ADDISON KIDD'S CONFESSION.
Negro IlcBpotiBlblu for Colllo Train
Wreck Confessed to Follaw-Prlrf-oner
nml Subsequently to Detective
nt Muzzle of Gun.
If the stories told by n prlsonor In
the county Jail, named H. V. Shaw, ami
tho Negro Addison Kldd nro true, De
tective Joe Holloy was not tho first
to whom Kldd confessed that ho was
the man who put tho nut on tho track
that caused the train wreck in which
Maurice Cavlnaugh lost his life. Tho
Chronicle man Interviewed both of
these men separately yesterday In tho
sheriff's oMm i.nrt heard their story
nf tho clrcimot'incoH connected with
the eonfccslon. In no matorlnl point
did tho two "torlcs dlffor. Hhnw In
committed for attempting to pass a
worthies'! check. Ho Is a young man
of more than ordinary Itnolllgence and
education. Ho was first lutervlowod
and In nnswor to tho question, "Did
the Nero confess to you that ho put
tho nut on the track?" Shaw said:
"Ho did. Ho old mo so In my cell last
Friday nlgnt."
"Why didn't you toll hoiiio of tho of
llcers noxt morning?" wnn asked.
"I hesitated becauso the sheriff had
warned mo not to talk with tho men
nrrosted on account of tho train wreck,
concerning tho chnrgos against them;
but I had determined to tell as soon ns
I got a chanco. Thin chance didn't
como until tho Negro had ropoatcd tho
confoBslon to tho detectives. I surely
would havo told as noon as I got an op
portunity for I wasn't going to let live
Innocent men suffer for a crlmo that
nnothor mnn wns guilty of."
"How did tho Negro como to confoss
to you?" wiih naked.
"I had been reading aloud," an
swered Shaw, "about tho diamond rob
liery In Portland, and about tho con
fesslon of ono of tho thieves, when
Kldd nervously remarked: 'Thoro's
whore nil colored men are weak.' Tho
nervous condition of tho mnn, more
than th6 remark Itsolf, struck mo.
Subsequently, over a gnmo of cards,
Kldd asked mo If I thought tho Jailor
would allow hi in to sleep In my cell
that night. I said: 'Certainly; I will
-ask him.' Wo got permission and
after wo bad been locked In for tho
night I began to read a mngnzlno
jtloud, when tho Negro touched mo on
the leg and sntd 'Head no more. I've
got something to toll you.' 'What Is
:lt?' I asked as I closed tho magazine.
"Those flvo men nro not guilty of that
Irain wreck,' answered tho Negro. 'I
did It myself.' 'You surely don't menu
that,' snld I. 'Yes, sir,' said tho Negro,
'I do.' 'Why did you do It?' I asked.
'I didn't know it would wreck the
train; I suppose I must have been
crazy,' answered tho Negro, as ho
twitched and trembled as If ho would
faint. 'Had you been drinking?' I
asked. 'Somenot much.' 'Hud you
any grievance against tho company?'
'Couldn't say I had any worth speak
lug of,' was the nimwor. Tho Negro
then went on to toll how ho first be
came afraid when lie was taken up to
tho wreck, and Captain Kevins picked
up a nut off the track that was all
covered with grease and said: 'Here
Is tho thing that did tho devilment.'
'I recognized tho nut,' said the Negro,
'because I had got my hand greasy
with It.' I asked him whero he got
tho nut, and ho said: 'I carried It
quite a llttlo ways. It enmo oft a box
car.' Ho said ho bad four nuts all
told, nnd that ho placed them on the
track ten or twelve feet apart. 'Next
morning tho Negro naked for the sher
iff nnd after a fow minutes' talk with
him ho naked mo what I thought they
would do with him If they found out
whnt ho hail done. I told him thnt pos
sibly thoy might hang him, and may
be he would got off with two or three
years In the penitentiary. During tho
morning I pretended to tell his fortuno
and told him ho was going to havo
lots of trouhlo over a woman or some
thing. He answered nervously: 'I be
lieve Dint's right.' Soon after, Detec-
tlvo Kelly camo to tho cell and took
the Negro nwny."
After Shaw had been taken back to
the Jail tho Negro was brought Into
tho sheriff's olllco nnd naked to ho
seated. Ho was told that his version
of the crlmo and tho confession wns
wanted for publication, and waB asked
to state tho exact truth and nothing
olsc. H1h ntiBwcrs to tho questions
put to him wore ns follows:
"I first told Mr. Shaw whllo wo oc
cupied tho Bamo cell Friday night that
I put tho nut on tho track. I made
tho.coufess'lon because I didn't want
other men to ho punished when I know
thoy woro not guilty. I put four nuts,
nil told, on tho track, three or four
feet apart. I wasn't In my right
senses. I hnd been drinking. I got n
pint of liquor nt Umatilla nnd two
pints more nt Arlington. I drank It
nil before I put tho nuts on tho track
and wns hurrying to Tho Dalles to buy
more. I hnd no money, hut I expected
to got Bomo when I would ronch horo.
After the wreck took placo I was com
ing to town when I was overtnken by
nn cnglno nnd cnbooso. The cnglno
stopped when It overtook me nnd a
goutlemnn stuck his head out of tho
cabooso and politely snld: 'Stop up,
old mnn, nnd havo a ride' When wo
got to tho depot Mr. Wood stopped up
to me nnd told mo I was undor arrest.
Mr. Allsky, who wns with him, put n
pair of nippers on me nnd thoy
brought mo horo nnd locked mo In a
private cell. These men talked to mo
before Friday and churged mo with
having put tho nuts on tho track. Fri
day night beforo I was locked up I
asked for thorn, but thoy didn't como.
I wanted to confess to them. I nsked
Mr. Shnw to Bleep In my cell Frldny
night, becnuso I wanted to' confess to
him. Ho was the first mnn I told that
I put tho nuts on tho track. Noxt
morning I nsked to soo Captain Novlns
becnuso I wanted to find out whnt tho
inon thnt woro tnken to Portland had
sworn against mo. I wanted to con
fess to tho captain. Aftor n whllo Mr.
Itolley camo and took mo In n bnck
room. Ho asked mo some questions
nbout tho wreck nnd then snld;
'You're tho coon that done It; you'd
bettor confess.' As ho snld this ho
Jumped from his chair, put his hand
to his hip pocket, drow out a pistol
nnd, pointing it nt mo, snld: 'If you
don't confess I'll blow your mug off.
If you don't confess I'll take you to
Portland nnd put you In tho tank.' I
don't know whnt he mount by tho tnnk.
I told him I hnd confessed to Shnw In
tho Jail. Ho then took me nut on tho
street and, nftor wnndorlng around
for n whllo ho took mo to tho prosecut
ing Attorney's otllce, whoro I repented
the confession thnt I hnd mndo to
Shaw. When nbout hnlf n block from
tho nttorney'a olllco I told Mr. Helloy
thnt I had put tho nuts on tho track.
In the courtroom nnd again on tho
street Mr. Itolley told mo that If I
would swear that tho boy put tho nut
on tho track ho would divide tho re
ward of $1000 with mo nnd glvo mo
half."
Tho Dalles Chronicle tolls these
stories ns they woro told to it. It has
only to say that tho Negro Impresses

moral sensibility thau an African gorilla.
WASCO'S POPULAIt SHERIFF.
Hon. Itobort Kejly, 6t Wasco coun
ty, is probably tho best known and
moat popular slieriir in the state of
Oregon. For eight years ho has dis
charged tho duties of thoshrcivnlty of
that county so faithfully, efficiently
and economically as to givo him
practically a life-lease on tho position
if ho desires to retain it. Although
n Republican of tho purest typo, his
personal and political friends include
litem bcrs of all the parties. So posi
tively is this tho cubo that latterly
thcro is very little politics in his cam
paign for rc-elcotion. Everybody
knows honest Hob Kelly nnd oven
thoso in tho remotest corner of Wasco
county know what kind of a shcritF
ho makes.
ShcrilV Kelly is a man of extraor
dinary firmness, courage and loyalty
to duty. Coupled with those estima
ble qualities aro conservativeness and
impartial and carefully formed judg
ment in all things in which tho pub
lic is interested. Ho is a man of
strong personality, unquestioned in
tegrity and great geniality.
Knowledge of Slieriir Kelly's estini
able record, both as a public ollicinl
and a private citizen, is not confined
to Wasco county, by any means. Ho
is prominent in the councils of tho
party throughout tho stato and is
known officially in almost every dis
trict of Oregon.
Those who havo participated in tho
discussion of tho possiblo successor of
United. States Marshal Housor have
not only heard ot ShurilV Kelly as the
logical candidate for that position,
but thoy havo learned that his lcj;ion
of friends and political admirers pro
pose to urge that the Republican or
ganization of the stato insist on his
appointment. Ho is peculiarly fitted
for tho discharge of tho duties of that
office and would niako an ideal U. S.
Marshal
ductlve of wealth. Individuals and
private corporations havo tried tho
experiment nnd hnvo found It profit
able. Is there any reason why tho
government, cnrrylng on operations on
a much larger scalo than would bo
possible to any Individual, should not
find It equally profitable?
Tho details of the methods by which
tho government could go nbout the
work nro matters which need not bo
dlsciiBscd hero. Tho point Ib that,
both directly nnd Indirectly, tho na
tion would profit by addition to Its
productive territory; so, why should
not tho nations take part In making
tho Improvements which will result
In such addition?

AS TIME MOVES ON.
By tho approach of tho cud ot tho
first year of tho new century wo nro
reminded of tho changes that havo
como as products of a year of amazing
activities in commerce1, in politics

ments throughout tho civilized world.
Wars in progress at tho beginning of
the century continue to devastate por
tions of the struggling world and to
sorrow great communities with de
struction of life and property; while
in other quarters of tho globe wars
havo lifted tho veil from tho dawn of
n better civilization. Great enter
prises have been born into the com
mercial world, involving in individual
instances many millions of treasure.
Capital thus combined in vast sums
has menaced tho world of labor, pro
voking conflicts botweon brawn and
billions that have resulted disastrous
ly in many cases to both elements in
tho contests.
In nature and mood, however, tho
world has not changed much. Wo
continue to strugglu under conditions
quito like thoso of past years. Wo
aro moved by similar impulses. Our
ambitions nro much tho samo. In
deed, had wo not kept in oloso touch
