OY AS TELEGRAPH MANAGER.
Roy Rote, 14 Tears Old. Tnlcea Charge
of Important Office.
Hoy Rose, 14 yenrs old, Is the young
est Western Union telegraph office
manager in the country.
A. B. Taylor, superintendent of tele
graph for the West Suoro Koad, has
had a deal of difficulty In getting a
man for the West 42d street office In
New York. Iu one week not long ago
three old and experienced operators
tried It, and quit because of the Intri
cate messages.
Mr. Perrlan, assistant to Supt. Tay
lor, In despair wired his old friend, O.
W. Hose, ticket agent at Mount Marlon,
next above Kingston: "If you llnd any
one who can do It tell him to come down
and go to work at the West 42d street
station."
Next morning when Perrlan called
up the West 4'Jd street station some one
answered whose touch nnd precision
In telegraphy startled him.
"He's a good man," said Perrlan.
Several days went by, and Perrlan,
well pleased with the new man's work,
thought hed run over nnd see what the
new man looked like.
Ah he stepped Into the office a rather
stout boy of 14, rosy cheeked, with
brown eyes, looking out sharply from
behind eyeglasses, his straw hat pushed
back on his head, was sitting at the
desk reading a message, n
"Hullo, sonny, whore's the new man
tiger?" asked Perrlan.
"I'm tho manager," the boy replied.
Perrlan laughed. "No fooling, whero
Is he? I want to sec him."
"Well, you can look at me. My name
Is Itoy Itose, and I'm tho new mana
ger. Who aro you?"
"Why, I'm Perrlnn. But I didn't
know you were a boy. Are you tho one
sent down by Hose?"
"Yes, he's my father. I have been
here live days, and I gtfess I can do It."
Tho surprised assistant superintend
ent shook the lad's hand In nma.cment
nnd pleasure. Hose hnd sent the best
operator he could llnd, and so well did
ho do the work that threo other men
hnd failed to do ho will bo retained.
"I like everything here but the mos
quitoes," tho boy said. He Is saving
his money to go to college.
TOOK A RUNNING JUMP.
Mike Followed the Advice or Ilia Wife
nnl Lttiiulel In the It Ivor.
Many have heard tho story of the two
Norwegian brothers. Ouo of them was
on the boat when she started out. She
was thirty feet from the dock when the
other brother came rushltiK down, Just
a few seconds too late. The ouo aboard
leaned over tho railing and shouted:
"l'unip, Olio, yutnp; you cau make It In
two yumps."
This local Instance Is alike with a dif

more he Ilred his dhudeeu tho less dis
position It showed to burn, except be
tween beer Blgns.
Tho family wcro nil comfortable ou
tho upper deck nnd watchlug for tho
liege lord nnd paymaster when tho ma
chinery began to work and tho boat to
move. It was ilvo feet away when tho
belated passenger appeared, his face
ml and his pipe working like a smoke
stack, lie stood on tho edge of tho
dock, steadying himself and swinging
his nrms to glvo Impetus to a Jump,
wheu tho good wlfo Issued an order:
"Git back, Molke, git back, and mnko
a good run for tho Jump. Yez can never
make It Rtandlu'."
Mlko obeyed. IJy tho tlmo ho made
his run tho boat was twenty -feet off.
but ho mado n gallant effort, went out
of sight In his best storo clothes for a
bathing suit and came up spitting out
water and other things for which a
later explanation would bo required,
no scorned llfo preservers showered
upon him, dovo down and brought up
his pipe, swam to tho sldo of the boat
aud when safely aboard demanded a
reduction In fare.'
