The first thing Is to look well after the diet and see that It Is wholesome and varied, and sufficient to quantity to keep up the strength. FACTS FOR THE SMOKEHS. Information nu to Tobacco and Its Use liy the World. A history of tobacco has Just been published by W. S. Point, an English man, under the title of "The Sovcranu Herb." From It soino curious facts can be drawn that will amuse, as well as Instruct smokers. It appears that the practice of einolc lng was at first a religious rite, and that It was taken lu the sixteenth cen tury from America to Europe, whence It spread to Asia. All three modes of using the weed cigars, pipes and snull were found In vogue among tho na tives of America by tho earliest dis coverers. In tho narrative of tho llrst voyage of Columbus we are told of the astonishment of tho Spaniards nt see ing tho natives of San Salvador pulling cigars, or, rather, enormous cigarettes. On his second voyage the Islanders were observed snufllug tho powdered leaf through a hollow cane. On tho mainland plpo smoking was tho univer sal custom, but still retaining much of a rltualtlstlc character. So tobacco went to Spain as cigars, to France (through Jean Nlcot) as snuff, and was carried to England with the pipe by Ralph Lane, Governor of VlrVi glula, on his return home In 10SU. lta lolgh, though ho adopted tho practice, was not (as Is ofteu stated) Its Intro ducer. England gave It to the Dutch, and tho Dutch carried It to tho Spleo Islands and farthest Cathay, so that almost before the century closed to bacco had girdled tho world. Not, how ever, without opposition. JCIng James' futile crusade against the weed had no effect except to stimulate poets liko Tonson, Ford, Sylvester and smaller fry to curry court favor by satirical abttso of smoking and smokers. Shakspeare never alludes to the" prac tice, and his silence may bo Interpret ed cither way. Sultans, shahs, Khallfs and czars put forth their might against It, and Pope Urban launched a bill against Its use, but nil lu vain; tho frail, wlthcro.l leaf was stronger than popes and kings. Mr. Penn has omitted a certain fam ous auccdoto associated with this bull of Urban, and tho New York Evening Post recalls It, as of Incidental Inter est. On the publication of tho bull a paper was found ntllxcd to tho stntue of Pnsqttln, containing a text In Latin, which has been, thus translated into English: "Wilt thou break a leaf that Is driven to and fro, and wilt thou pursue tho dry stubble?" This text If. found In Job xlll., 25. Urban madu proclamation that, If tho author would declare himself, ho should receive re ward. On tho next morning the pas qull was found signed "Job." Desplto both spiritual and secular fulmlnatlons, tobacco held Its own, and even what fow mouarchs havo done conquered tho church. Tho present popo takes suuff, tho finest lu tho world, which Is specially made for him In llaltlmore. Hut; fashions In tobacco taking, as In other things, havo varied. In tho eighteenth century tho pipe sunk In reputation In England and the snuff box arose. On tho continent snuff had always been aristocratic and leaders of fashion had rivaled each other In tho costliness and beauty of their boxes, tho exquisite flavor of their contents and tho graco with, which tho pinch was Inhaled. England never qulto attained theso high levels of ele gance, and In the nineteenth ccutury went back to the cigar. The Crimean war brought In tho cigarette, the usu of which the English had learned- from their allies, and lu lato years tho plpo has come onco more Into favor. Buf falo Express. A IMovltiK Mountain. v Most people forget that geology r not altogether a history of tho past. Tho forces thnt luitdc the mountains nre still going on. Bomo mountains nro growing, some nro wearing down. He- cnuso these processes tal;o a long tlmo to accomplish visible results,,oue Is apt to form tho erroneous Idea that they havo ceased, and that the faeo of the earth Is llxed onco for all. A case of geological action so rapid as to bo easily observed is the moving mountain In Hunterdon County, New Jersey. This "mountain" Is n knob, or mound, which Is sliding down the sldo of a full sized mountain. It has obliterated old turnpikes and roadways, and threatens to slide sud denly and do great damage. The land slide already covers twenty-live ncres of ono farm, and has destroyed the boundaries of another. At the point where the mound bus torn away from the mountain Is a deep gulch, In which have been found many Indian relics. The place Is so danger ous from ledges' and banks which threaten to fall that nobody has dared explore the cleft thoroughly. This geological movement has been so rapid that a new map of the county may bo necessary. Heavy rains, says tho Detroit Freo Press, Btlr thc'cntlre valley to fear lest tho whole hill turn bio and destroy everything In its path. Irish Emigration. Tho capacity of Ireland for sending out emigrants has been one of tho mar vels of tho world. During 1001 tho Isl and sent out 39,870 emigrants, or nine In every 1,000 of population, of whom 80.5 per cent were between the ages of 15 and 85. Even this large total Is soino 7,000 smaller than that of 1000. Name ot Japanese Children. The children of the Alnos, a people living In northern Japan, do not receive their names until they are S years old. It Is the father who then chooses the name by which the child Is afterward colled. t The wise man adroitly tries to con ceal his Ignorance, while the fool awk wardly attempts to display his knowledge.
