FORGOT HIS OWN LANGUAGE.
Lack of Conversational TJac Slakes One
Kuaty in Nativo Tongue.
W. B. Vanderllp, tho mining pros
pector who recently spent fourteen
months wandering nmong the wilds of
northern Siberia, says lu his book that
when ho met the ship which his em
ployers had sent to hunt him up ho
addressed tho captain in Russian and
was reminded that the gentleman
spoko English. Vanderllp sajs it may
seem incredible, but Is true, that for
a few moments ho was utterly unablo
to converse with the captain In his
own native tongue. Ho had not used
a word of English In conversation for
fourteen months and, being In a low
physical condition, his mind was con
fused. For several days he spoko n
Jumble of English, Russian and Koralc,
tho language of tho natives with whom
ho had lived and traveled. It was u
week beforo ho could talk good
straight English again.
There aro numerous examples of tho
fact that a person may become very
rusty In tho use of his native tonguo
If for a long time ho has had no con
versational uso of it This was Illus
trated onco by a man whose fame had
filled the world. It was on tho ovenlng
that David Livingston first stood on
tho platform of Exeter hall. Ills pro
nuclatlon was peculiar and his spoech
broken. Ho seemed to gropo for words.
After n fow sentence lie pnused to
beg tho lndulgenco of his auditors.
Ho asked them to remember that for
sixteen years ho had not spoken Eng
lish to a living soul, and that ho had
almost forgotten how to uso It
A fow may recall tho lnstnnco of
an llllterate.Britlsh sailor who entirely
forgot English. Ho was a castaway
nmong tho Solomon islanders and had
lived with them perhaps thlity years
beforo an English vessel found him.
He hnd been completely roduced to
the level of tho natives. His mental
faculties wcro evidently somewhat Im
paired. This may hnvo facilitated tho
utter failure of his momory as fnr
as English was concsrned, but tho fact
that English hnd once boon his own
languago enabled hlra to ncqulro a fow
hundred words of it moro rondlly thnn
ho would otherwlso have dono.
A highly educated Polish woman of
this city, who Is 'about to revisit her
naUvo homo, is now brushing up her
knowledge of tho language of her fath
ers. Sho says sho 1ms lived hero so
long that sho thinks in English and
that sho will certainly appear ridicu
lous in tho eyes of hor relatives If she
does not practlco her natlvo speech.
It soems qulto ovident that facility In
tho uso of our nativo languago Is not
nn lnalienablo accomplishment Now

8TUDIES CAT LANGUAGE.
Maine Hermit with Four Dozen Cats
and u Phonograph.
Caleb Johnson, of this town, has
emulated Prof. Garner, of monkoy
languago famo, by staying at homo
and studying tho speech of cats, says
tho Now York Tribune correspondent
at Unity, Mo. Johnson 1b a man of
liberal education, having been grad
uated from nn eastern college, who
prefers to llvo tho llfo of n hermit
surrounded with forty-eight cats, to
mingling with tho world and denting
with moro commonplaco situations.
Ho lives nlono on tho river road and
from morning to night makes rocordB
on a phonograph of his pots' cater
wauling. It is bis contention that cats hnvo
a medium of communication based on
tho mow, purr and moro strident notes
of their vocal organs. Ho claims to
havo classified tho different calls for
various kinds of food and drink nnd
maintains that ho can toll by tho In
flection of tho cat'B volco whether
tho animal wants water or milk. When
ono of his pots is hungry ho locks it
up In a room with a phonograph load
ed with tho receiving record. When
well fed and contented ho places a
machlno by tho sleeping creature nnd
catches rvory sound.
Some of tho slmplor folk along tho
river road look upon Mr. Johnson as
uncanny. Tho spoctacle of a tall,
gaunt man standing In tho middle of
tho road, holding animated conversa
tion with a big tomcat, giving back
meow for meow, strikes them as bolng
a bit sinister, no has recently Intro
duced an Angorn cnt to his school,
claiming that that breed differs radi
cally in languago from tho common
short-haired puss.
Tho hermit says that ho feels as
though ho had a largo family of hu
man being around him nnd has novor
tlmo to got lonoly. Aftor cataloguing
tho names of his many pets ho had to
study tho temperament and Individ
uality of each before ho could enter
upon a moro advanced curriculum of
interpreting their calls and teaching
them to respond.
no "Wan Homo or tho Talent.
Tho phrnso "tho talent" as applied
to thoso assisting In tho presentation
of a literary or musical program is
absurd enough to tho listener, but
must seem pre-eminently ridiculous to
thoso gifted individuals themselves.
Tho other night a brilliant plnnlst,
with a senso of humor and somo avoir,
dupols, was being admitted to a home
of wealth.
"Bo you somo of tho talent?" queried
tho butler in n stngo whisper.
"Well, I bellovo I am about one
hundred nnd soventy pounds of It," ro
plied tho musician as ho turned to tho
men's dressing room.
