It Is not known precisely when or where artificial eye3 originated; but the annnls plainly show that In ancient times tho priests In Egypt and Rome, who practised ns physicians and sur geons, made artificial eyes, hands, arms, nnd lcgs-tho Egyptians as chrly ns GOO B. O. Their method of eye making Is thus described. On the cen ter ot a piece of flesh-colored prepared linen, two nnd a quarter Inches by one nnd n quarter, tho flat sldo of a piece of earthen ware, modelled llfe-slro and painted to represent the human eyo nnd eyelids, was cementtd; and this linen, coated on tho other side with an adhesive Btibstance, was placed over the eye and pressed down. These arti ficial eyes wcro therefore worn outsldo the cavity, and though not strictly ar tistic In design or detail, wcro no doubt fully appreciated and worn with pride by the monocular Egyptian and Honinn "toffs." It Is chronicled thnt one of these .nrtlllelnl eyes was picked up In tho ruins of I'ompcll, which waB destroyed in 70 A. D. Tho earliest known mention of mod ern artificial eyes that Is, eyes worn Insldo the orbit occurs In nu exceed ingly rare Illustrated worlc on Hurgery, written by a French surgeon named Ambrolse Tare, and published In Paris In 1C01. Pare Invented three artificial eyes. The first was n wonderful con trivance. It consisted of a thin metal spring-band which passed half way round the wearer's head, having on one end n small oval plate, which covered the orbit of the eye, and the other end pressed against tho bnck of tho head. The oval pinto was covered with smooth, soft leather, on which nn eyo was painted. It would, perhaps, bo dlllicult to devise anything moro Inclc gant or uncomfortable. Tho second device was a hollow globe-of gold, eyo shaped and eiinmcllcd, which was worn Inside tho socket the flrst recorded ar tificial eyo thus worn. The third con trivance was simply n "shell-pattern" eye, exnetly similar In shape to thoso now used, but mndo of gold, and enam elled. Except thnt they wero made of gold and ounmolled, the two lntter wero practically of tho snmo design nB tho "globo" and "shell" glass' oyos of the present day. Pore's clumsy, truss llko appllnnco nnd his two gold eyes, which were used only by tho wealthy, wero succeeded by eyes mndo of paint ed porcelain, and colored pearl-white, which Immediately became Immense ly popular. Next camo tho Invention of glass eyes, which Instantly super seded nil others, nnd still command tho public favor. Oluss eyes, which wero Invented In 15T0, were well known In Shnkspearo's time. In King Lear (Act. 4, sc. 0), written In 1(505 nnd first published In 1008, Lear, with crushing derision, thus advises tho blinded traitor Gloucester: "Get thee glass oyes; and . . . seem to see." As a strict nccosslty JQlouccr tcr would have required globo pattern eyes. In Shnkspearo's day glass eyes wero literally tho Uncut productions of very Inferior workmanship, the Iris nnd tho pupil being hnud-palutcd In tho best style of that rough-and-ready period. However, ns Father Time marched along, glass eyes progressed nnd Im proved In mnku and llulsh, especially within tho last half century; mid now they havo reached a high stnndnrd of oxccllcuco as works of art. REOENT INVENTIONS. Two French women havo patented a scrubbing brush which Is to bo attach ed to tho shoo by straps aud a heel plate, thus making It posslblo to clean floors whllo standing upright. A neat little attachment recently pat ented, to prevent blcyclo lamps from going out, consists of a pleco of wlro gauze bent to form n basket surround ing tho flnmo to shield It from sudden draughts of air. A new method of fastening spokes In wagon wheels consists of settlug a screw-threuded bolt In tho cud of tho spoke, with n nut countersunk In tho felly which can be turned to adjust tho felly to fit the tire. The smashing of a front wheel of a blcyclo by n collision Is prevented by a newly designed gunrd, which Is form ed of n metal rod bent V-shape, with tho point In front nnd the ends nttached to the ends of tho frout fork. Dust cannot gather In tho comers of a- room If a new comer-plate Is used which Is formed of n triangular sheet of metal with tho sides curved In and Is forced Into the corner by n special tool which causes It to grip tho wood and hold Itself In place. A newly designed barrel bung Is made of a section of Iron tubing, screw threaded to tit tho hole tightly, and nn outer flange to stop Its entry beyond the proper point, the Interior being fit ted with a metal plug having an elastic ring around Its edge and nn expauslblo screw to lock It lu position. Defeat. Ills regiment bad been ordered out, and be was saying a fond farewell to the girl he would so soon leave behind him. "But," said he, striving to take a cheerful look ahead, "after It Is all over wo will return as conquerors, march lug to strains of victorious music, and trlmphant trumpet blasts, and waving our tattled battle flags-er I menu our flattered battle tags-no " "You mean battled flatter tags " "Battered tattle flags " "Flattered tattle bags " "Tattered flattlo bags " And then they glvo It up.
