UP1 mnmm WANDERINGS OF FREIGHT CARS. llow the Hobo Ho'llng Stock la Eent All Over the Country. "The enr accountant Is n typical In stance of development In the railroad business, nnys a writer In Alnslec's. In the early days ho did not exist. The superintendent was supposed to know In a general way what was being dono with the company's cars. Tho custom was for railroads to carry through freight as far as tho end of their own lines In their own cars. Then It was transferred to the cars of a foreign line and so assisted on the next stage to Its destination. So much time, how ever, was lout In making the transfers that the needs of shippers forced up on the railroads a departure which has now become their general custom, Hall roads permit nil loaded cars to go through to their destination .without transfer, and allow one another a cer tain sum for the uso of the cars. This results In scattering the cars of the dif ferent roads over every section of track In tho country. It produces tho ex traordinary processions of many-colored travelers from distant lands that delight the eyes of youngsters at a railroad crossing. In theory, tho cars aro permitted to run through over foreign rondft to their destination on the condition that on their arrival they shall bo unloaded promptly and started on the Journey home. In practice, the freight agent Is apt to use the cars that are most han dy, regardless of their ownership. An agent In Minneapolis would hardly think twice before tilling up a Mnlno Central freight car with a consignment for Manitoba. The agent at Manitoba would not suf fer n pang of conscience when he found himself stulllug tho same Maine car with a cargo of supplies for Waco, Texas. Thus are begun the wanderings of a car to which, If It were not for tho car accountant and his memoranda, there would sometimes be no cm). It Is by no means easy to bring tho wanderers home. When tho Mnlno Central's car accountant learns from his reports that his car Is being unduly knocked about on foreign roads his first news Is that tt has spent two weeks In the yards at Minneapolis. A tracer Is at once forwarded to tho transportation department of tho rail road which Is believed to bo holding tho car. Ity this time tho car Is on Its way to Manitoba. A tracer follows It there, but with the similar result of tludlug that the car has been dispatch ed for the Southwest. A letter to tho company operating tho Hun out of Waco brings an answer to tbo effect that the car Is there, but Is being held to await tho disposition of tho con signee; or that It Is crippled nnd has been run Into the shops for repairs, or that It hns been loaded again, In which caso the company promises politely to unload it nnd scud it homo Immediate ly. Then tho car Is promptly switched off on to a branch lino for soma local consignee and Is not heard of again except by tho needy ngent who cap tured It, until It turns up In a tall-end collision in tho State of West Virginia. Luckily It Is not a bit Injured, and Is nblo to continue Its wanderings, pur sued by more and moro vigorously worded correspondence, until soiuo body sends It home. Hunily Waited Long In n busy little town In Forfnrshlro n couple had courted seriously and con stantly for years. At length Sandy had not only proposed and been accepted, but was getting a line new cottagu built for Mary A . One night while ho was visiting at her father's house Mury, In a playful way, showed him the "ticking" that was to cover their brnw feather bed. Sandy knew something about weaving, so ho looked at It critically, remarking at tho sumo time: "Weel, Mary, I really thocht yo had far better taste thnn that." "What's wrung wV It, I wnd llkcto ken," she replied. "It's no bouute, an' I dlnnn like It." "A' rlcht, then," Mary ndded. "Get n tick to please yourseP, an' I'll let yo ken when I want It." No more was said on the subject, but Sandy's enjoyment for that evening was over. Mary was very stiff, so ho took his leave sooner than usual. Next night ho did not call, nor the next, so time slipped by. Sandy now felt that he could not go back unless Mary ask ed him. She never did ask him, and tho two, who really loved ench other, drifted apart. Tho bouuto cottngo was duly finished, but poor Mary never crossed Its thresh old. They both remained unmarried, and very fow people know that a word or two from Mnry was all that Sandy II was aye wultlng for. Good Waxes) fur Cllovo Cutter. Tho cutters of tho great glove houses nt Brussels and in France earn higher wages thnn tho cutters of tho most fashionable tailors In London and Now York. So dlttlcult Is this art of cutting gloves that moat of the principal cut ters aro knowu to tho trade by unrue Htid by fame, and the peculiar knives which they use In the business aro so highly prised that they aro handed down from generation to generation as heirlooms.
