PHTHISIS ON THE DECLINE.
Evidence that the Coinplnlnt la Sue
cumblnR to Medical Treatment.
Mortality statistics colluded lu differ
ent countries seem to concur lu giving
evidence of a steady reduction In tho
number of deaths from consumption
during the past half century. It may
bo plausibly suspected that the wholo
of the apparent gain Is not real and
that greater exactitude of diagnosis
and a more precise use of the term
"phthisis pulmonalls" tuny explain
away some of It. Still, we may thank
fully believe that a large part Is real.
We obtain support In that conclusion
by the general Impressions formed by
Intelligent old people, who, almost with
out exception, assure us they hear and
see far less of "consumption" now than
they did In the days of their youth. It
Is of great Interest to determine the In
fluences which have been at work In
bringing about this result. It may bo
said at once that attention to tho now
so fashionable doctrine of contagion
has had no material share In It sluco
until tho last few years no sort of pre
cautious on that score had been taken.
It Is possible, but perhaps not very
probable, that tho Inspection of butch
er's meat may have been Influential In
some slight degree. By far tho most
probable hypothesis Is that the gain has
accrued from tho Improvement In tho
general prosperity of tho raco which
tho nineteenth century witnessed. Dur
ing It mankind were, on the whole,
prosperous and In most civilized coun
tries tho houses, tho clothing and, abovo
all, the food of the community wcro Im
proved. To speak of England alone, those who
can remember what It was sixty years
ago assure us that the advance In tho
condition of tho working classes has
been very great. Tho food which Is
now obtained by nil Is more nutritious,
more varied hud less exclusively vege
table than It formerly was. Tho clothes
aro better and the houses n re (better. In
splto of tho fact that the ago has wit
nessed tho Influx of population Into cit
ies and large towns and n partial aban
donment of tho country, the facilities
for locomotion and tho cultivation by
both sexes of athletics and outdoor pur
suits have probably secured without
diminution tho advantages of fresh air.
As regards the use of alcoholic bever
ages, the age has witnessed vast Im
provement. While there has been no
diminution in the quantity taken, It has
been spread over n larger number. Ex
cess has become disgraceful and Is far
less common than It was, while what
may be. called tho tlletlc uso has been
maintained. Thus, then, wo seem to
come to tho conclusion that tho reduc
tion In tho prevnlenco of tuberculosis
has been duo to Improvement In gener
al stamina and advancement In tho arts
of civilized life. London Polyclinic.
