ANCHORING A SAND DUNE.
Worthless Tunnels Alonsr tlui Sea Const
Ileltitf Kcclnttucd.
So much attention hns been directed
to the work that Is being done In re
claiming the arid nnd scinl-nrld lands
of the West that the reclamation work
along the Atlantic const Is almost en
tirely overlooked, says the Philadelphia
Itecord. The familiar sand dunes,
characteristic of the coast from Capo
Cod to Capo Fear, whllo perhaps ar
tistic, constitute a mennco to adjacent
cultivated lands and aro useless in
themselves.
Massachusetts, at considerable ex
pense, has been endeavoring to re
claim the sand dunes that form so
largo a portion of the "province lnnds"
on Capo Cod. It has been found that
sand is readily bound together by grass
roots, and that If sturdy varieties of
grass suitable for sandy soils are plant
ed and cared for while obtaining a
foothold and maturing, they will grad
ually cover largo areas, transforming
thom from shifting, worthless lands ln
to fortllo fields. Many years of for
estry work in Europe has shown that
after tho grasses hnvo made a start
troes can bo successfully raised on
theso erstwhile snud piles, which niny
tli us bo mado to yield a revenue.
Bo mo of tho most extcnslvo and
mobllo sand dunes In tho United
States, howovcr, are found In tho
West, and It Is tne ambition of tho Bu
reau of Forestry to cover theso with
pormancnt forest growths. Along tho
Columbia river, In Washington, the
sand Is very light in character, owing
to tho largo proportion of mica It con
tains, and consequently Is easily blown
about by tho winds. In a portion of
tho lower Columbia river valley great
orchards hnvo been nctualy Ingulfed
with the shifting sands, nnd the rail
roads have experienced great diffi
culty in maintaining their tracks In
this district In passable condition. In
order to mako a practical test an to
the best method of treating these
dunes, a strip of land on tho Columbia
rivor between Willow creek and tho
John Day river hns been set asldo by
tho governmont for extensive experi
ments based on tho work dono by Mas
sachusetts, referred to abovo. In tho
East tree-planting plans for owners of
sandy tracts aro being proparod, thus
extending the scopo of the practical co
opcraUon begun by tho Bureau of For
estry.

Severn! European shipping periodi
cals are advocating tho use of light
ning rods on ships which convey explo
sive compounds. One of theso papers
notea that on a recent voyage tho fore
mast of the Umbrla waa struck by
lightning, which shattered It to bits.
The writer of tho article stated that
"if the ship had been fitted with light
ning conductors tho current would
havo been detlected from the ahlp."
The valuo of lightning rods for ships
was Investigated by Captain Folger, ol
Nantucket, Mass., a brother-in-law ot
Renjamln Franklin, the Inventor of
tho typea of lightning' rods In common
use the world over until a tow yean
ago. After Folger, many olher Ameri
can and llrltlsh shipmasters studied
tho lightning rod question, with the
tlunl result that tltousauds of experi
ments with masts tltted with lightning
rods adduced the bellof that they are
ot no value In warding off lightning.
As a matter of fact, abundant evi
dence exists In the archives ot Amer
ican, llrltlsh and French scientific so
cieties that thousands of ships pro
vided with lightning rods were struck
by lightning. Time was when naval
and army wagaxluea were, fitted with
lightning rods. That practice ended
years ago. It Is only among believers
In the efficacy of plasters for the back
and side, blood purifiers, divining rods,
jind fortune tellers that confidence la
lightning rods exists. Syren and Ship
