MAN WITH 4 FINOEHS AND TOES Prof. Frederick Starr, of the Univer sity of Chicago, who Is looking for peo ple with an extra allowance of Angers or toes, would bo delighted to meet a servant of the Marquis de Ballncourt, who Is exciting much Interest among European scientists. He Is a young man, and on each hand he has six well developed Angers, while on each foot he has an equal number of wcll-deVel-oped toes. It Is not known whether ho Inherited tills anomaly, tils Btipernu- mcrary members are of no special use to him, but ho Ih never allowed to for get that he possesses them, as his com rudes, for an abvloun reason, have nick named him "Twenty-four." Dr. Cnpltan, 'a well-known ethnolo gist, writing on this subject, snys "There are two foruiB of this singular phenomenon, the true and tha hybrid. HAND WITH SIX FINORH". In the true form, as seen In the case ot tho mamuls' servant, the stincruumer- ary lingers and toes are complete addi tional members, tho lingers being usu ally placed beside the thumbs mid the toes beside tho great toes. In the hy brid form, 011 tho other hand, the ad ditional Angers and toes are merely n result of a division which has taken place In the regular members. "The thumb Is the part usually af fected, and It may be divided at the first Joint, though the division general ly starts at tho base. All the other Angers may be divided In a slmllur manner; Indeed, as many as fifteen lin gers have been found on one hand. Atavism Is evidently the cause, but one would have to travel very far back In order to discover tho origin of such Angers and toes." Theodore Watts-Dutton's memoirs nro to bo published In a few months, lie was a friend of Swinburne, Itos settl, Morris and several other Impor tant figures In Victorian literature, Tho new novel by Mrs. Hugh Frnser soon to appear tells of a Scandinavian consul nt a Japanese port, his daughter and 11 British nobleman.
