front Is stencilled. Sometimes the sten
cilling Is in a scalloped arrangement, each
scalloped edge with fancy serpentine
braid of black or contrasting color. White
cloth and silk usually are elaborated In
this manner. Another Htylish trick in
trimming blouse bodices, and often ac
companying skirt, is ns wasteful of tho
cloth as Is stencilling. In it the cut-out
portions of the goods are replaced with
coutastlug stuff stitched In place. With
free use of this finish, the cost of a bod
Ice Is Increased very much, without re
gard to the quality of its materials. For
illustration, see the small picture shown
herewith. This bodice waslilack nnd
white striped silk, the parts cut away re
placed by white silk outlined with black
and white silk gimp. The belt matched
the silk trimming.
Lace, 'net and transparent meshes of
many kinds are stylish for bodice mate
rials, and that accounts for many more
blouses. Very handsome blouses are of
heavy lace over white or delicately tint
ed silk, and these arc as fashionable ns
they are attractive. Nets are used In
similar fashion, but usually with much
elaboration nnd often combined with nth-

cr materials, A bodice into which net
entered appears in the center of the next
picture. It was white mousseline finish
ed with black corded net and topped by
n cream lace collar and ruffle. The skirt
of this gown was cream lace orer white
silk and the qash was pale blue Loulslue
satin. Black aud white combinations of
this general order hare full Indorsement,
and deserve it. Most of them are hand'
some. Altogether, the combination Is
the safest stylish one with which to ex
periment. Aside from such recent styl
ish developments as these, there are
available for blouses all the schemes of
trimmlne that bare the indorsement of
fasfcloaablM for othar forms of bodices.
One use of embroidery appears In the
right hand gown of this picture. It was
In lavender nnd white on white net dot
ted with violet. Applications of lace,
especially In medallions, Insertions and
ribbons arc employed freely and with au
thority. Jacket bodices nre galore, and Louis
models nre numerous anions the moro
dressy ones. Hut the Louis fashions
have prevailed long enough to result In
many modifications so at times the clas
sification of the gnrment Is not easy. Ite
malnlug Ic the second picture Is a coat
whose source Is unmistnknblc. It was
black velvet embroidered In delicate
green nnd rose pink and trimmed with
cream lace. A plain skirt of black peau
de sole dotted with white accompnnied
It. as sketched. It can be said In favor
of many of these elaborate coats that
they can be worn as separate bodices, so
their costliness may not Involve down
right extravagance.
The gowns of middle-aged fashionables
do not Indicate much less consideration
of dress tinin do those of women a score
or more of years younger. There is lit
tle less of clnboratcucss, though richness
Is the aim, rather than n display of nov
elty, and there arc Inevltnblc restrictions
as to materials and garnitures. The
heavier or more subdued grades of silks,
satins and soft velvets arc chosen, and
black, gray, white and black and white
are used. Skirts often bnvo n front
panel of handsome lace, ecru or black,
the sides and black plain or finished with
a deep Spanish flounce, or with two or
three smaller flounces. Bodices linvo
yokes end handsome fronts to match,
and fichu effects In lnce, mull, black net
or chiffon arc common. Dlack mousse-
Hue and black lnce net Is a handsomo
combination Vhen made over whlto or
delicate green silk. Figured and striped
black grenadine Is much used, too.
Sleeves nre elaborate, but eccentricity U
avoided. Collars arc soft and dainty,
usually of delicate shades of velvet or
white and cream lnce. The first and
third models of to-day's third Illustration
nre two handsome gowns of this class.
Tho one was pearl gray, light-weight
broadcloth, heavy 'white Irish guipure,
black silk net and black velvet rosettes;
the other was black etamlne, white taf
feta stencilled and finished with black
cording for front, revers, collar, and
sleeve puffs, and white cording for the
skirt's flounces.
The wraps worn by fashionables well
along In years often are extremely rich.'
Fine examples of broadcloth, velvet and
silk appear In them, and black taffeta and
velvet are especially stylish. The coats
are made either to the ground or a little
above, have handsomo revers, collar and
ruffs embroidered or covered with rich
lace. Chosen for Illustration hero were
a three-qunrter black taffeta coat, with
cuffs nnd revers of white moire cmbrold-
ered In blacl' and cold braid, and a Ioiik
cloak of alternate bands of black peau
de sole and black silk net, white silk
showinif beneath the latter, white laci)
finishing the fronts. Cloth coats are
beautifully stencilled and appllqued with
soutache and with taffeta to match or a
shade darker. Tan, biscuit, gray and
black are indorsed. Taffeta cloaks hare
a handsome collar and revers of lace. For
traveling, plain black or linen colored
pongee coats are shown.
