l V THE mJSV, AGE, POttTIiAOT), OSKGON. TOPICS OF ) THE TIMES. A mnn never renlly 1kkIii8 to live un til he Ih (lend In love. Being n gcntlenmn Is the most dlUI colt thing In the world. Death haH turned out to be n Hue rncchorBC. Death wIiih In the end. It's a striking coincidence that tho things a hoy likes to throw at break easiest. A little luck nnd n fool's Ignorance have Hindu many a line reputation for bravery. Ood seldom looks Into tho house where there are no little linger murks on the walls. It seems that In China It Is not "tho mau behind tho gun," but tho woman behind the screen. The shrines of tho people nro tho birthplaces of the great poets. Not ono f them Is a palace. The vegetarians say a man may llvo a hundred years on vegetables and cold water. Hut Is It worth while? The redoubtable King of 81am really doesn't know how large his family Is. He catalogues only llrst editions. It must ho admitted as we go along that Minster Wit Is a mnn who Is thor oughly on to the curves of his Job. King I'M ward faces tho wrong way on the now Hrltlsh postago stamp. Wo feared that tho excitement would turn his head. Wo can readily bellovo that the na tion's capital, among other things, bar born typhoid and grip germs, but lock jawnever. When .Miss Husau H. Anthony says there are too many children born Into the world she has reference more par ticularly to hoys. Marconi Is passing through one or the stages necessary to undying fame as an Inventor. Tho Paris savants deny that b la an Inventor at all. An enormous Increase In Kuglaud's atlonal debt Is noted, Indicating that John Hull Is not getting anything In Bouth Africa at reduced rates. When thcro Is a lull of a week be tween battles on tho Isthmus ono never knows whether It Is a new revolution started or ono of the old ones brought back to life. i An Eastern professor says tho peoople f this country are working themselves to death. Has ho over looked around tbo olllce when a baud was marching down tho street? Chicago contractors aro going to clo tHto her trains that run through tho Btflok Yards for JfL'.OOO.OOO. Western trains are frequently held up for a twentieth part of that sum. Love used to laugh at locksmiths, but by considering Now York's fashionable weddings wo may learn that the little goil has como to have great respect for the combination of tho safe, A sufferer complains that tho mince pie of commerce contains prunes which aro thus palmed off on the public as nil Ins. "The Mystery of the Mlueo" grows deeper with the passage of the aims. President Oilman of the Carnegie In stitute speaks the solemn truth when hu observes that the giving of degrees lii this country Is overdone and that tho oxtcnt of It Is ridiculous. It Is rea sonably safe to anticipate that the In stitution over which hu presides will not make tho practice more so. If It were not for tho American wom en, especially the college women or those who have been educated In other ways, American llfo nt tho threshold of tho busy twentieth century with "Trade" as Its omnipresent ami allur ing motto In this strenuous nation would bo dull, monotonous, sordid and without uplifting tendencies. Telephone: Use your head to save your legs," one lawyer recently advised another. "Oh," was thu reply, "I use my legs to save my head. If I walk ttvo blocks and get tho papers Into my wn hands, 1 shall not be worrying tho next three hours lest they aro not de livered In time, or are wrong when they are delivered. Incidentally, I shall walk off a headache, and derive all the beuetlts of an expensive gymnasium without going there." It will take time, but the nations, on after another, will round out the defini tion of their respective attitudes to ward tho United States In the Spanish war, and according to present Indica tions, when the testimony Is all In, It will signify that wo had more friends among them than wo thought. At the outset same of them had queer ways of showing It, but wo have forgotten all that and uro now glad to see them rallying u round us In such a generous manner. During tho past tweuty-tlve years tho Aro loss In the United States which has ben made good by tho Insurance com Mantes has exceeded ?'J,SOO,000. There iiave been many years when tho com panics generally hnvo made money, but for a number of years their louses have been enormous, beginning with 1808, tho losses for the country have been each year: For 1808, $110,050,600; for 18JH), $130,773,200; for 1000, $103. 30'J,S50, and for 1001, about $105,000. 000. There must be some remedy for this. The public Is not prepared for nn Increase of rates to cover propor tionate losses In tho future. There Is no assuranco that losses will be lest and nobody adequately explains why they should have so enormously In creased within a few years. A professor In a Western university lately made n list of the best-hated words In tho English languago by as certaining the dislikes of a large num ber of correspondents. It seems that tho most unpopular word Is "victuals." Of course It Is merely a matter of taste. That Is to say, victuals do not taBte so good as food. Hawthorne mny have felt the antipathy to tho word when ho wrote that no sort of "victuals" seemed to come nmlss to his pig. On the other hand, Tennyson sings of a falr-halred youth who In his hand j "hnre victual for tho mowers." Per haps the singular Is less obnoxious than the plural, Just as the verb, to victual, seems to bo In better repute than the noun. Meanwhile we can en Joy the thing without mentioning Its bud name. A book recently Issued by It. T. Crane of Chicago revives the old, old contro versy concerning tho vnlue of a college or academy education to a young man who has to earn his own living and who expects to pursue an Industrial or commercial vocation. Mr. Crane's book has provoked u spirited rejoinder from tho pen of another Chlcagoau, A. C. Hartlett. In gathering tho data for his hook Mr. Crano sent Inquiries to hundreds of business men, college and university presidents and college grad uates. It uppears that tho testimony as a rule was In favor of n college edu cation, but this evidence was largely discredited by Mr. Crane, who drew deductions that were unfavorable to college training as a preparation for business. Ho noted tho fact that many of tho business men were Inclined to place a high value on tho mental disci pline obtained In college llfo and ob served that with ono or two exceptions none of the gentlemen who responded to his Inquiries make n point of em ploying college graduates In his busi ness. The college men who replied to Mr. Crane's questions concerning tho value of the higher training to them In business seemed In his opinion to be prompted by u spirit of loyalty to their alma mater to say a good word for col lege education, while ho Infers that tho large number who refrained from answering had been unsuccessful In business nnd feared that an acknowl edgment of this fact would bo used to tho disadvantage of colleges. Itegard less of the valtio of such data as that collated by Mr. Crane Jt would seem that both he and his critic were guilty of fundamental error regarding tho purpose of tho higher education. They seem to have entirely missed tho point that knowledge Is valuable because It Is knowledge and that Its value does not necessarily consist In the ability of Its possessor to convert It Into tho "coin of tho realm." As Mr. Hartlett says, there Is more happiness In know ing things than In having things, Kuowledgo and the higher education are worth acquiring for their own sake. If every college graduate In tho laud for a hundred years died without ac cumulating property, or even died poor In this world's goods, It would not con stitute an argument against college education. As a matter of fact, how ever, any training that disciplines, broadens and enriches tho mind, as university or college training does, must supply a better equipment for grappling readily and successfully with the problem of existence, whether In tho learned professions or In tho do ixirtiuent of commercial endeavor. It Is not the primary function of u college to show a man how to mnke money. Those llurinlos-i Soldiers. Iteccntly a soldier was discussing politics In a tobacconist's shop with two red-hot nunrehlsts. "Tell us," they asked him, "If one day the down-trodden worklngmen were to revolt, would you bo ono to tiro on them?" "1? Never!" "Hmvo! You nro a true eomrndel Hero, master, bring us some of your best cigars; wo must make our gallant sympathiser n present." Tho box was brought, and at their request tho Tommy tilled his pockets with choice Havanns. Then one of tho anarchists put an other question to tho bravo soldier, tho friend of the people: "How many men, bravo fellows llko yourself, etui wo count on In tho bar racks?" ho asked. "All tho band-they will nil act ns myself. I play on the big drum, you know," ho casually remarked, and, blowing a cloud of smoke Into the air, he Avalked out. Ixmdon Answers.
