Many a serious accident on tho water might be avoided If vessels were Qttcd with a, dcvlco for bringing them to a Btop as quickly as posslblo when the danger appears. Louis Lacoste of Mon treal, Que., has designed au apparatus for this special purpose, which Is Illus trated herewith, the plcturo showing the central part ot a steamer with the brake mechanism attached In operating position. Tho brnko proper consists of a hinged gate of considerable width, attached to tho sldo of tho ship to extend vertl- I X t 4 t HKTARDS FAUAOE THROUGH WATKK. rally downward from the water line. Normally this gate lies close ngulnst the sldo of the vessel and offers no resistance to the progress through the water, but when the proper signal Is given Irom the pilot house the engineer starts the mechanism which released the clamp securing the forward edge of the gate, the latter Immediately Uylug open, until It Is at right angles to the course of tho ship, where It Is sustain ed by the braces at the rear. The brakes are arranged lu pairs and two or more sets may- be applied to one ship. They offer no hludrauce to the movement of the ship through the wat er as long as they remain closed, but afford a .valuable addltldon to the re versed propeller In bringing the ship to a quick stop in times of danger. A 8LOW PROCE8S. Coollna of the Karth aa Hclatlnsr to the JtiKtli of the Day. Profess r Woodward, In the Popu lar Science Monthly, has lately given au .account of his researches on the progrfulve cooling of tho earth and Its relation to the length of the day. Does the length of the day vary' Was It formerly shorter than now? Will It, lu the future, be lengthened? The an swer depetids upon the mass of the earth, which varies, since meteoric dust perpetually full upon the tmrface and thus Increases the (ittautlty of matter; and on Its volume, which he comes smaller hs the mass Is progres sively cooled. I-uplure concluded from the data at his disposition that there bad been no sensible change lu the length of the day for 2,000 years. Woodward has rejwnted bis calcula tion with new data, and concludes (hat the duration of the day has not chang ed as much as half a second during the first 10.000.000 years after the be ginning of solidification of tne earth's material. When the cooling of the earth finally reaches Its term the change will be marked. Professor Woodward's result is that the ratio of the change of the day to its Initial length Is twn-thlrds of the product of the loss of temperature multiplied ly Its cubical contraction. Par example. If the prltijltlve temperature of the earth was U.000 (leg. C, and if Its cubi cal contraction was that of Iron, the day will be tlually reduced about 0 per ceat that Is t say, by about an hour 3H frfcrr3.3 L - I 1 k . and a htif. Tho lapse of time neces sary to bring thts about Is enormous. Three hundred thousand millions of years are required, according to Wood ward, for 05 per cent of tho total con traction to take place. Tho length of tho day will not bo sensibly affected, on tho other hand, after the expiration of 1,000,000 of millions of yenrs. Tho fall of meteoric dust tends to lucrenso tho mass of the earth, and thus to chnngu the length of the day, but tho effect duo to this cauio Is not nbovo ouo-two-hundred-thousnndth of tho ef fect of scculnr cooling. Twenty mil-' lions of small meteors, weighing on .the nverago one gramme each, fall on ,tho eurth dally, but In 1,000,000 of mil lions of years tho length of dny will not be Increased a quarter of n second on this account Taking everything together tho day will shorten, not lengthen, but the process, will go on with extremo Blowness. Afloat. Taking tho factory to tho raw ma terial Instead of bringing tho material to tho factory, Is an innovation Just put In operation on tho Mississippi Klvcr by a button factory, and It Is a plan that has many practical advan tages, 'if.s factory is n bont forty two foot long and twelve feet wide, with all of the neccssury machinery for the mnnufneturo of buttons, and provided with n three-horse power en gine for Its work. The principal ma terial used by this factory is mussel shells, which aro found at nearly all points along tho river, and one of the great expenses In conducting tho busi ness heretofore hna been the cost . of transporting the shells. Now tho fac tory has reversed the operation and will go to the mussels. When a bed of the shells Is found the boat will drop anchor and go to work. When the bed Is exhausted it wilt go on to n new lo cation, lu this fashion It will go from State to State, from' Minnesota to Louisiana, passing along with the sea sons. On the. boat the workmen have their home with all Its comforts, with freedom from land rout and the visits of tax collectors. Ills ICxjilanatlort. A group of men were sitting In the) smoking room when tho talk turned upon tho war lu South Africa. Several of tho men bad seen service, and, al though some of them wero strangers, conversation was brisk and entertain ing. "Well," began a soldierly looking fellow, "I've heeu In South Africa my self, and had a very Interesting time." "Kver get very close to the Hoers?" some one asked. "Katherl 1 onco took two of their officers." "Unnlded?" "Certainly. And the very uext dny I took eight men with their horses." "All wouuded, I expect?" remarked a listen er, with a suspicion of u sneer. "You didn't get hurt, of course?" "Just a scratch, that's nil! And the day ufter I took a lot of transport wagons, nnd followed that up by taking it Boer kraal und a big gun." "Mister," said tho dls ugreeoblo man of Ihe audience, "I have seen some of the finest specimens of unythlug you can call to mind, but frankly you are the only legitimate sue wtisor of Huron Munchausen that I've ever met!" "Oh, no. I'm not that," said the story-teller modestly with a good natured smile "I'm only a photo grapher!" KnlttirtK IirUlator Krowuril Down. Mr. Cut heart Wusou, the member for Orkney und Shetland, who employed his spare time lu knitting stockings In ihe smoking-room at the House or Commons, has recently abandoned his practice. Mr. Wuson used to explain to Inquirers that his eyesight was wry bad, and that, as he could not be al ways reading, he took up knitting us i pastime. The Innovation, though quite an Innocent one, annoyed a number of old Parliamentary hands, mid of lato Mr. Wnsnn's knitting needles have not been In evidence at Westminster. Lou. don Mall.
