Newgate was r prison In the reign of King John. In 1423 the walls were rebuilt, nnd theso wcro destroyed two centuries later In the great Dre. Slnco then tho prison has ruinalncd Intact. Newgate has entertained some noted men, though not with their permission. John Stubbs win sent there by Queen Eliza beth for having dared address to her a letter of remonstrance against her Catho lic alliance. Among others who were Imprisoned there were George Lockvllle, the poet; William Pcnn, the founder of Philadelphia; Titus Oates and Dangcrfleld, Defoe, the creator of "Robinson Crusoe;' Sir John Hobhousc and a certain distin guished though not virtuous Individual called by various names, but best knowu to fame as "Jack Sheppard." Tho cause of tho demolition of the prison Is tho necessary widening of Nowgato street. CLOSE SHAVE WITH A BERG. Narrow Kacano of an Ocean Liner on Her Maiden Trip. The value of twin screws as an ac cessory to steering has been frequently demonstrated. A notnblo caso, In which tho Hamburg-American liner Norman nhi (now tho French liner L'AquItalne), barely missed destruction by collision with an Iceberg, occurred during her maiden trip on May 27, 1800. The borgs had been drifting down Into the,' steam ship lane, enveloped In fog, for several weeks. Captain Charles Ileblch, tho commander of the Normunula, thought ho was steering n courso far below tho perilous Iceberg region. Tho liner wus steaming at the rata of about seven teen knots when the lookouts on tho forecastle saw a great throo-penked lco specter materialize from the mist. Captain Ileblch, who was on tho bridge, observed, tho vision at about tho same time tho lookouts forward, shouting warning to tho commander, rau aft for their lives. Tho comman der shivered a bit as ho pictured tho destruction of tho ship against the- wall of tec. He ordered tho helm put hard over. Then ho ran to tho lover con trolling tho signal to tho starboard engine-room and signaled to thu engi neer to stop tho great machine and re verse at full speed. Thu ship swung as If sh'o wore pivot ed, Just grazing with her port sldo tho precipitous wall of tho berg. One young woman on tho promonndo deck who was sitting near thu rail drinking soup fancied that tho spuctuclo was chlcily for her amusement. She reach ed over Uic rail, so sho declared, and nlmost succeeded In patting tho berg. Shu was mndo nwnro of tho danger when the swinging storm of tho ship, assisted by a heavy Bwell, thumped against thu berg, splllhig thu soup over her dress. Tho port quarter gangway was smashed by thirty tons of lco that toppled on tho deck and somo of tho plates on the port quarter wero bent. Captain Ileblch said that If his ship had been n single screw there would have been little hopo for her nnd tho 1,800 souls aboard hor. One propeller rushing ono way at full speed and tho other churning tho other way, with tho aid of tho rudder, turned the ship, with in her own length. Alnslee's Magazine. Corporation with a Houl. " fc Bkb 1 Tho rlrst metal railway bridge ever erected has been removed from the posi tion It has occupied for nearly eighty years. This Interesting bridge was erected In tho jenr 1S1U across tlio Itivor Uauntless In England, at the western extremity of tho orlglual railway Hue at St. Helen's. The framework was entirely com posed of cast-Iron, resting upon ordinary stone foundations In the river. Much doubt exists as to the Identity of tho engineer. It Is claimed that the plans and specifications were those of tleorge Stephenson and John Dlxoa, while other suggest that a Mr. Storey probably T. Storey, at one tlm'e euglneerof the old Stockton and Darlington Hallway superintendent Its erection. At that pe riod civil engineering was scarcely recognUed as a distinct profession; the bridges erected previously to the year 1S25 were constructed by either arvhitects or mill wrights. From the early correspondence of Uo Stockton and Darlington Hallway It ap pears that lU'iwnl of Durham was the architect employed to build the Grst rail way bridge at Darlington, and It la stated that the tirst railway "kew" bridge one spaunlng the HIver Tees at Croft Spa was built by a millwright. In conse quence of developments in the coal trade In the vicinity the old bridge across the dauntless has been removed, and will be replaced by a more massive struc ture to carry the heavy mineral engines and loads now in vogue upon the North Eastern Hallway. The tirst Iron road bridge built la England U that at Iroa bridge, Shropshire, hlch was erected la 1 779. tho heat sonic one suggested laughingly that they looked as If they needed thu comforts of a shower bath. Tho sug gestion reached tho ears of President Frlssoll and Cashier Dean. They did not look on It as facetious, but ns sen sible. So shower baths wcro at once Installed In tho lavatory In tho base ment of the bank building, and under theso tho clerks wcro permitted to cool off at frequent Intervals as they chose during the superheated dnys. Relations between employer nnd em ployed have always been more cordial and friendly at tho bank and the thougbtftilness for the welfaro of tho clerks has been n frequent subject of favorable comment among members of tho Ilnnk Clerks' Association and sim ilar organizations. Tho Fifth Avenue Bank people them selves haven't had much to say about It, but tho bank clerks know that such things ns private lockers, bicycle stor age rooms, a substantial luncheon In a room , provided especially for tho pur pose, nnd at cost prices, nnd now bath ing facilities, do not at all lessen the Interest taken by those clerks In the routine work nnd tho success of the bank. Now York Times. Oil as) Fuel on Steamers. Tho use of crudo petroleum as a fuel for tho generation of steam on large ocean craft has had a practical proof of Its value and adaptability In tho voy ago of tho steamship Cowrie from Bor neo to London, n distance of about 10, 000 miles. The method adopted on the Cowrie was to'atomlzo tho crude oil at tho mouths of the furnaces by blowing It Into tho 11 res In the form of spray by means of steam Jibs, and in this way a complete combustion of tho fuol was obtained, A comparison was mado with the old system of coal fuel on this ship, with tho result that thero was found to bo a saving of over -10 per cent In the weight of fuel a day, and by tho reduc tion of work In tiring with oil fuel the complement of flromeu was reduced from sixteen to six. The spaco occupied by a ton of oil as compared with the samo weight of coal wnn much Iras, be ing thirty-four cubic feet for the former to forty-two cubic feet for the latter the coal being bituminous. Thero are considerable quantities of oil fuel to be found In Borneo, and It Is said to be superior to any yet found In Russia or tho United States. Cultivate a spirit of thankfulness.
