WONDERFUL TIDE CALCULATOR.
Undo Sam hns a wonderful clock at
WanhlnRlon, D, 0., which represents the
thought and effort of nineteen of the bout
years of thp life of William Fen-ell, to
whom mariners owe as much, probably,
b to any other man.
Tho clock Is a tldo-prcdlctlns machine.
Day after day a woman keeps turning a
little handle, causing the hands on tho
center dial and the smaller ones at each
side to revolve until they reao'i certain
figures which indicate the time nil height
of the tide at all principal no-iports on
the North American coast. In like man
ner, the time of low tides Is ascertained.
At some seaports the tides rise higher
and fall lower than the average, and the
pressing of a handle makes the neces
sary connections for such places.
To attempt to describe tho Intricate
arrangement of this wonderful raachlno
would be futile. Suffice It to say that In
a day the woman operator can computo
the tides for a month, and she will not
havo to add or subtract a number simply
take readings as indicated hy the posi
tions of the hands on the dial. So accu
rate Is this machine that the measure
ments of the heights of tho tides as they
occur arc generally within an Inch of tho
figures announced, sometimes years In
advaucc, while there Is usually less than
fifteen minutes difference between tho
forecast and actual times of occurrence
of high and low tides.
To verify the work of this calculator, a
machine dalled a tide gaugo is used,
which requires no human assistance ex
cept to wind the clockwork. A pencil
presses upon a roll of paper that covers
a cylinder. The pencil is fastened to a
wire, whoso other end Is fixed to a float
on tho water. As the water rises and
falls, the wire tightens and slackens.

In tho very homo of the storm king.
Medicine lint Is a town of 1,000, Is
very primitive nnd unfashionable, nnd
Is situated In a deep depression with
bluffs surrounding It on all Bides. It
hns been nptly likened to a small lump
of butter In a huge butter bowl. The
Canadian Pacific Itallroad enters tho
town through a narrow ravine, strikes
straight across tho sunken valley and,
gradually climbing along tbo side of the
western bluff, comes out once more up
on tho prairie. While Medicine Hat Is
more widely known becnuso of Its con
nection with our weather reports than
for any other reason, It Is of consid
erable Importance ns a railroad and
trade center for a largo section of tho
surrounding country. It Is a divisional
point on tho Canadian Pacific and Is
tho Junction point for n lino Htrctchlng
nway Into tho Kootenny district at tho
southwest. It Is also the head of nav
igation on the Saskatchewan river and
Is a commercial center for a very large
area of ranching country.
Tho weather station Is In charge of n
typical Westerner, Walter Crossklll by
name, Just such a character as tho art
ist love to picture. While voyaging
about the world on a schooner tie stud
led astronomy as a pastlmo; has pros
pected through the entlro length and
breadth of the mountains of British
Columbia; has fought Indians and half
breeds; has been n rancher and trader,
and Is now not only weather observer
but town magistrate. Ho Is also a ear-
penter and he builds houses when the
weather Is such that ho can leavo It
without attention. Crossklll Is 70 years
of age, but looks not more than 50. Ho
Is not as polished and well dressed as
his fellow scientists of the city, but
Muds Jeans, collarless shirt and heavy
boots a very satisfactory costume.
Crossklll twice each day sends re
ports to Chicago. Wnshlngtrn, Minne
apolis and to Canadian points. His re
liability has been tested on many oc
casions. Crossk Ill's ottlco Is a small
atory and a half building, well back
from the street. And uot only la It his
office, but carpenter shop nud living
rooms, as well as tho town court
house.
Weather conditions at MoJIcIno Hat
aro peculiar and full of surprises, Oue
naturally expects to tind the thermom
eter showing poluts below sero more
than anythlug else during the winter
months, ami also to llnd lower temper
aturo registered than at aity other place
on tho American continent. Such Is
not tho case, however, though It gets
pretty cold In Medicine Hat at the
right time of year. In the Northern
States a temperature of 35 degrees be
tow aero Is often recorded and It has In
a number of instances been lower thau

and the pencil draws curved lines upon
the paper, exactly reproducing, on n
small scale, the fluctuations in aititudo of
the surface of tho water.
Connected with the tide gauge one may
often cee what Is called the tide Indi
cator. This is another clock, so to speak,
but the dial records tho height of the
tide instead of minutes nnd hours. Each
figure represents one foot, and each bar
between the figures is six Incites. These
indicators are Indoor and outdoor. The
latter hare hands 10 to 15 feet long, trav
eling over a half circle possibly 20 feet
from side to side, with figures which tho
pilot of a vessel can see half a mile away.
Indicators arc Intended for use in shallow
channels, and nro also found In shipping
offices and marltlmo exchanges.
that At Mcdlclno Hat tho lowest
point touched was 80 degrees, during
the past six years. In summer It gets
fearfully hot nt times. In spite of Its
northern location. Ono hundred de
grees above zero Is not unusual In Juno
and July, which nro tho hottest
months. During the year 1000 there
wcro but three months .which showed
a temperature bolow zero Janunry,
I"'cbrunry and Mnrch. December show
ed tho lowest point to havo been 23
degrees above zero.
Tho average snowfall at Medicine
lint Is ten Inches for the year. Snow
seldom lies on tho ground longer thnn
a day or two and, strange ns It may
seem of such a northern locality,
sleighs arc practically unknown. Such
rapid changes of temperature ns aro
experienced nowhere clso In America
are responsible for this.
It Is certainly a queer country n
country of strange contradictions nnd
odd conditions. To think that tho
"home of the cold wavo" Is more often
warm than cold seems queer enough,
but It remains a fact nevertheless.

Tlio DntiRors of Palmistry .
If the study of palmistry, which Is
very general In this country at the
present time, were to bo pursued only
by persous of Intelligence nnd Judg

be good or at least harmless, but as a
matter of fact a large proportion of
these students (and shall we say teach
ers, also?) are of a literal turn of mind.
This line, say they, means that the In
dividual will die by drowning, or by
tire, or bo widowed early In life, or In
herit a fortune. Fancy the Influence
upon literal and superstitious minds,
