So often tiro effects of this char acter incorporated In new gowns, thnt they conatltuto n characteristic of the season's fuuhions, this though they appear In a variety of forms. Though theru tire other sorts of boss than the Huffy, transpar ent ones, the lntter nro in n majority. They are uindo iu block, white or in delicate shades, the black and white be ing more numerous, They come in chif fon, mouHsclino do polo, point d'esprlt, dotted pet and silk crepe do chine. Those of dotted net and point d'esprit arc most VELVET AS TRIMMING abundant. All are fluffy and have long ruffled ends. Fichus' niudo of soft, trans parent materials are also seen on hand some evening and cloth dresses. Some are plain, while others arc elaborately embroidered and trimmed with lace. Elaborateness need not mark the finish if (t has a novel touch. The fichu ar rangement of the gown shown in this initial picture was, for instance, as effec tive as if it had been fiuished freely with costiy lace. It was uiousselitie du solo" finished with ruflles, and trimmed a gown of link- gray albatross. In tho same gen eral line of ornamentation are small dou ble, triple and Blnglu shoulder capes of chiffon and tnoussellne de sole. These SUGGESTIONS OF SLEEVE VARIATIONS. are won for evening, and are made up In all the light, dellcato shades, sometimes matching the costume, again contrasting with it. Muffs of chiffon and moussellne trimmed with fur will accompany these capes Inter In the season. Another characteristic of the season Is the free u of velvet. This Is so marked that were It not for the use of more or less velvet at all times. It would stand as the dominant feature of the season. In trimmings velvet appears In familiar fonus or In waya that are striking for newness. By tho former method it ordi uorily is used lavishly, while the newer trimmings may require very little vel vet. Then whole gowns are made of it, and they are not, as often has been the case iu the past, left almost untrimmed to Impress. by their richness alone, bat TB.rAftffy f tTrp seFoffwltfr qnltc as muchoriMnnenta tion as would bo'put, on jeloth or sllK. iwo typical Illustrations Nf; current uses of Veltqt appear-In1 thtsl sictiad' illustration. ii'Hn iari MrtMfB nn n annn-nn an .I'niM'iit u trimming from a little. The other model was a black Telvet gown, with white satin front panel and applique of black taffeta and sliver braid. To read of such orrnngwnent, they seem like piling richness on rich ness, yet as done nowadays the result is handsome and entirely without sugges tion of overdoing. Skirts are little changed. If tho now skirts arc examined carefully one will see here and there n suggestion of inoro full ness around the hips, but this is not tho rule, there being quite ns many close fitting skirts as ever. Ono pretty model Is In box-pleats nu inch and a half wide all around and stitched down tint to the kiil'c. Another is made of many narrow gores shuplng out in n pretty flare around the feet nnd fitting tho hips perfectly, without an extra inch of material except directly at the back, where the Inserted pleats are stitched down a few inches from the waist line. All the senilis nro lapped and stitched to giro an nppcarnnce of pleats. The full skirts that were in troduced Inst spring are seen mostly in thin materials, nnd many art In tucks around the hips to make the effect ns trim ns possible. The shaped flounce Is still present In all the familiar forms. One model of cloth is covered from waist to hem with scant clrculnr mules. Other skirts have one, two or three circular AND MATERIAL. flounces, beginning at either side of tho front breadth. Many skirts are trimmed down the front with tucks, bauds or crois wise straps of velvet finished on the edge with perpendicular bauds or galloon, Tho fashionable sleeve is varied In ev ery possible miinner between the simple coat sleeve nnd the exaggerated kimoun shape, which appears In some of the new loose coats. One thing noticeable Is that the fullness is oil below the elbow, II nro beginning Just nbovc It. In dressy gowns the flowing effect is made with frills of double chiffon nnd wide lace edging, nnd tho under sleeve is a close fitting trans parent affair finished with a straight wristband. Some of the sleeves in heavy wool material ore full nud puffy below the elbow with a deep wristbund fitting Iho arm closely. The straight sleeve end lug below the elbow In bell shape, falling over a long, full undersleeve is one of the novelties, and here is the little cuff and old-time lace frill over the hands. The sleeves shown lu to-day's third picture bespeak the existing variety. I'Jrst come sleeves of smocked bright red silk ami wool eolienne, with finish of deep rallies. Below this are narrow bishop sleeves la biscuit broadcloth, with deep cuffs of sil ver thread mbroidery. There remain two examples of bell sleeves, the first of dark blue broadcloth, with white flannel puffs from the under bodice; the other light brown cheviot, trimmed with dark brown velvet folds, cloth undersleeves of a pale blue bodice showing.
