I, I V THE j&EM AGE, FOItTL AJTO. OBHGON. J TOPICS OF 5 THE TIMES. ) In that race In the nrctlc tho winner Is bound to ho re the pole. A small boy snys It Is Impossible to Judge the effect of n dipper by Its size. Ilerr Most says he Is opposed to law yers. This renews our confidence In them. In nhvnys makes n veterinary sur geon Indignant to hear a dentist called "doctor." The man with nntl-collapslblo views must Indulge In vestibule trains of thought. It Is claimed Unit dentistry prolongs life. As hns been said of matrimony, It certainly makes It seem longer. The airship Beems to be a good deal like tho learner's bicycle. If It sees n steeple or n tioc, It makes right for It. Czolgosrs trial was short, but It was long enough to make the folly of his crime evident to every annrchlst In America. Gold Is n wonderful fertilizing agent. It has caused many a family tree to spring up and get Its full growth In a few hours. With six children In the White House the staid old servants of tho establish ment will get a sure-enough taste of tho Htrenuous llfo. Even the greatest man of sclenco may as well peacefully submit to hnv lug his Judgment set aside when the baby's grandmother takes a hand. They don't sell polaco furniture on the Installment plan In Teklug, which may account for tho court's resolution to reinuln In Kill 1'ong Koo two years more. A railway train bearing four kings, two queens mid twenty-eight princesses and princes arrived at Copenhagen re cently. The number of two-spots Is not reported. James J. Corbett, one of the pugilistic cx-rays, says ho wears no diamonds be cause they are vulgar. Most people do not object to u few vulgarities locked up In the mtfo. King Oscar of Sweden Is an author, n historian, an orator, an artist and a dramatist, and he also writes poetry und plays the accordion. Vet ho Is pop ular. The good peoplo of Sweden huve some peculliu traits. When a man marries n socond time, ovory woman of his ac(imlntanco says: "1 knew It. That's Just like n man." When n woman marries a second time, her woman acquaintances commend her for her good sense nnd express the hope that shu will be happier than she was with her first husband. The widely advertised fact that the White IIoiiku has hut live bedrooms for the family and the guests should keep the undesirable people who might bu determined to come on and stay a month at n satisfactory distance. If they persist In coming, howuver, It might be well for them to tote along a camping outfit, or at least a hammock. Henri l'euu du Hols pays all Ameri cans a great compliment. Ho says that these three phrases from McKlnWy, 'Do not tell my wife," "Do not harm the poor fellow," and "I am sorry to disturb the happiness of the exposi tion," lire phrases palpitating with tho American regard for others. Wo can accept this true compliment as an off set to the declaration iff that French actress who says all American men are boors. (.live the girls the best of education. Let them have college education If pos sible. The way m gvt at the boys of the future Is by means of the girls who are to be their mothers. Too much at tention has been given to the boys ami not enough to the girls. If the boys of n college woman are capable of receiv ing a college education they stand the best chance of getting It. The best side of the house Is the mother side of It. If the girls are put forward the boys will get In the neighborhood. The legal profession has been allowed to have practically Its own way In de termining the methods of procedure In our courts, Tho lawyers have abused the confidence of tho people by Invest ing those methods with such a cloud of technicalities as to make the dealing out of justice to knaves so sllttlcult and costly a process that prosecuting attor neys have often, when faced by tho prospect of a long-drawn battle with unscrupulous lawyers retained by a criminal, preferred to enter a nolle pros, rather than mulct tho community In heavy costs without avail; and crimi nals of all degrees walk the streets uu scathed. The Hurfalo bar showed, In thu Czolgokz case, how much better tho lawyers can serve the community when they have the heart for It. If tho bar In every American city would follow that example, not only In regard to murderers but toward criminals of ev ery degree, what a sudden nccesslon of majesty and effectiveness would come to the Law! Sixty years ago cotton was known everywhere as king. The reason why cotton was called king was because the money tho United States received for It from foreign countries was larger than It received for Its broadstuffs and Its provisions, uotton coniinucu 10 o a r t . Df king until the.reepal of tho. cotton law of England, .the discovery of. petroleum In the United States, and the Immense Increment In our exported, provisions because of the large demand from.'Eu rope" for our meats.4 So cotton wtfs de throned, and bresdstuffs and provisions and petroleum and machinery became dominating factors In Uic exports of our country. In the whirligig of time af fairs have changed and cotton has again become king. The returns for Ute fiscal year, ending Juno 80, 1001, shows a condition of affairs which no American can forget. The price of cot ton has been so high during the past year and the demand so steady from Europe, that its exported value reaches the enormous sum of 1313,073,433, the largest in the history of tho United States. The nation received only $275, G1M,018 for Its breadstuff, or $33,000, 000 less thou for Its raw cotton. This puts the South again In the ascendant. Seventy years ago the sea Island cot ton of South Carolina, becauso It had a long staple and was of the finest qual ity, was the best cotton on the globe. The a ix' a was narrow and small on which that quality of cotton was raised. Now by the annexation of mighty Tex as we receive as good a quality of cot ton from that State as the sea Islands furnished. When Texas was annexed no ono dreamed of Its future possibili ties. The United States has been so fortunate that, whatever territory It re ceives or tnkes, our people discover un told and hidden treasures In Its soil. The cotton of Egypt and the cotton of India Is short staple and not to be com pared to the cotton of tho United States, and therefore American cotton will continue to be the king In the world markets. Every few years statistics of some kind report that human life is growing longer. One enthuslsastlc claim Is made to the effect that within tho last half century tho nverago of life hns been extended over ten years and that for a long time It was fixed at 33, whereas now It Is closo to 45. Whether this claim can be proved Is doubtful, but all HtatlstlcH seem to agree thut the aver age Is advancing and that the quality of life Is Improving with thu quantity. Men at GO, 70 and 75 are still In active business where formerly they wero set aside nt a much earlier ago as too old to work. The passago In 1'salms which puts a man's age at three-score and ten or nt most four score years him doubtless limited the expectation nnd ambition of men and led thorn to regard that period as tho fixed nnd in evitable boundary of all thut makes II fu worth living for them, says tho Chi cago Chronicle. It Is uulto possible however, that another passago of scrip ture, wholly, overlooked In tho recogni tion given to tho other, may bo pressed Into service and the limit of man's as piration aud endeavor be fixed nt 120. Whllo tho Psalmist say's "three-score nnd ten," In Genesis we find tho Lord saying: "Man's days shall be a hundred aud twenty years," Why may not this text Incite man to pass from what It Is, ns given In Psalms, to what shall bo, as given In Geuesls? Why not ex pect a longor llfo? If, ns scientists say, the period of development In nu animal Ib one-sixth of his appointed life man ought to llvo his 120 years. Tho tluio Is ripe for such an expecta tion. Consumption, the great post of civilization, Is decidedly on tho wane. Contagious diseases are hunted to their germ aud destroyed. Surgery Is ad vancing with rapid strides and medical treatment is getting on a moro scien tific basis each year. 8onltary meas ures In the home, tho school, church and theater are moro Imperative and hygienic laws of every kind aro hotter understood. Further than this, the number of schools, colleges and univer sities that aro multiplying throughout tho laud Imply larger brain power In the future, more wisdom nnd moro foresight. Other things being equal, the scholar lives longer than tho Ignor ant aud his powers are more enduring In extremo old age. Athletics are do ing their part In the conservation nnd direction of physical energy. At pres out they are In the experimental stage, but they will eventually bo reduced to sclenco and mankind will reap the ben efit. On tho whole, there Is every en couragement to believe Mint the years of human llfo may bo Increased and Mint, too, without any fear that their length must necessarily be "labor and sorrow." From nu econlmlcal ns well as from every other point of view the Increase would be a boon to humanity. His Nnvliifc Courtesy. "I hnvo n patient who Is wonderfully considerate of my Interests," snld a prominent physician lately. "A few weeks ago he had malaria, aud I pre scribed quinine for him, giving him four grain capsules, so that he might take the drug without discomfort. Ho emtio out of his attack, and n few days later called to see me at my otllce. Judge of my surprise when he exhibit ed tho empty capsules nud snld, 'Doc tor, I thought you might like tho llttlo bqttles, so I saved them nnd brought thorn back,' He had emptied eneli four grain dose of tho bitter powder nnd then essayed the rather hopeless task of washing It down with water. I couldn't do otherwtso than to take the 'little bottles' from him without a word, and next time I'll give hi m qutnlno lu another form." Philadelphia Ledger. Growth of the Heard.
