HfflTESHlJrlTS PACIFIC COAST NEWS AND COMMENT REP0RT8 OF INDUSTRIAL AND AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT IN OREGON, WASHINGTON CALIFORNIA AND IDAHO. Pacific Coitt Fruits. A recent roport from the- depart ment of agriculture ixt Washington touches lightly on fruit growing on the I'ucific const. Tho fruit industry, particularly in California, has grown to enormous proportions, tho climate and soil being splendidly adapted. In comparison, Oregon and Washing ton do not make much of a showing but indications point to a rapid growth in these states aa well as Idaho, and Utah. Fruit shipments East require a special railroad sched ule during tho summer, that from Oregon and Washington going to Green River, Wyoming, on passongcr trains and thcro consolidated with California shipments. Western Lumber Markets. Before July, 1002, it is estimated that 100,000 cars of lumber and shingles from Washington will find a market in tho East and middle West. In less than two years, a Northern Tacific oillcial predicts that shipments will reach 200,000 cars. As cars MUST bo provided for these castbound shipments, and as tho regular volume of westbound busi ness docs not rcquiro so many cars, westbound rates aro cortain to be reduced, so as to induco more liberal shipping. High freight rates, now so frequently spoken of, aro certain to bo reduced quito a bit during five or six years. California Mules Oo CasL A trainload of California mules were shipped East recently. There wore 000 in tho bunch and although it was not tho first consignment, it was tho largest. Tho Missouri mar- ket has 1k;cii drained by tho demands of tho Poor war and Wcstorn raisers luivo begun to profit thcroby. Theso mules will bo sold to foreigners, Southern planters, Eastern miners and railroad contractors in tho now Oklahoma country. Mulo raising promises to dovolop into a paying business, as tho market is firm and tho demand strong. Kansas Trlci Barley Hay. In some parts of California and Ore gon barley Is commonly cut and cured for hay tho samo aa timothy. Tho roport that timothy would sell for f20 a ton in Kansas City brought a demand for barley hay and 1,000 tons havo been shipped to that city horn California. Of Interest to Flax Growers. Minneapolis parties are considering tho establishment of a $50,000 lin seed oil manufacturing plant in Spo kane. It means tho addition of an other great industry to that city's manufacturing enterprises and will alVord a better market for tho largo crops of (lax grown in that section, which now must bo shipped East at considerable cxponso, but its by product tho oil cake Is ono of tho best known foods for hogs, nnd, if such an enterprise is located in Spo kane, this oil cako can bo secured at a considerably elieapor prico than it or corn can be secured from tho East. This by-product or residue is of tho greatest importance to tho dovolop tnont of tho hog raising industry in a country whoro thero is comparatively no corn grown. Free Rrcaditufs for China. Tho new Chinese tarilT admitting American breadstuff into that coun try, duty freo, will causo a boom in oxports from tho Pacific coast. For tho year ending July 1, over 2,000,000 barrels of Hour were sold in that country. ' This tariff ruling is of tremendous importance to tho wheat growers of tho Paoifio coast, coming, as it does, in tho face of tho biggest wheat yield on record. Big Wheat Crop. Ono of tho biggest things in tho West, nothing excepted, is tho wheat crop for 11)01, as near as estimated, Tho state of Washington alono is credited with 32 million bushels nnd exceeds all previous records. Oregon, California and Idaho will swell this amount to nearly ono billion bushels, worth to tho farmers not less than $55,000,000. Taken in connection with othor enterprises, equally aa prosperous, it begins to look as though too Tactile coast was tho most favored section in tho United States and tho world. Steel Lumber Steamer. Tho opinion has been general for years that an iron or steel vessel was not suitable for tho coast lumbor business, but a San Francisco firm is building a steol steamer for lumber trado on tho Paoifio coast. Tho new boat is to Iks of steol throughout with a cellular bottom, ISO feet long, 38 feet beam, 1 1 feet deep and to havo water tanks to carry 300 tons of bal last. Sho will draw 12 feet when loaded with 800,000 feet of lumber, and will have a guaranteed speed of 10 kuots. Tho uqw boat is to bo ready for tho spring trado and will run between Portland and Tillamook taking tho placoof tho steam schooner Tillamook, that was wrecked in Alaskan waters some months ugo. Big Lumber Cargo Recently From Portland. Tho steamer Adato was cleared recently from Portland by the Pacific Export Lumbor Company, with 2,808,200 feet of rough lumbor, val ued at .$28,080. She goes to Taku via Comox, calling at tho latter placo to coal. Tho Adato is an immonso merchandise cargo carrier. Opening Rich Territory. Interest has long boon felt in tho effort to open up tho section south and east of Tncomu, also west and south of Portland. Its timber ro sources aro of known value. Tho deposits of coal aro extensive. A number of mining properties aro awaiting shipping facilities, and tho extension of n railway there will bring out considerable agricul tural productions. Wealth will bo rapidly added to Western Washing ton and Wcstorn Orogon when rail way construction shall open up a number of naturally rich but practi cally inaccessible districts. New Naval Station. Tho Pugot sound naval station at Bremerton has boon officially desig nated as a government navy yard. Tho usefulness and excol lout work '"u" "iro is responsiuio lor tno jf ffiSlffTlK I ,ow , t,0 AmVQ q mmQ cxtcnsvo equipmont and apparatus. Tho larger ships of tho American navy, will, as hcrctoforo, bo sent to tho Pugot sound station for repairs in- stead of Maro Island. The Trolley Is Coming Efforts to solvo tho transportation problem in tho West havo led capital ists to project and operate tho trolley system. They aro cheap in compar ison with tho standard lines, not only in construction, but in operation, and they promiso to servo tho purpoao equally as well. A number of long trolley lines aio now in cotirso of construction in tho Pacific North west, chief among which is tho Clcar-water-Lowiston lino in Idaho. Scat tlo nnd Tacomn pcoplo expect to en joy a trolley rido from ono city to tho otner witiiin tno next six months over a now lino now under construc tion, ai j.a uranuo, ur., a company was formed recently for tho purposo ol uoing preliminary work on an olectrio road connecting La Orando with tho town of Covo, 1(1 miles away. A trolloy lino over 17 miles long now oporatcs between Portland and Oregon City. Another lino is projected between Milton, Oregon, and Walla Wulla. Money In Cherries. Edward Johnson, ono of tho most oxtonsive farmers of Whitman county, Wash:, has just finished harvesting and shipping his cherry crop and gives somo interesting fig ures on tho profits in growing chor rio. Mr. Johnson had 00 cherry trees on a spaco 180x108 fcot, and has sold over $500 worth of cherries from theso trees, in addition to thoso used for homo use. Salem's Public Buildings. Major C. F. Cramor, superintend ent of construction of tho now federal building, Salem, Or., says that tho great stool striko in tho East will not delay work on tho building. Tho stool work had boon shipped from tho mills before tho difficulties began. Tho stone and brick work on tho walls is going on steadily, but an increased forco of men will bo needed to com ploto tho building within thocontraot timo. From Yale to Idaho. Dr. Jay Q. Eldridgo, a member of tho Yale faculty, has .resigned his position to accept tho chair of mod ern languages at tho University of Idaho. An Extravagant Custom. In the Austrian court It is contrary to custom for perishable articles to appear twice on the Imperial table. The result Is large perquisites for the attendants. To one man fall all uncorked bottles; to another the wine left in the glnsses; to another the Joints, and to another still the game or the sweets. Every morning a sort of market Is held In tut basement of the palace, where the Vien nese come to purchase the remains. An Extravagant Custom.
