THE MAORI RACE.
Efforts) to Improve the Condition of
the Native New Zentun tern.
The census of New Zealand shown nn
oncoiirniliii lucrestso of the .Maori pop
ulation, ami the fact has given tpilto an
Impetus to the efforts now being niado
to Improve the condition of the race.
As was anticipated, tho royal visit hag
given a most favorable start to a pro
ject for tho education nnd training of
Maori girls, and the Duchess of Corn
wall and York won golden opinions by
her consent to lay the foundation stone
of the school at Auckland. In this
movement a leading part has been tak
en by a highly educated Maori chief,
who Is devoting his life to the Instruc
tion nnd training of his countrymen In
the laws of sanitation nnd the condi
tions that make for a healthy and hap
py life. Mr. A. T. Ngata Is a full
blooded Maori, who, having Deeu pri
marily taught In nntlvo schools, won
his way to an Auckland secondary
semlnnry, and then to tho university,
eventually taking the diplomas of M.
A. and LL. 11., and thereafter qualify
ing as a barrister. lie Is one of the
finest types of an educated Maori, and
for the last two years has been trav
eling through tho native settlements,
lecturing on social reform,
A dcflnlte scheme has now been In
augurated for the university education
of Mnorl youths as well as for tho
training of Mnorl girls In nursing, and
the scheme has been nlrendy partly
carried Into effect by the education de
partment. The government Is taking
steps to establish three technical
school? for the natives, one In the Wnl
kato, another on tho east coast, and ft
third In the Iloklanga district. Tho
school movement for girls has brought
Into notice nnother line specimen of
the race, the Itov. V. A. Bennett, n
fully ordained clergyman, n man or
powerful Intellect and a great force or
character. Ho Is n hair-caste and a
grandson of tho late Itcv. Dr. ,1. 11.
Dennett, once registrar general of tho
colony. On his mother's side ho claims
direct descent from Tutnneknl uiul
lllncmoa, the hero and heroine of tho
Maori Loander legend. Mr. Ilennott
owes his success In a measure to his
voice, for on one occasion Hlshop Sitter
of Nelson, when visiting the Hot Lakes
rtlHtrlct, was struck with his singing or
a Mnorl song, and forthwith took Mr.
Tlennett back to Nelson and there edu
cated him.
Much superstition still exists among
the Island tribes, where European Uir
fluences have scarcely reached, nnd
tho Tohuugas, or medicine men, nro
still responsible for the Iobb of many
lives. For Instance, they Insist on cold
water Immcrslou ror all fevers, for con
sumption, nnd other nllments. while an
other danger nrlses from the liking of
tho natives for low-lying lands near
tho river beds, where rood Hiqyylio
easily obtulued nnd cultivated, uni
tary precautions are quite dlspoaswl
with, and tho only wonder is thnt dlB
ense hits not claimed more victims, nml
by this time virtually exterminated tho
race. London Pall Mnll Cnzette.
