Gilbert, the Mot Delight fill Old Lnriy or the Mngs. A recent tlientrlenl feature was the celebration, nt St. Louis, of the clghtl eth birthday of Mrs. G. II. Gilbert, tho most delightful old lady of the stage. Mrs. Gilbert has been on the stage for sixty-eight yents, having made her first appearance In the Ilnllct School of Her Majesty In London at the Ilaymnrkct In 1835, and she Is still In excellent health and uncomplaining. Time has dealt ""gently with her, as her powers of endurunce are remarkable. She has outlived the manager Daley who once called hei"Granduin,' with whom she was from 1800 until his death In 1809. Then It was that Frolimnn sent for her, and she-says she felt like sho MltS. AN.VIK IIAIITI.KY OII.llKnT. was beginning life all over again, leav ing the almost life-long old friends for u hordo of nuw fuces. Mrs. Gilbert was a dancing girl for years and years, and to this sho attrib utes her buoyancy In old age. Sho claims her first real lilt wns In,"Drom njah" In a little dance which she Intro duced on the; Impulse of the moment as sho wns skipping from the stnge, at tho end of the scene. It caught the audi ence's fancy, nnd from that tlmo on her dunce became a feature. 8ho came to America In 18-10, nnd In her tlmb has supported Edwin Forrest, John Hroughnm, and wns for a long time one of Daly's "Hlg Four." the oth ers being Adn ltchan, James Lewis nnd John Drew. Hho played for years In Daly's Now York theater, In stock com panies, taking parts with Agnes Ethel In "Frou F'rou." then with Clara Mor ris in "Man nnd Wife," and with Fun ny Du'rcuport In her plays. Any youiiK innn who wishes to ob tain an education at the Missouri State University need not he deterred bo- cause of lack of funds, because tho Young Men's Christian Association has made It possible for every student who tleslreH to obtain work. This society has maintained an employment bureau for the last three years, ami very suc cessfully. At the bcKlnultiK of tho year a list of the places whero work can bo secured Is posted, and every effort to assist youtiK men to help themselves Is made. The hinds of work which stu dents can do are many, uuiouk them cnrpentcrlui;, painting, gardening, printing, type writing, bookkeeping, janitor work, furniture moving, clean ing, wood sawing, repairing, ditching, 'harvesting nnd so on. Hon. Martin G. Mrumbntigh, United States Commissioner of Kilucatlon for Porto Hlco, says lu his annual" report: Almost every school on the Island tuts an American ling. One hundred and eighty were recently presented by tho Vnfayctte post, G. A. It., of New York, 3ty. These now lloat over tho new 'tools opened lu October Inst. Tho pa- Ijtlc philanthropy of this post Is ! or thy of all commendation, lu almost tvery city of tho Island and at many rural schools tho children meet nnd sa- lite the ting as It Is thing to tho breezo. ) ho raising of tho Hag Is tho signal lhat school tins commenced, nnd tho ting floats during tho outlro session. The pupils then slug "America," "Hall, Cohtmbln," "Stnr-Spnugled Bnuner," and other patriotic songs. Tho marvel Is that they slug them In English. The llrst English that many of them know Is the English of our national songs. Few Mountain l'oaks In Europe. Wbllo tho Alps have Isolated peaks such as Mont Wane (15,781 feet) nnd th Matterboru (HS3U) the mean ele vation of the highest Alpine chain Is from only 8,000 to 0,000 feet. Colorado possesses more than 120 peaks over 13, 600 feet In altitude, of which no fewer than thirty-live peaks range from 14, 000 upward. In the whole of Europo there are not over twelve mountain peaks of uote. Depth of the Ocean. Dr. John Murray, lecturing In Glas gow recently on the depths of the ocean, said tho average depth of the sea wns something like 13,000 feet. If all the lands of the continents were lev eled down tho ocean would envelopo tho whole earth to a depth of two miles. The greatest depth of tho ocean yet found was In the Atlantic, off the Virgin Islands. It was 5,555 fathoms, or about 250 feet less than six miles. WELLS, of Villa Ridge, 111., says: "Your trial bottle of Atthmalene received in good condition. I cannot tell you how thankful I feel for the good derived from it. I was a slave chained with putrid sore throat and Asthma for ten years. I despaired of ever being cured, I saw your advertisement for the cure of this dreadful and tormenting. disease, asthma, and thought you had overspoken yourselves, but resolved to give it a trial. To my astonishment the- trial acted like a charm. Send me a full-size bottle." We want to send to every sufferer a trial treatment of Asthma lene. similar to the one I hit cured Mr. Wells.
