' ' IHJfl .cTE"W AGE, PORTJjA-ND. OREGON. J TOPICS OF THE TIMES. The wnrrlng Biignr Interests which expect to "do" ench other will naturally have a sweet time of It. It Is to be hoped Sir Thomas will ho Allowed to challenge for the cup again. He Is such n cheerful loser. The country hoy has the best chance to be President. Itoosevelt Is the only President who was city born. A Missouri epitaph reads: "John Binlth. Fell asleep April 10 from Inter ruptlng a mule nt dinner time." Palmistry parties are the fad In fash ionable circles. That's nothing new. Every man will reniemlM-r holding palmistry parties, oh, say, twenty yeurs ago. O rent llrltulii can at least clutn ono advantage over us. We haven't a circus In the country whose parade can com pare with the coming royal coronation show. Tho census, by demonstrating tho fact that there are more females than mail's In this country, proves lucoutest ihly that some of the males must ueces eurlly bo left. An KngllMi physician declares that peoplo bathe too freely and wnsh out tho natural oils that keep the skin In condition. Evidently the English win ter Is not so severe as the winter here. Henry Wattersou has written a long edltorll on "Opportunities for Young Men." Can It he possible that his le lief In the opportunities for young men Jh responsible for the Inclination he has to run for high otllceV Urover Cleveland thinks It would bo better for the world If there wero less of this mad fortuue-ehaslug and more Uniting. Hut anybody who has been so flucccHsful In chasing a fortune as Mr. Cleveland has can atl'ord to go tlshlug. The pension attorney Is certainly a model of Industry- He has discovered, or thinks he has, that under an old law volunteers In the Spanish war are entitled to bounty. The pension olllco Insists there Is no such valid claim, but this will not prevent the pension at torney from raking In numerous fees. Life Is sacred and should ho protect ed against tho result of carelessness. Tho fool who does not think at all kills more people than the mlscreaut whose thoughts are evil. Tho Idiot who rocks tho boat, who leaves u loaded rltle In tho house or who snaps u revolver which Is not supposed to be loaded lu tho faco of a friend Is more to bo dread ed than tho murderer. It seems to afford a lawyer peculiar satisfaction to call a brother lawyer a puttlfogger, or a lobster, or something of that sort, lu tho preseueu of tho court, Instead of passing the compli ment outside tho court room. The pruetlco Is surely not followed for tho purpose of conveying Information to the court, which Is usually well In formed on tho subject of lobsters, legal and otherwise. The medical fraternity are born scoff crH. livery fresh discovery Is treated with derision. "Of no practical value," U the comment umdu on one of the lat est nud most valuable contributions to science tliu discovery by u German scientist that the mental duration of tho downward inowmi-iit of tho eyelid lu a wink Is from .070 to ,Utl of a second, and the mental duration of tho wink complete .1 of a second. A passenger on an ocean steamer was warned by an olllcer that tliu mau who was steadily winning his money In a Kami) of chance was a professional gambler. Tho pntthcuger' replied that ho was awart) of tliu fact, but was playing to t.ee how the gambler contriv ed to cheat him. When the experiment had cost him several thousand dollars, nud tho Investigation was still unsuc cessful, he abandoned tho problem. Gamblers ask for nothing better than to have such Investigators at work, whether 'on sea or on land. There Is much discussion of the ques tion whether the Industrial opportuni ties for young men are as great to-day its formerly. However this may be, with all tho concentration of wealth that has gone on and with all tho group ing of capital Into vast combinations, the avenues to tho highest piefermeut tiro by no means closed to young men without money. Indeed, one Is some times disposed to ask If they are not wider open than ever, For It Is a fact that Industrial and financial manage ment Is drifting more and more Into liou-owuershtp hands. This necessarily follows from the grouping of capital Into such great masses that the indi vidual capitalist, no matter how wealthy, tends to losu much of his Indi vidual mastery over tho particular busi ness or corporation lu which ho Is In terested. Tho corn-cob pipe Is a plebeian thing, but It serves to Illustrate tho utility of n happy thought. Thlrty-tlvo or forty years ago a -Missouri wood carver, poor In this world's goods, turned out the bowl of a pipe from n corn cob nnd bowed It to his family, Later ho con cluded to manufacture tho pipes. Ho died a very wealthy man. Ono of his factories uow turns out 17,000,000 of fob pipes every year. The farmers. who live In the vicinity of the pipe fac tories so It Is stated, sell their cobs for more than they get from tho corn Itself. Several farmers In the vicinity gain an Income of as much as $4,000 n year from the sale of the cobs alone. The solution of the problem of produc tion has been along the Hues, largely; of utilizing the waste products. The man who Invents n process by which something hitherto wasted Is converted Into something valuable Is a philan thropist no less than the man who makes two blades of grass grow where only one has grown. V. U. Ilowells recently declared that reading bus become for many people a craze, even u vice, rather than nn In tellectual gain. They read too much, too fast, too promiscuously, nnd they think and talk too little. Such reading replaces undesirably even gossip, which may be, and often Is, a bad thing, but ought to be, and can Imj, a good 'one, "Good fiction' Mr. Ilowells asserts, "Is only an exquisite distillation of human facts, which biography and history more and less attractively embody; nnd all three are gossip depersonalized by remoteness of time or place." He adds that there Is no reason why our own spoken gossip might not be such as to produce the effect of "all that Is charm ing nnd edifying In these forms of liter ature." Here Is the opportunity for a now line art! SInco wo do, naturally, talk about our neighbors, why not study how to do so fitly and finely, rather than Intrusively and pettily? No manual of gosslpry Is yet published, but when "The Perfect Gossip" does Issue from the press, It will contain home advice quite easy to anticipate. Its first page will forbid prying, de preciation, malice and mockery. It will recommend the cultivation of char ity and a senso of humor, the study of character, and of graceful and utiexng gerated expression. Criticism It may tolerate as a wholesome social Influ ence, hut criticism will Itself bo criti cised nud discredited at the least suspi cion of haste or harshness. Good and graceful acts, noble, charming or odd characters graphically portrayed, will bo acclaimed among graduates In tho Gentle Art; wlso Interpretation, gener ous excuse, delicate appreciation will enrich their conversation. Light nnd worthless rending nlxnit Imaginary peo plo will Have given place to bright and worthy talking about real ones. Since 1851, when the America cup was won In Kngltsh waters, there havo been twelve unsuccessful contests for Its recovery. The most of tho con tests havo been very spirited and the ICugllsh challengers who wanted to get the trophy back have spent much money nnd energy In tho effort. They havo built now boats. They havo ex perimented with uow sailing masters and crews. They have applied all tho means at their command to defeat an American yacht lu the struggle for pos session of tho cup. It would bo a marvel If English skill In naval architecture should not at sumo time plan nnd build a better boat than American sclonco could produce. It Is not Improbable that the .Shamrock II. Is a better craft than tho Columbia. Hut the American sailors wero superior lu skill to tho Kngllsh sailors. Their yacht was better managed. Tho Columbia sought every advantage of the shifting and Incon stant breezes, while tho Shamrock II. never seem to know of a change until after It had occurred and had tilled tho Columbia's sails with Its advantages. This could not have been altogether be cause American waters were now to ICugllsh sailors and that they were not familiar with the local drift of winds and currents. Tho America won tho first International race lu English wa ters. There cannot bo so much differ eneo between tho weather conditions on ono side of tho Atlantic and on tho other side as to seriously handicap tho management of either vessel. This suggestion that It was tho better crow, not tho better boat, which won the raco has made such an Impression that a change of crews and vessels for a now raco has been suggested. It Is talked about lu England. It would bo a great test of seamanship as well as a test of tho yachts. If the yachts should change crews for this experiment some time for practice would be required by both shies, but they ought to try It. It might result In tho solution of a great Inter national problem. A lliiiimuo I'att'r.
