The tragic death of tho ex-Chief of Police W. L. Meredith in Seattle on Tucmlay evening at tho handri of John V. CoiiHidino, scrvcx to illus trate the desperate nature of the po litical situation in the Queen City, and the chance one takes against his life in swearing to the truth in behalf of the colored editor of an Afro American publication. The whole trouble between Meredith and Con Hidine was political. Editor Cay ton's weekly paper, the Seattle .Republican, had undertaken to cxposo the corrupt methods by which Chief of Police Meredith was growing fat in his iilllco by bribery from factions against which Considino and his friends had arraigned themselves. Cayton said something editorially which caused his arrest and prosecution for libel. During the progress of the case Consi dino appeared as witness against Meredith and in favor of Kditor Cay ton. The jury failed to convict the latter. Meredith was forced to resign from his olllcial place as chief of po lice. The result was the meeting of Meredith and-Consodine, Meredith's cowardly attempt, to kill his former friend and the tatter's fatal shot. Tho political feature of tho tragedy, however, has not yet been concluded. One of the leading citizens of Ore gon, ami tho man to whom much of tho credit for tho rapid upbuilding of Eastern Oregon is due, is Hon. J. M. Church, tho president of tho He publican State League, and an hon orable and polished gentleman, u con sistent and progressive business man of much more than ordinary fore sight and ability. Mr. Chiirah is president of the La Orunilo National Hank and is interested in many enterprises in Eastern and Central Oregon through which the state's ad vancement is being very materially assisted. As a politician of keen foresight and most trustworthy judg ment Mr, Chinch has no superiors in tlff state. Ills counsel is sought by , the ablest party men in Oregon ami his guidance ami leadership are that of a man thorough in touch with the needs of tho masfcs anil familiar with tliu best means of supplying them. No man in the state stands higher in the esteem of tlitiMt who know him, in-, business, in polities or in any le gitimate pursuit, hoeia, commercial or political, than does lion. J, M. Church. Mr, J, Edwaid Hawkins, a promi nent citizen of Seattle and a very in fluential member of our race in every walk of life, having successfully prae ticed law in the Queen City of Wash ington for many years and now hold ing an important place on the Repub lican Central Committee of King county, has been in tho city during tho week engaged in tho work of or ganizing a lodge of new degree in the tinier of Negro Masonry. Mr. Haw kins has met with excellent success in propagating a camp of Mystiu Khiiners for Washington and Oregon, many members of the local lodge of Colored .Masons, Enterrip.o No. 4 enthusiastically allying thonwlvcs with tho new oragniratiou of Shrin ers. Mr. Hawkins Is a very able and popular man and ho leaves no doubt in tho minds of those who meet him that his heart is in tho work in which he is now engaged, Juily;inn (rout tho inaiiiior in wliiolt ciuutiiluUut am Will); tunned fur iiroiu itu'Ut ptitiliu ollk'i'.s for Imtli local and ritato iilaivs, thu politicians nro eager to Infill tho fray for IH02, Thoro is littlo tlonlit that tho iinponiltnn cam paign will ho ono of tho wannest in tho history of tho ulato ami that n oonaiilnralilo nmnWr of now elements will hu interested in tho result, hnt tho nso of names of eminent politi oianti at this early dav denotes that tho factions feel that thoy can "kill olY" a few and still have it snllloient jiumtar of ambitious aspirants left, After assaying tho role of peace maker in connection' with tho Till-iniin-McLiuirin imbroglio in South Carolina, it will bo small comfort to Col. Uryun to bo denounced as a meddler, on one hand, and a half baked Democrat on the other. Hon. Charles A. Towno's oil octo pus is capitalized at $2,000,000. And yet, only a few months ago, Mr. Townc was ready to throw n lit every time he saw more than six figures in a row. Thero is a movement in Texas to send Dill Stewart to congress. Mr. Stewart is not exactly a plutocrat swatter, but his going to congress would bo a fine thing for that body. Tho French doctors who represent that tho internal anatomy of man is not arranged on correct proportions evidently belicvy that the creature may bo greater than the Creator. It Is understood that ono of tho reasons Senators Tillman and Mc Liuirin had for withdrawing their great moral show was to give the Charleston exposition u chanco. It is a close struggle to determine whether Andrew Carnegie, J. l'ier pont Morgan or tho American jockies are making tho biggest hit in Eng land. St. Louis is almost ready to begin the actual work of buying a munici pal lighting plant for its pulbic buildings. Hypnotism and psychic suggestion are two handy exeusses for those who want to escape responsibility for their acts. NEW NORTH- west ImIko, No. 2554, G. U. O. of O.
