W 1 14 I "9W . eji ejwij I I I Siniipyisisp In th New York fire department all acta of heroism are compared with what Jim McEroy did that Sunday morning In May, 1903, when he car ried his partner, McNally, a living torch, out of a burning tenement. A Trrlter In Everybody' Magazine tells the story: ' A pot of lard boiled over in a balct shop In the first story of a New York East. Bide tenement, and in a few minutes the building was In flames. When the policeman rushed through the house he found moat of the tenants in bed. He hammered on door after door, and seeelng retreat cut off from below, commanded the frightened peo ple to follow him to the roof. They did, and so made their escape through the scuttle, across the roofs and down through the neighboring houses to tho street. Then it was found that one man, a cabinetmaker, hnd been for gotten. Truck 8, to which McNally and Mc Evoy belonged, had arrived by this time,, and a Indder was put up to ward the window of the cabinetmak er's room. -Hut the flro had gained such headway that it was deemed un wise to ordor the firemen to mount the ladder. McNally found out that there was a man in tho building, and without waiting for orders he mounted the ladder and disappeared through tne window. It Is said that no ono saw hlrn.go, which might enslly bo, for tho smoke was thtcK and the excitement intense Ho might have burned to death thon and there but for the merest chance. Jim McEvoy had started for the truck, which .was round the corner, to get his rubber boots. As ho ran ho looked up at tho building, and as his glance swept across tho blazing front he saw at the window above the ladder a face. McEvoy forgot his boots, and, running forward, he, too, climbed the ladder, window, from cmfwytaolnzfiaRTn,.n:; Ho mounted steadily toward tho wiqdow, from which tho flames were belching as from a furnace. During an Interval when the blast seemed less sovore ho caught tho sill and dived through. No ono expected him to rcappoar, but in a nitnuto ho was back with what looked like a hugo torch in bis arms. The torch was Mc Nally, who was aflame from head to foot McNally, when he entered, had missed his footing and fallen head long downstairs Into tho Are. Never theless be managed to crawl up to the window again, and It was at the moment when he looked out that Mc Evoy had seen his face. Tho flames had eaten through his rubber coat, and he was burning up. To touch him was like handling u hot brand. And yet McEvoy put his hands round tho brand and lifted it through tho window. "Somehow or other," as ho says him self, ho "managed to. pass McNally down to where Shaughncssy was wait ing, and together they got him down, while the stream from tho hose played on them to keep them from burning to death. McNally died after days of suffer ing. Ills courage had been equal to that of McEvoy, whoso Injuries were severely burned arms and hands. The cabinetmaker, after all, succeeded In making his escape from the opposlto side of tho building. WONDERFUL COMMON NETTLE. Was) Not Always the DcspUcd Weed Tlmt It la Now. There was a time once when the common nettlo was not tho despised weed It is now. Peoplo did not root it out of existence or shun It ns a uulsnnce, but cultivated it for use ns food, for clothing and for paper manu facture. It certainly does not look Inviting as a food, and yet during tho Irluli famlno hundreds of poor peoplo oxlrftcd entirely on It, cooking the young plant ns a greon. Thero wns a method of ulnnchlng It by "earthing up," na Is iiow used for nea knle. Animals, whllo refusing to touch thu growing nettlo, devour It engerly when mnde Into liny, mid In Itussla, Sweden nml Ilollnnd It Is mown several times a year for fodder. Tho nettle belong' to the genus vrtlca. That term comes from a Latin word meaning "to bum," and It la in apt namo. The ntlng Ih hot as n burn and most painful. An old herbnllxt, Culpepper, says It "may be found by feeling, on the darkest nlghU" Tho common nnnn) given to tho net tle In some languages means "Unit with which ono suns," for tho fiber was used as a thread sovoral centurion ago. In Kamcbatkn thu nativen use tho thread for fishing lines nnd cordngo. In France itls used for paper. In Hin dustan nnd China It Is woven Into Ktass cloth, and the Kcotch hnve pro pared, spun nnd woven It into as good linen as the flax make. When King Cotton want to Ruropn n century ago the new-comer superseded tho home-grown plant, and It xauk Into a state of neglect, until a raw years ago, when the (Jormnns made an effort to revive Its culture Prof. Penlenux begged the people to turn their attention to the stinging nettle as a thread producer, and .Mad ame Itoessler-Lade tried, In 1873, to raise It on her own estate. Hut she could not make the stupid peasant follow her order, for they Hcornoii tho plant and her Ideas. Later, in 1877, she succeeded In exhibiting nettle fiber lu all stage, from the beginning to spun yarn, and It was a great triumph for her, Immediately Switzerland. Poland, Sweden, Auntria nnd North America hastened to grow nettles, and the noses tlint had been turned up as? sumed a different expression. The Chinese nett!e yields n fiber as soft as silk, nnd thero Is now In Dres den a "China grass" manufactory, do voted to the Industry of weaving cloth from this and the common nettle. Some men look to see If tho tide li coming in before casting their hteud upon tho water., After the matrimonial knot Is tied thero Is always a fighting chunco for happiness- ; COLFAX ADVERTISING AT ODKL BTEAM LAUNDRY.
