TBJfl .ixEW AGE, PORTLAND, OBEGOK. TOPICS OF THE TIMES. It Ib Rotting to bo a Ions tlmo be tween scniulnls. The mill of to-day grinds with the water that hns passed Into steam. "Conscience," snyH the Manayunk Philosopher, "Is that wlthlu its which telfs us when soinehody elne Is doing wrong." S).iln talks of iUioIIhIiIiik her navy. Perhaps she fears that next time she would be compelled to pay for the court of Inquiry. Women nre to have a direct volco In the innnnRemi'iit of tho Methodist Church hereafter limteiul of running It by proxy, aB of yore. The women of Germany arc about to be granted the right of free speech. Af ter having been silent so long they will probably liavo a good deal to Hay. According to statistics Just publish ed, the HweJes are the tallest peop'.o In the world. Hut It may be noted that the statistics were published at Htock holm. It will now be Interesting to wntch the Massachusetts Iustliute of Technol ogy and see how a great educational Institution gets along without a foot ball department. A member of tho congregation at Klmbell Springs, Ky., Ilred u revolver at the preacher, but missed him. Ken tucklaus are In danger of losing their reputation as marksmen. One of tho greatest reforms In tho history of Kentucky has been Institut ed. Tho Confederate Veterans' Asso ciation of that .State has passed a reso lution to rccoguUu no military tltlu not won In war. Tho New York Press In a treatise on names claims that to-lay Reginald Kg remout Montague and Howard Cecil do Vere are shoveling hash In a subside walk restaurant while .Sir Poter dub bins and William Smith are doing tho world's work. Measurements of salmon leaps may now be Included In high-Jump records. Htundurds were erected below water falls by Norwegian fishery commission ers. Tho Hull are credited with a max imum of twenty feet In tho olllelal re turns. Contemporary Jumpers on land tuiut own that tho salmon Is u worthy competitor. Tho funny men will havo to rovlflo their mothor-lu-law Jokes. A Chicago man was so fond of his legal relative that ho employed detectives to help him flml her after she had moved out of his house. Of course, tho fact that she took a sofa with her In which tho man had hidden $rsK) may have lullueuced him, but this should not mar tho Inci dent for tho professional Jester. Tho dlvorco evil Is not an evil per fe. It Is tho result of an nbuso of a means of relief which has a definite status In tho law and In society. The remedy U not to bo found In any ex treme, but In a sensible, practical, con servative course, which takes account of facts and conditions as they exist. And, above all, no plan should bo adopted which Imposes punishment or hardship on the Innocent for the wrongs of the guilty. The man who composed "Home, Bweet Home," never had a home. Tho man who composed "On the Hanks of the Wabash" never had a bank. The man who composed "Haby Mlno" nev er had a irtlne. The man who composed "My Hark Is on the Sea" never had it dog. The man who composed "Tramp! Tramp! Tramp" never owned a tomato can. The man who -but probably we have carried this far enough.- Kansas City Journal. Hut why not carry It further? The man who wrote "After the Hall" never batted his eye. The man who wrote ".lust as the Sun Went Down" never had a sun. The man who wrote "Just One (!lrl," however, proti nbly had half a dozen. The further you carry It tho more Interesting It be comes. Dr. Vial, of Paris, hypnotized n Miss Thome, an Australian lady, slttlug.op poslto him In an omnibus. He did It to prove his power to another physician who was with htm. The doctor com pelled the girl to follow him to his of llee, where, In tho presence of several physicians, other experiments were conducted, l'or example, when he or dered her to stab a fruit vender across the street Miss Thome seized a knlfo and started Immediately. Dr. Vial then roused her from the trance, ex plained everything, apologized and of fered to pay any fee demanded. Miss Thome went home dazed and after ward was very 111. She told her brother what had happened, and he, after thrashing tho doctor soundly, sued for damages, It Is dltllcult to see wherein h doctor has any more right to drag u persou around by her mind than by her car. Sooner or later tho courts will Imvo no to decide. Kiwy tllvorwij KiuutiM lr American cmirtH nro nut valid under tho laws or Canada, Tho division In a recent case honld ho n warning to divorced pco jilo nmkliiK exenndons across tho boun dary lino bo t ween tho United States and tho dominion. They may be mar rtod according to law on ono ildo of tho lino and uot married on tho other. A few years ago a woman named Wood living liu-Toronto was married to Dr. IlnruhanU of tiie samo pluce. Not very long afterward Dr. llarnhardt slipped over to Detroit) remained there long enough o troquro a legal residence un der tho laws of Michigan and then pro cured a dlvorco from Ills Toronto wife. Probably she was In collusion with him In these proceedings. Hut that question was not raised nt any subse quent time. After tho divorce she mar ried Pcudrlll of Toronto. Except the dlvorco episode at Detroit It was n To ronto nllalr from first to last. This marriage proved unsatisfactory to the -husband, but ho could tlnd no causo for divorce. Ho therefore caused his wlfo to bo prosecuted criminally for bigamy In marrying him while she had not a legal divorce from Dr. llarnhardt, her .former husband. In this suit the decision In tho case of Karl Hussell, tried In tho English Houso of Lords, was followed. It was decided that an American divorce Is not valid In any part of the Hrltlsh empire. The "ise was appealed and niny go to the highest- Hrltlsh courts. Hut It has caused much anxiety In all tho border cities, where many divorced people under American laws have remarried nnd are residents. The enforcement of tho de cision would 'unmarry In every case American divorced people If they hud remarried and should Vit.lt Unglaud on a tour of foreign travel. Thomas Nelson Page, whoso opinion In a matter of literature commands re spect, seems In a recent Interview to feel that things literary are ut present In a bad way. "People no longer ask," said Mr. Page, "If a book Is n work of art, but If It Is one of the half dozen best selling books of tho year." This tendency, of course, results In the neg lect of tho valuable and tho perma nent, and In tho cultivation of tho ephemeral, which Is a courteous equiv alent of trashy. Mr. Pago no doubt has substantial reasons for tho opinion ho expressed. Hut It Is only natural, In tho oplulou of tho Chicago Tribune, that a man who Is In the midst of tho fight should bo somewhat disturbed by the unexpected strength of tho enemy and should not at first bo aware that perhaps tho foes he Is confronting have always existed and seem new ami strange only because they aro now In n somewhat different guise. Tho com plaint about tho trashy has been the diversion of tho critics of all ages. Mr. Kipling assures us In one place that tho cava men felt that the days of tho true romance had passed uway, nud In another that tho primitive poet who wrote tribal lays was met with tho re monstrance that "his work was pretty, but was It Art?" Ono can read In tlio publisher's prefaco to tho first edition of Milton's lyrical poems that If the publisher had wished to mako money ho would havo published something else, "for that this ago hath no Just tasto and would profor other things." In a later generation Pope has Immor talized tho "maudlin poetesses" and "rhyming peers" who "raged and re cited" till ho thought that "all Hod lam or Paruassus had broko loose," And to como down to modorn times, If any ono will take tho troublo to resur rect the trash of 1850, now happily hurled, he will havo more toteraueo for tho trash of to-day. There Is still an other oxcuso for tho present age, how over, .besides that to bo found In tho fact that It Is little, If at all, worao than Its predecessor. Tho standard of tnsto Is lowered by tho tromeudous In crease In tho number of readers. Thou sands of men and women have as yet no test for a book except Its popu larity. After they havo read for some tlmo they will begin to discriminate for themselves, but at preseiMhey go with tho tide. Tho noble army of novel readers Is recruited largely from this class of persons. Hut Is tho fact that a largo proportion, say even tho larger part, of tho reading public Is now occu pied with worthless novels to be taken as a proof that there Is not still n "nt audlenco, though few," which listens to tho words of the best writers both of tho past nud of the present? And Is there any way of showing that that audience Is smaller now than before? On the contrary, may It not bo larger? The sale of "classic" authors continues steadily. Shakspeare comes out lu new editions every year. Kven men llko Sir Thomas Hrowne, Gray ami Pater, who can hardly expect an overwhelm ing popularity, are not without their largo hotly of admirers. Might It uot be said, then, that although perhaps the whole lump of readers Is larger now In proportion to the leaven of the Judicious than ever before, the leaven still exists, and that lu time It will ac complish the work which Is prophesied for It In the scriptures? llluuk Sumv. Of red snow wo nil know something from books on the High Alps, lllack snow except when It Is "mnnufac tured" In London, and consists of a tlno blend of soot and slush Is less well known. Hut It might havo been some tlmo ago In u corner of tho Mnrvtte Valley, where n dark snow, which formed n thick layer, almost black, on tho ground," came down In n heavy shower, lll-siuelllug, It was and, what Is worse, Its color represented nn enor mous host of tiny Insects. A strong wind, wo aro told, brought them over from some distant port. IirKt Vino In the World. Korth Carolina claims the largest grapevine In tho world. It Is on tho farm of 11. 1 Meoklus, ltoauoko Islaud, not far from tho site of Fort Raleigh, ami near tho birthplace of Virginia Dure. It Is claimed that tho vino was planted by 8lr Walter Kalelgh's 111 fated colony In 1587. It Is of tho Seup pernong variety, covers an aero of ground, and yields about a ton f grapea annually. cost $i,aao, eoo. V t r The Portland H. O. BOVfEKS, Mmnmger.
