Whllo .that wan thu Ki't-atest lire In all probability that the chief lit destined to ever behold, and It was the most destructive, It did not equal In the element of per sonal danger tnuiiy others tlmt the chLf was called on to fight in his long con nection with the department. Denis Joseph Swcnle was born In Glasgow, Scotland, on July 20, 1834. There Is a story that the first thrashing he ever received was for burning a pllo of boxes near a stable, where he directed a young volunteer company with small buckets of water. When 1.1 he shipped on a sailing vessel for America. Arriv ing in New York In July, 1840, he came directly to Chicago. At this time the volunteer companies were In existence. The work that they undertook was n murvel ami u delight to the young Scot. On Dec. It, 1810, his naniu wus enrolled as a member of the volunteer department, and ho was made a "runner" with Niagara No. 3. In all thu months and years that have passed his name has never been erased from the rolls of the department. The second organization to which the veteran chief was attached was thu Ited Jacket company No. -1, which was famotiH In the early days of Chicago. In September, 1854, the Hod Jackets passed Into history and Mr. Swen.u leturned to the Niagara, where he remained until 185D. when he was made first assistant engineer of the department. In March he was iiindo chief engineer, and was assigned the work of orgunlzln the paid steam fire department, a mighty step forward for Chicago. He went to work, with the whole volunteer f'ce against him. In those days It was customary for the firemen to select at 11 regular assembly a chief, who was ac cepted by both political parties. On Oct. 1, 1873, the fire captain was mado first assistant fire marshal by the order of Chief Hcnncr. He continued in this position until July 3, 1870, when ho was appointed acting chief by the first Mnyor Harrison, and was confirmed by the City Council as fire marshal and chief of brigade on Nov. 10, 1870, which position he held until his recent resignation. NEW NAVAL TERROR. The 61 Ift French Armored CruUer Jennne I 'Arc. Frulico 1 10 nmves linn JtiHt put Into commission tho nb west naval terror in tho world, tho qrulHer Jeanne D'Arc. With her nIx funnels mid great length alio looks liko two ordinary warships Joined to gether. This strange craft Is designed to bo tho vulture of tho sens. Sho Is not to meet wnrshlpu In open battle. She Is to prey on the couiinereo of other nations. With her Wknot apeed she can overtake tho fastest transatlantic liners afloat. Tho big German passen ger ship tho DcutRchlund, of the Hum liuarg line, that has mado tho fastest FRENCH ARMORED CRUISER JEANNE 'D'ARC. day's run on record at the rate of U3 1-5 knots per hour, could oaslly bo over hauled by tho Jeanne D'Arc. Tho Kaiser Wllhelm der Grosse, of tho North German lino with her S'Jft-knot speed and tho swift Cunnrder Lucnnla, that has crossod tho Atlantic In llvo days and live hours, would also fall a prey to tho Jeanne D'Arc. Tho cap ture of a few prizes like theso from nu enemy's merchant marine might bo 11 greater financial loss than a naval battle defeat. Iudeed, the kuowledgo that such a commerce destroyer as tho Jeanne D'Arc were hovering unseen beyond tho horizon to waylay all ship plug would doubtless make more of a panic In tho enemy's couutry than tho nppearaneu of a whole hostile squadron of warships off tho coast. This new French mnrlno racer wns begun about three years ago. Sho was launched from the shipyards at Toulon lu June, IS'.)'.). Since then tho engi neers have been packing her hull with machinery, puttng her big trlplo ex pansion engines lu place and adjusting tho three shafts and propellers. The Jeanne D'Arc Is ns big as most ocean liners. She is B71 feet long, with a 03 foot beam and a draught of 2d feet of wnter. Sho has two military masts, with fighting tops; an armor belt of from three to six Inches In thickness, and decks of steel plating; so she need not be afraid of tackling any ordinary warship. Hut her special duty will bo to cover great distances, at high speed, and capture all commerce that she comes across. For this reason she hns bunkers that will hold 1,400 urns of coal. With this supply she could make three trips across the Atlantic without rccoallug. Her anuauieut consists of Mk- two 7luch guns in armored turrets on deck, with fourteen 5-lucli rapid tire guns, twenty-six smaller guns and two torpedo tubes. Sho carries a crow of O'JU men. Now York Journal. A l'loturo lor a Fee. Among tho "laughable experiences" narrated by the Itev. D. M. Steele, In his account of "Some People I Have Married," In tho Ladles' Home Jour nal, Is this one: "It was after my first ceremony. The groom shifted uneasily from 0110 foot to the other and observed that they were 'surely very much obliged.' 'You see,' he explained, 'we have not much money to begin life, but If things go well, perhaps lu n year -- we can send you somo present.' I bowed them out as graciously as I knew how, and forgot nil nbout It. Six months later I received by mnll a pack ago and n letter from theso people. They had not forgotten my kindness. And now that they wero In better circumstances they wanted to send mo something nut what should It bo? At last they had decided. There was ono thing they were both particularly fond of. They wero going to send It and hoped I would npprecl nto nnd like It. I found a cheaply framed amateur photograph of a cat boat on Long Island Sound. On the margin wns written In lend pencil; 'The place where we became engaged.' " Origin of "Grass Widow." Society In India, It appears from the lleugnl papers, Is being disturbed Just now over the origin of tho term "grass widow," and a considerable amount of research has beeu directed to tho subject. So far tho Inquiries mado have succeeded In tracing tho word back to the year 1S44, when It was used In tho Calcutta Revlow. In tbo opinion of qualified philologists the term Is a corruption of tho much older one "grace widow." This Is derived from "vidua do gratia," which mny bo In terpreted literally ns "widow by fa-J vor." London ews. World' Greatest Match Factory. Tho tourist travel between the East and tho Pacific coast has reached enormous proportions In tho last few years, and calls for a special class of equipment. To meet this demand tho Pullman Company has IbbuciI from Its shops what It technically calls tho "Pullman Ordinary Sleeper." Theso cars appear similar to tho regular sleepers, being built on the snme plan, but not furnished with tho snmo ele gance. They arc equipped with mat tresses, blankets, sheets, pIIIowb, pillow-cases, towels, combs, brushes, etc., requiring nothing of tho kind to bo furnished by the passenger. Each enr has a stove for making tea and coffee and doing "light housekeeping," and each section can bo fitted with nn ad justable table. A uniformed porter accompanies each car, his business being to mnko up berths, keep tho car clean, and look nftor tho wants and comforts of tho passengers. In each of tho trains which nro dispatched dally from Portland by tho O. R. & N. Co. Is to bo found one of theso "Pull man Ordinary Sleepers." Tho car at tached to tho "Chicago-Portland Spe cial" goes through to Chicago without change, and tho ono In tho "Atlantic Express" runs to KansnB City without change Passongors In this enr for Chicago chnngo to a similar car at Orangcr.
