"Why, wlmt'H the mutter?" sniil she. "I nevpr miiw you cry before, excepting thnt time when I told yon I was jjoln;? to mnrry Henry," nml I'lla Intijthed u little, Kpltefnl lunch. "IIuhIi h," mild Afnry. noftly; nnd. Aim. Cnniphell, drawing Kiln to her Bide, told her of the Htrnngu discovery she lmd tniule; then heekoning Mary to nppronch, ulic Inlil a hand upon each of the young glrl'H headH, and htcMlng them, called them "her own dear children." It would he hard telling what Klin's rniotlotH were. One inoiueut she wiih glml, and the next she was sorry, for she wns so supremely Mlfili thnt the fact of Mary's helng now In every respr-i t her eipial gave her mure pnln tlinn pleasure. Of course, Airs. Campbell would love her best everybody did who knew her ev erybody hut Henry. And wlnu Airs. Campbell asked why she did not speak she replied, "Why, what shall I sayV shall I go Into ecstasies about It? To be mire I'm glad very glad that you are my aunt. Will Alary live here now' "yes, always," answered Airs. Camp bell; and "No, never," thought Alary. Airs. Campbell that evening tried to devise some means by which to ntonu for neglecting Alary so long. .Suddi nly n new Idea occurred to her, upon which sho de termined Immediately to net, nnd the next morning Air. Worthlngton was sent for to draw up a new will, In which Alary Howard was to slmro equally with her sister. "Half of nil I own Is theirs by right," iwtil she, "and what I want Is that on their twenty-first hlrthdny they nhnll come Into possession of the portion which ought to have been their mother's, while at my death the remainder shall bo equal ly divided between them." The will was accordingly drnwn up, Igued an I sealed, Air. Worthlngton keeping a. rough draft of It, which wns thrown among some loose pnpers In hit otllee. A few days afterward Henry, coming accidentally upon It, rend it with out hesitation. "Thnt settles It nt once," said he, "nnd I can't say I'm sorry, for I was getting horribly sick of her. Now I'd willingly marry Alary without n penny, but IOllu, with only one-quarter as much ns 1 ex pected, nnd thnt not until she's twenty one, is n different matter entirely. Hut what nm I to do? I wish Aloreland wns here, for, though lie dun't like, me, ho wouldn't mind lending me n few thou- nnd. Well, (here's no help for It, nnd the sooner the old man breaks now the better. It'll help mo out of a deuced menu scrape, for, of course, I shall bu iniiKunnlmous nnd relense Kiln at once from her engagement witli n ruined mnn." The news that Alary was Airs. Camp bell's niece spread rapidly, nnd among those wlio came to congratulate her none was more sincere than William Header. Mary wns very dear to Mm, and what ever conduced to her hnppiuess added also to his.., Together with her he had heard the rumor of Air. Lincoln's down fall, nnd while lie felt sorry for thu fam ily 'he could not help hoping that it would bring Jenny nearer to him. Of this he told Alary, who hardly dared trust herself to reply lest she should ill rulge a darling secret, which she hud cherished ever since Airs. Campbell hud told iter that in n little more thnu n year he was to be the rightful owner of a sum of money much larger than she ever dreamed It possible for tier to posses. Wholly unselfish, her thoughts instantly turned toward her adopted brother. A pnrt of that sum should bo his, nnd with that for a stepping stone to future wealth Mrs. Lincoln, when poor and destitute, could not longer refuse him her laugh ter. Airs. Campbell, to whom alone sho coutided her wishes, gave her consent, though sho could not understand the self denying love which prompted tills act of cenerotlty to a stranger. And now Alary was very happy in thinking how much good she could do. Mrs. .Mason, her benefactress, should never want again. Sully Kurlmsli, the Liud-liearleil obi crazy woman, who had stood by her so long nnd so faithfully, uliould share her home wherever that home might be; while, better than the rest, Wll.l.iin Itender, the truest, best friend she ever lmd, should bo tepald for his kindness to her when n little, un known pauper. And still the world, knowing nothing of the bidden tauses which made Mary's laugh so merry and her manner no gay, said that "the pros pect of being nu heiress hud turned her head, Just ns It always did those who were suddenly elevated to wealth." CllAPTKU XXL Air. Lincoln had failed. At the corners of the streets groups of men stoo to-Ct-thcr, talking over the matter, nnd as cribing It, some to hU cnrelesHiiess, some to his extreme good nature in Indorsing for anyone who nsked, and others, the knowing ones, winked slyly as they said, "they guessed tie knew what he was About they'll known before of such things as falling rich;" but the mouths of those Inst were stopped wheu they beard th.it the household furniture, every thing was given up for the beuetit of his creditors, and was to be sold at auetluu during the coming week. When the day of the auction arrived, It required the persuasion of both Airy. Campbell and Alary to keep Jenny from eolug, she knew not whither herself, but anywhere to bo near nnd take one mure look at the dear old furniture as It paus ed Into the bunds of strainers. At last Mrs, Campbell promised that black Kira, who hnrfTccompunlcd her from Ohlcopee, should go and report faithfully all the proceedings, nnd then Jenny consulted to remain at home; though all the day sho seemed restless and impatient, wondoriug how long before Uncle Kira would re turn, and then weenlus as lu fancy she aw urtlcle after article disposed of to those who would kuow little how to prlte It. bout five o'clock Uncle Kara camt I home, bringing n note from Idn, sn In,; that the carriage would soon be round I for Alnry nml Jenny, both of whom must surely come, ns there wns n pleasant sur prise awaiting them. While Alary wns 1 reading this Jenny was eagerly question ing Uncle I'zru with tegard to the sale, which lie said "went off uncommon well," going chlelly, he reckoned, "to n tnll nnd mighty good-lookln' chnp, who kept bid ding up and up, till he got 'em nbout where they should bo. Then he'd stop for someone elso to hid." "Who wns ho?" nsked Alnry, coming forward and Joining Jenny. "Dun know, miss; never seen lilm nfore," said Uncle Kzra, "but he's got heaps of money, for when he paid for the planner he took out n roll of bills near nbout big ns my two lists!" "Then the piano Is gone?" snid Jenny, sadly, while Alary usked how much it brought. "Three hundred dollnrs wns the Inst bid I heard from that young feller, nnd somebody wTIo was blddiii' agin him suid 'twas more'u 'twns wuth." "It wasn't, either," spoljo up Jenny, rather spiritedly. "It cost fivo hundred, and It's never been hurt n hit." "Air. Header bought thnt little fiddle of yourn," continued Uncle K.rn, with n pe eullnr wink, which brought the color to Jenny's cheeks, while Alary exclaimed: "Oh I I'm so glad you cun have your guitar again!" Here the conversation wns Interrupted by the nrrlvnl of the cnrrlnge, which enme for the young indies, who wore soon on their wny to Air. .Seidell's, Alnry won dering what the surprise wns, mid Jen ny hoping William would cull in the even ing, At tlie door they met Ida, who was uuusuully merry almost too much so for the occasion, It seemed to Alnry, as she glanced nt Jenny's pule, dispirited face. Aunt Martha, too, who chanced to cross the hall, shook Mary's hand ns warmly ns if she had not aeen her for n year, nnd then with her brond, white cup strings Hying buck, she repaired to the kitchen to give orders concerning the sup per. Alnry did not notice It then, but she nfterwurd reriiembered that Idn seemed quite nnxlous about her nppenrnnce, for, following her to her room, sho snld, "You look tired, Alary. Hit down and rest you awhile. Here, take my vinaigrette that will revlvo you." Then, as Alury was arranging her hall', she said: "Just puff out this side a little more there, that's right. Now turn round, I want to see how you look." "Well, how do I?" nsked Alary, facing nbout as Idu directed. "I guess you'll do." returnod Ida. "I believe Henry Lincoln was right when he said that tills blue merino and linen collar wns the most becoming dress you could weur, but you look well in any thing, you have so fine n form." "Don't believe nil her flattery." snld Jenny, laughingly. ".She's only compar ing your tall, slrn ler figure with little dumpy me; but I'm growing thin see," nnd she lapped her dress two or three Inches in front. "Come, now, let's go down," snld Idn. "And I'll introduce you to Jenny's sur prise first." With Ida lending the wny, they entered the music room, where lu one corner stood Hose's piano, open, and apparent ly Inviting Jenny to Its side. With a Joy ful cry sho up rung forward, exclaiming, "Oh, how kind lu your father; I 'most know we cun redeem It some time. I'll tench school anything to get It again," "Don't thank father too much," an swered Ids, "for he lias nothing to do with it, except giving It house room, nnd one quarter's teaching will pny thnt hill!" "Who did buy It, then?" usked Jen ny; anil Idn replied: "Can't tell you Just yet. I must hnvo some music first. Come, Alary, you like to piny. (Jive me my favorite, 'Itosu Lee,' with variations." Alury was pnssiouutely foud of music, and, for the time she hud taken lessons, played uncommonly well. Seating herself at the pluuo she became oblivious to all else n rou ml her, nnd when a tnll figure for a moment darkened the doorway, while Jenny uttered n suppressed ex clamation of surprise, she paid uo heed, nor did she become conscious of a third person's presence until the group advanc ed toward her, ldu and Jenny leaning up on the pinuo uinl the other standing ut her right, a little lu the rear. Think ing, If she thought at nil, thnt it wns Wil liam Hrnder, Alary played on nntll the piece was finished and then observing that her companions hud left the room, she turned and met the dark, handsome eyes not of William Hender, but of one who, with a peculiar smile, offered his bund, saying, "I believe I need no Intro duction to Allss Howard, except u slight change in the n.uue, which, Instead of being Stuart, is Alorelund!" Alary never knew what she snld or did. She only remembered u dlaiy sen sation, lu her head, a strong arm passed around her, aud a voice, which fully uroused her as It called her "Alary," and usked If she were faint. Just theu Ida entered the room, announcing tea, and asklug her if she found "Air. Stuart" much changed! At the tea table Alary ut opposite George and every ttnio she raised her eyes sho met his fixed upon her, with au expression so like that of the picture In the golden locket which she still wore that sho wondered she had not before recogulted George Aloreland In the Air. Stuart who had so puxiled uud mystified her. Durlug the evening William Hender called, and soon after Henry Lincoln also came In, frowning gloomily when he saw how uear to each other were William and his sister, while he Jealously watch ed them, still keeping au eye upon George and Alary. At last, complalnlug of feel ing "blue," ho asked Ida to play, at the same time sauntering toward the music room, where stood his sister's piano. "Upon my word," said he, "this looks natural. Who bought It?" and he drum med a few notes of a song. "Mr. Aloreland bought It. Wasn't he kind?" said Jenny, who all the evening had been trying for a chance to thank George, but now when she ntternptcd to do so he prevented her by saying: "Oh! don't don't I can Imagine all you wish to say and I hate to be thanked. Hose and I are particular friends, and It afforded me a grent deal of pleasure to purchase It for her but," he ndded, glancing at his watch, "I must be excus ed now, ns I promised to call upon my ward." "Who's thnt?" nsked Jenny, and George replied thnt It Wus a Miss Hern- 1 don, who hnd accompanied him from New Orlenm, to visit htr mint, Airs. Uusscll. "He says she's nn heiress, nnd very beautiful," rejoined Idn, seating herself jit the piano. Instantly catching nt the words "heir ess" nnd "beautiful," Henry started up, asking "If it would bg against nil the rules of propriety for him to cull upon her thus enrly." "1 think it would," wns George's brief nnswer, while AInry's eyes Unshed scorn fully upon the young mnn, who, rather crestfallen, announced himself ready to listen to Idn, whom he secretly styles "an old mnid," because since his first remem brance she hnd treated him with perfect Indifference. Tliiit night before retiring the three girls snt down by the cheerful fire in AInry's room to tnlk over the events of the day, when Alary suddenly nsked Ida to tell her truly If It were not George who had paid her bills nt Mount Holyoke. "What n silly girl," suid Idn. "He wn perfectly nble and more than willing, so why do you en re?" "I do not like being so much Indebted to nnyone," wns AInry's reply, nnd yet In her secret heart there wns a strange feeling of plensiiro in the idea that George had thus enred for her, for would he have done so If She dared not fin ish that question even to herself dnred not nsk If she hoped thnt Gcorgo Alore lund loved her one-half ns well us she began to think she hnd nlwnys loved him. Why should he, with his handsome per son nnd princely fortune, love ono so un worthy, nnd so much beneath him? And then, for the first time, she thought of her changed position since Inst they met. Then she wns u poor, obscure school mis tress now fluttered, caressed nnd nn heiress. Years before, when a little pau per nt Chlcopcc, sho hud felt unwilling that George should know how destitute she wns, and now in the tlmo of her prosperity she wns equally desirous thnt he should, for a time ut least, remuln ig norant of her present condition. "Idn," snld she, lifting her head from the table, "does George know thnt I nm Airs. Cnmpbell's niece?" "No." nnswered Idn. "I wanted to tell him, but Aunt AInrtha said I'd better not." "Don't, then," returned Alary, and re suming her former position she fell Into a deep reverie, from which sho was at last aroused by Jenny's nsklug "if sho Intended to sit up all night?" The news thnt George Aloreland hnd returned nnd bought Hose Lincoln's piano besides several other articles, spread rapidly, and the duy following his ar rival Alary and Ida were stopped In the street by a group of their companions, who woro eager to know how Ueo bore the news that his betrothed was so ill, and If It wus not that which brought him homo so soon; nnd then the conver sation turned upon Aliss Hcrndon, tho New Orleans lady who hud that morning appeared lu the street; "And don't you think," snid one of the girls, "that Henry Lincoln was dancing attendance upon her? If I were you," turning to Alary, "I'd caution my sister to be a little wary of him. Hut let me see, their marrluge Is to tuke place soon?" Alury replied thnt tho mnrrlngo was postponed Indefinitely, whereupon the girls exchanged meaning glances and pnsseil on. In less th.in twenty-four hours half of Ella s acquaintances were talking of her discarding Henry on ac count of his father's failure, and saying "that they expected It, 'twas like her." lire long the report, In the shapo of n condolence, reached Henry, who, caring but little what reason wns nsslgned for tho broken engagement, so thnt lie got well out of It, assumed a much-Injured air, but snld "he reckoned he should man age to survive;" then, pulling, his sharp pointed collar up another story, nnd brushing his pet mustache, wherein lay most of his mind, he walked up street, and, ringing at Airs. Hussell's door, ask ed for Aliss Hcrndon, who, ruin as beau tiful, suffered his attentions, not bccauseH sho liked him In tho least, but becuuso she was foud of tluttery, and there was something exceedingly gratifying In the fact that at the North, where she fancied the gentlemen to be Icicles, she had so soon made n conquest. It mattered not thnt Airs. Hussell told her his vows were plighted to another. She cared nothing for thnt. Her life had been one long series of conquests until now, nt -.", there wns not in the whole world n more fin ished or heartless koqiicttc thau Kvrou Herudoa. (To be continued,) E. H. M00REH0USE GO.
