A doctor ciin H!rsundo n woman to linvu almost anything nmiiutntod ex copt her tongue. If laziness Is t cully a disease, what n lot of sick people there must bo who don't try to be cured. The New York Hun devotes a pngo to A communication "How to Stop Huor liiK." Keep awiikel HIiikIo statehood sounds llko a mitt nomer for the projose wedding of Oklahoma and the Indian Territory. Almost every day some man suddenly discovers that his wife's affections aro worth anywhere from $25,000 to $1G0, 000. Newspaper postago has been abol ished In l'eru. It Is probable that all the l'eru newspapers support the ad ministration. Said an Irish physician of a patient: "If he lives till morning ho may pull through; but If he doesn't there Is no hope for him." It Is said that a widow noted for her garrulity hangs the late lamented's tint on the back of a chair and talks at It for ten hour at a stretch. Klnnnclers say that gold Is becoming too plentiful In this country. There aro quite a number of people, however, who have not yet hollered "Muff." Has the meanest man been found In that New York sport who nsked to be Im'ked tip becauxe he wild he was so mean ho was afraid of killing himself? The up-to-date prima donna appreci ates that there Is more than one way to acquire free publicity. Kiiiinii Ne vada has como to the defense of rag time. It Is said that a cork leg Is so called because It Is never made of cork. The statesmanship of some of our public men might bo accounted for In tho name way. Jay ClouId'H youngest boy has mar ried a girl who has an Income of about $100,000 a year. It Is supposed, how ever, that ho had other reasons for wanting her. When two boys start out In life, ouo with, a copy of "Winning Ills Way" in his pocket and the other with a piece of natural elementary hustle In his head, the latter usually conies In llrst at the post. There Is this drawback to an X-niy diagnosis from tho patient's point of view: Tho doctor at the same time can make an Investigation of the subject's pockclhook and teo how much he can charge. An advocate of the now housekeeping for new women recommends that as much housework be done away from home as possible. The housework stunt that we should like to see done away from home Is the sweeping. DesJardlneH, n Frenchman who won n medal of honor by his heroic rescues nt tho charity bazaar tiro in l'arls In 1NH7, when so many lives were lost, was found on tho streets of that city In an almost starved condition last week. He still clung to the medal of honor which ho hail In his pocket, but his clothes wore In tatters and hu was nslmmed to wear It. Heroism does not seem to amount to much In tho battle for bread. At Allcutown, l'a n force of painters attempted to paint the side of a house adjoining the prop erty of a widow named Qulggs, when Mrs, Qulggti ami her on and daughter attacked them with clubs, hammers ami hatchets. The imlnters were com. pel led to retreat after UMug considera bly cut ami bruised, Tho tight was canned by an old dispute over the prop erty line, Mrs. Qulggs claiming that ho owns tho air on her sldo of the fence, where the painters were working, In the trouble bho ued the nlr nearly all up, talking, While wo sometime shudder at the prospect of auarchy In tula couutry we hare small cause for fear by the side of the people of Italy and Austria. It Is learned from a Home dispatch that no mention was made of the assassina tion of President McKlnley at the re opening of the Italian parliament be cause the socialist deputies threatened to defend the assassin and tho govern ment feared a scene. When tho Aus trian parliament met the same state ment was mado respecting the silence on that occasion. In Austria and Italy, It would seem, what In known In this country as socialism Is In those coun tries anarchy. Socialism In this coun try Is far removed from anarchy. The socialists of America seek more gov ernment while the anarchists are op posed to all government. What must be the condition of Italy and of Aus tria when a largo number of members of parliament openly sympathize with and defend tho murder of t govern ment servant! In attempting to concil iate these rabid government haters Italy and Austria havo revealed their dangerous foes. Wo can tako care of anarchy In this country If wo can keep out Kuropean anarchists. Anarchy cannot thrive In the utmonphcro of a republic. Hut If tho human wolves continue to breed abroad and cannot bo kept from our shores our security Is periled constantly. That "tho world do move" In medlcnl circles Is Indicated by an address re cently made by Dr. George II. Fowler, tho retiring President of the Now York County Medical Society, a practi tioner of tho allopathic, or "regular" school, as It calls Itself. Dr. Fowler on this occasion said that the code now permits consultation with any legally qualltlcd medical practitioner, and that tho high standards of medical educa tion In New York to-day aro Uie results of this. Ho said further: "Wo have se cured tho cooperation of the societies of the regulars, the eclectics, and the homeopaths. Wc do not respect our selves and are not respected when wo disagree among ourselves. I think the day Is near when there will bo a gen eral handshaking and agreement, and I hope the day Is coming when the whole medical profession will be one." The society which Dr. Fowlor address ed npplaudcd him warmly, and com mittees were appointed to secure the union of the regular and homeopathic county societies, All this Is most en couraging. The "medical hatred" has been In years past wellulgh as bitter as the "theological hatred." Tho war ring medical scliools have fought each other as llercely as the religious sects lined to do. Hut as we havo come Into the new century there has been a soft ening down of tho asperities, and there Is now a disposition to make conces sions, and not any longer claim tho whole truth. This liberalizing process In the medical profession Is particular ly gratifying. For somo time past tho adherents of ouo school havo not hesi tated to declare that they havo taken what thoy thought was effective from the materia medlcii of the other, and more than once the old-tlmo unyielding opponents have met on middle ground between the Infinitesimal attenuation and the full-grown bolus. This, as we havo said, Is hopeful. No ouo school Is big enough to contain tho whole truth. It Is wise, then, to utilize what Is good In -nil and to combine for that purpose. When the day conies that "tho whole medical profession will Iki one," as Dr. Fowler says, perhaps the mor tality lists will not bo so large. A yulok-Wltteil I )oo tor. A certain Trench mirgeon, of whom the Young Itidles' Journal tells, had so much more thought for his patient than for his own safety on ouo occasion, that he resorted to an expedient which, al though etllcacloiiH, might havo remitted In his own death. He hail been commissioned to bleed the Grand Kelgulor, and either through timidity or nervousness, had met with an awkward accident. Tho point of tho lancet broke olT In the vein, ami tho blood would not How, That point must bo got out somehow. Without stopping to consider the con sequences to lilmself, tho surgeon gave his highness it violent slap In the face. This produced the desired effect, for surprise ami Indignation on tho part of his august patient put tho blood Into violent circulation. The vein bled free ly and the lancet point came out. The bystanders were about to lay hands on the surgeon when he Haiti, "Klrst let me llulsh the operation and bandage the wound." This done, ho threw himself at the feet of the Htiltun and explained his action. The sultan not only pardoned him, bin gave him a handsome reward for keep ing his wits about him In it critical mo ment. Our Coul-1'roiliuiliiK liiings.
