Tho whaler Ilaht ena, of Sun Francisco, belonging to tho Pacific Steam Whaling Company, lies on St. Lawrence Island, 20 miles west of Southeast capo, in Rohrlng sea, a total wreck. Captain P. F. Cotto and tho 00 men in tho crew had an almost miraculous escape from death. Through tho bravery of tho olllcora all escaped to shoro. Tho JJulaena was on a voyngo to the Arctic. Sho was provisioned for 30 months. Tho whaler left San Fran cisco April 4. and, after battling with tho ico for weeks, had succeeded in working through tho worst of tho floes. Sho was headed to pass St. Lawrence island when tho wreck oc curred. Shortly after midnight, May 1, tho wind roso until it assumed tho strength of a gale, and tho whaler was driven to a point 20 miles west of Southeast cape, St. Lawrence Island, whero sho struck a rock. Tho cap tain immediately ordered the boats out. Tho whaler scorned to havo boon hung on tho rook, and, although tho waves wore pounding her terribly, sho did not founder. In a very short timo tho boats were manned and tho orow Btnrtod for tho shore. Tho sea was so high that it was impossible for tho boats to keep togothor, but thoy all mado tho island eventually. Acting Adju tant General Ward has received tho reports of tho ollleers engaged in ro cBtiiting tho five new infantry regi ments and tho five new cavalry regi ments authorized by tho army reor ganization act, showing that tliu regi ments are all practically recruited except tho Thirteenth cavalry, which is rojwjrtod to bu 3H9 men short.
