drahmln standing by noticed his expression. "You English are in such a hurry," be aald. "There la the age of brass and the ago of iron. They come and they go. Others have come and gone their way, aud ao will you. Hut the pillar will reach the temple." His reply was the spirit of ancient India, which takes no heed of to-day, but having set about tho construction of such a monument goes steadily at work, satisfied to devote a thouaand years to it If the teraplo bo worthy to endure when it la done. Tho Two WillUms. The Kaiser's unqualified respect for the divinity that "doth hodgo a king" 1b revealed In an anecdoto found In tha "Memoirs" of Ludwlg Bornoy, tho Ger man tragedian. On an evening when "Richard II." was played at tho Berlin Theater in tho presence of his Majesty, the Kulsor sent for Darney at the close, and said to him: "During tho performanco four line were recited which are not to bo found In ShakBpoaro'a works." "It is true, aire," replied Barney. "They aro an Interpolation by Dlngel stodt in order to obtain greater clear ness." The Kaiser frowned. "In futuro such mutilation must be avoided," ho said.
