Tlio criiHiulu Multilist tlioovil of guiii IjIIiiK, bo prevalent in certain quartern of tliia city, is cortninly being con ducted on proper lineo. Opened Hoiuetiine ago by a local moral int in a tiniHterly presentation of the awful re HtiltH of the policy wliieh permits the ("daliliidimcnt and maintenance of hiicIi places of direful danger to young men iiurticulnrly, although many mature pornoim should not he except o:l, it wu.s tpiickly rei nforcetl hy the co-operation of other niiniHters of the city and seconded hy leading citieim iuterested in the moral welfare of Portland. The war upon this vice is made upon the high ground that there is absolutely no virtue in the toleration of any evil which human strength and well-developed character may sup press; that gambling is productive of crime and destructive of good govern ment; that it benelltH no person ex cept those who rob the patrons of their tricks and devices, and them only to the extent of the ill-gotten dollars they practically pilfer from the pockets of those foolish enough to take chance at their games, Among the games of "chance" played in the great majority of these gambling dens are those at which it is impossible for the player to win, He is lead to believe that ho enjoys a chance to double or quadruple his money and, hence, lie learns by exper ience, for which he pays .dearly, that the chance to win a sum equal to that which he hazards is about one in one hundred thousand, Who was over known to leave ono of these hell-holes with a dollar whose foolhardiuess prompted him to play the money ho had left in the hope of winning back his initial losses? They are places in which even the ordinary chance is forbidden. They are attract ive dens where tho unwary is lleeced of his gold before he realizes that ho has scarcely begun to hiuard his hard earned wages, They are places where tho debasement of young manhood may be seen at almost any time which tho honest and shrewd investigator may choose to visit it for observation. If 1 1 100 who are promoting this crusade in behalf of the better morals of tho city desire to make a test of one case, why not pounce upon one of tho places, expose tho infamy of its meth ods, prosecute those who so unscrupu lously apply them and thus show to the world that there is a strong statute, mautaiued by virile ollleials, wlieh forever forbids such infamy? Can that not bo done? Does the pesiimist io moralist fall back in de spair at the suggestion that, if you "drown" a chipmunk out of one hole in the ground, ho will readily xcok refuge in another? 1'ur.suo him to the other; run him out of it, and to another and drown him out of that, and so keep him running until ho tdiall fall from sheer fatuge and star vation, Tho.o who have uudei taken the task of purifying tho city havoatsuiu 4d u heavy burden. If they Jiave not tho courage and strength of purpose to pursue it to a suoccssful issue, they may as well not undertake it. It is not an easy Jmatter to separate tho social dro.s from tho gold of society in a city of 100,000 people. It will require a combination of all tho iutlu onoos essential to tho upbuilding of tho moral character of the city to overcome tho peculiar inditVereneo of modern olHcialism, There is not a law in any state in tho union which lieenes gambling. It is a social crime which cannot bo HcoummI, any more than highway rob bery can be legalized Oregon has a strong statute against tho crime of gimhling., Apply it, by all means. V. V.
