CO YEARS' UpHlJIEXPERIENCE LEGENDS OF TfiEES. SUPER8TITION8 FROM ANCIENT DAYS CONCERNING THEM. Tho Oak, Holly, Mistletoe, Poplar, Mulberry, FIki Hay and Hone Are VeRctalile Growth that Are Hlch In AsHoclutloiiH Uld'Tlme Myths. Chrlstnias Is tho only holiday Identi fied with certain vegetable growths the holly, Iho mistletoe, und the Christ inas tree. The veneration in which these ure held goes buck to n remote an tl(tilty. There are, however, sotno strange mid curious legends nttachlng toother products of the vegetable king dom. The onk tree Is rich In associations, having been held sacred alike by the Hebrews, the Greeks und the Romans. ! 'pile oak under which It Is believed Abraham stood when the angels came announcing the birth of Isaac was long an object of veneration, and was puld to be still In existence In tho time of Constantino. All the oaks In the grovo of Dodoua, In Kplrtis, wero saitl to lie gifted with prophecy. Koine of tho trees were cut down and hewn Into timber to build the ship Argo, One of the myths states that .Itiplter derived his power from the oak, and he taught men to live upon fi.trine tin tllnv (nlrrtlt lirinnltllt utl-ntlt? and wise, and to swear by the oak was ! a most solemn and binding form. When returning from the infernal re gions It Is related that Hercules wore a wreath composed of poplar leaves. Ills brow being damp with porsplratlon, tho Inner side of the leaves, coming In con tact with It, turned white, and the out crstirfacc of the loaves turned almost black from smoke. From this, It is said, came the silver-leafed poplar. From the Arabians comes it story an to the origin of the yellow, for which there appears to be some foundation In the scriptures. David, after Ills mar riage with Kathshi'ba, was one day playing on his harp, when two angles appeared and accused him of his great sin. For forty days and nights David shed tears of repentance. "From his tears (lowed two streams, which .'tin from tho chamber into the garden, and from them sprang two trees, one of which was the willow which Incessant ly weeps ami mourns and tho other tho frankincense tree, which sheds big tears, each in remembrance of his re pentance." Tho ancients had a custom of making presents of dried tigs and bay leaves on tho llrst of tho year, for tho bay tree was considered good for tho health. There ape always to be found somo bay loaves In the choicest packages of tigs which come from abroad. It was near u white mulberry tree that the lovers Pyramus and Thlsbe met their tragic death; and the poor mulberry tree, being, It Is said, sprinkl ed with their blood, forever after boro red fruit. The holly is said to have come by Its red berries In a similar way. Somo of thegods.lt Is said, wero diverting them helves one day by shooting at Hinder, thu god of mirth, after placing him against the holly. I.okl, tho god of envy, shot nt him with an arow tipped with mistletoe. A few drops of his blood spurted over tho holly, con sequently thu berries are red, and the grief of the mistletoe was so Intenso that ever slnco her berries havo bccti like teardrops. Some traditions relate that the origin al color of the rose was white, says tho New York Times, but that ono day when the gods were feasting Cupid with his wing upset a bowl of nectar, which fell In a shower upon tho earth, dyeing all tho roses red. Another story tells that the goddess of (lowers, upon Hutting the dead body of her favorite nymph, Implored tho gods to assist in changing her Into u tlower which should be the tnieeii of (lowers. "in respnoso to nor reiuet, says this legend, "Uacclius bathed tho tlower In nectar, Aurora caused her dows to fall thick upon It, refreshing Its roots, while Apollo's beams shone with luvlg orating warmth. Flora crowned Its stem with a diadem of bloom unsur passed for beauty, and Yertuuinus unolnted It with perfumes from tho Vale of Tempo." 8UN-BATH ON THE SIDEWALK. Au Invalid I.curim Hoittetliluit About Human CurIoi.lt-. An Invalid who hud been In tho coun try for her health, and was ordered to continue tho "fresh-air cure," oven after alio hud returned to tho city, de scribes In tho Atlantic Monthly some of the amusing experiences which came to her through tho unrepressed curios ity of tho public. She took her place ou the sidewalk, In the euu, with ateiim er-chulr and rugs, expecting to "live and let live." Hut she wus destlued to learn something nbout humau na ture before the day ended. I mil lu the very uet of seating my elf, she says, when the attack begins. Two exclteddooklng women rush up to me. une or tiiem negius with u volley oi questions; "What Is the matter with her?" (I am supposed to be tumble to speak for myself, und my friend Is addressed.) "What alls her J Mi, what left her like this? la It rheumatism? if fs rheumatism, I can tell you what to do. You take aomo vinegar and some salt, common salt, and you put in It aomo lyo. Just common lye, and you apply it. I have cured a great many people of rheumatism with this. There Is n man who is ti conductor on the railroad 1 cured him; and ho says If lie ever has n twinge ngaln, he will get In a tub of this." Smiles and nods and the strangers havo gone; 1 begin to realize what I am doing. Nurse-maids who have children out for an airing discuss me In tho soothing tones supposed to be adapted to Infant cars, and in the midst of my reading I hear murmurs: "Yes, yes, a lady out taking tho sun. Nice sun for the lady. Will do the lady good." Homeless dogs and friendless 'chil dren shelter themselves about my chair to rest. I am of great uso to organ grinders, acting as tho nucleus of a quickly gathering crowd. I servo as an Intelligence olllcc, and receive constant Inquiries as to whero pcoplo live, whethor I know any ono who would like to hlro a servant, and whether I know of sorvnutB who wish to hire. I also had an offer of work. A negro man addressed me: "Yiili nuts' scuso me, lady, full spcaklu' tub yuh. I axes yuh pnrdon, but 1 been a-looklu' full somebody lak yuh. I wan' tub ax whether yob would lak tub teach some body o' cose tub bo paid somethln' ev'vy week. It's my wife. Sho can't read, and I want huh to lun." Binall boys seem not to accept tho sit uation, perhnps becuuso they are tho frankest of mortals. I hear them across the street, Baying: "Como on, let's go ovor and look nt her." Ono day I was cxatnlncd.by two, and heard surprised voices: "Is It a lady?" A long pause, and then, with still great surprise, "Ye-csl" At another time I had my arms under my cope, and I heard from a pair of urchins, In awestruck tones, "She ain't got no bands!" Ono day two llttlo fellows sat down on tho steps by me, and ono ventured to speak: "Lady, what's the matter with ycr? Can't ye wulk? Got both yer feet cut off?" This tlmo I questioned them In return, and upon my asking why they were not In school, one glibly replied: "I have to work. Got to help my mother." "Do you work?" "Yes'in." he said, proudly, and hand ed me a pnpor on which was written, "Please help my mother to pay her rent. God will help you. God bless you!" My remarks concerning thin kind of work quickly ended tho curiosity nbout myself, S. R. Crockett writes to his publish. era concerning his lntcfit novel, "The Firebrand": "For the purposes of "Tho Firebrand" I lived romantically among tho ox-brlgandf), actual smugglers and other Quo follows In the utmost Pyre nees and Sierras of Moncayo." The nunio of the heroine of Anne Scarlett, Mary Imluy Taylor's latest novel, was a pure Invention of tho author. Yet, strnngo to say, Miss Tay lor luiH received a letter from an actual Anno Scarlctto living In Newark, N. J who naturally expresses a lively inter est In tho origin of tho title. A book will soon bo published by John Lauo called "Juno Austen: Her Homes and Her Friends," by Constance Hill. It will give a plcturo of Jnno Austen's dally II fo In her different homes, nnd thus make us rcallzo tho Inllucnces thnt affected her as a writer for wo take It for grunted thnt many readers are Interested In Jane Austen. Timely advice Is given In nu exchango as to buying so-called Juvenllo books. Hecauso a book Is labeled "Juvenllo" It does not follow that Is a proper book for children. Theso books should ho examined, unless well known, for very often they contain matter that Is not really Intended for young rentiers. Buy ers of such books Hhould take nothing for granted from the titles of books In tended for suns nnd daughters. Every ono hears of tho "list of best soiling books," but who ever henrd of a list of hooka that havo never left tho shelves! Tho Public Library of Lin coln, England, gives the names of such books. The, number is not large, only 115 out of the 10,raS volumes In the li brary can boast that tho dust on them lias never been disturbed. Not a single novel, however stupid, can clnlm this unenvluhlo distinction. Works of tho ology and history lend all tho rest lu this sleep of the unread. Is there anything new under the sun? Attention being called to the fact In oue of Maurice Hewlett's "New Canter bury Titles," that tho sex of a girl dis guised us a boy Is discovered by throw ing an apple In her lap; the Academy aska Mr. Hewlett If ho is awure that the same Incident Is used In "Huckle berry Finn." then the New York Times comes and says that Charles Reado used it In "Cloister and the Hearth." and Anally some one elso suggests that the incident was used, long before Charles Readc's time but this Is back far enough for us. Old KollglouB Hooks. The dispersal of the religious orders In Paris bus been followed by the ap pearance of n large number of religious books in tho boxes of the dealers on tho Qual I'Orsny. Here they Jostlo with Voltaire, under the shadow of his statue, nnd with ditties of the "cafe concert." These books principally come from the Carmelites' library. In the Ruo do Vuuglard, which was dispers ed two months ago, when tho ordet turned Its back ttpou France at the bid ding of an Inhospitable law.
