SANQ FOR THE BLACKSMITH.
How Pnrepn Ifosa lle'peJ to Mend n
Whirnn Tire.
A writer In the Snn Francisco Call
relates an Interesting Incident of V&
rcpa Kos.Vs trip across the plains In
18G0. Tho party In the stage conch cou
slstcd of Parcpa Itosa, her uinuagor,
Carl Itosa, Do Vivo, two Mormons and
tho narrntor. Ono of the Mormons wns
talkntlrc; the other Is remembered as
tho Silent Man. It wis n glorious
moonlight night. Suildcnly, when tho
coach was "miles away froni any
where," a wheel tiro broke. The driv
er, says tho Call writer, walked sulkily
about his conch. The suggestions of
tho passengers availed not. Gloom set
tled down like n heavy fog over nil,,
and at last wo wero silent, having ex
hausted our Ideas.
Suddenly, upon the still night air was
wafted tho sad, sweet strains of "Bon
Bolt," and Parcpa Itosa throw her soul
Into It, and snug ns though an enthusi
astic nudlcnco wero awaiting to break
Into rapturous applause.
Sho stopped with a lati(4i. "At least,
let us make tho best of It!" sho cried,
In her Jolly way.
Tho pause which ensued was broken
by tho Silent Man, t
"Qoshl that wns great!" ho said, In
low accents.
But tho rest of us found It Impossi
ble to rlso to the sltuntlon.
"I kin mend that wheel," continued
tho Silent Man, after a moment, "an
I'll do It, Mrs. Itosa, If yer'II sing all
tho time I'm workln'."
"Oh, 1 will; I wllll" cried Tarepa
Rosa.
"It'll tako mo pretty nigh all night,"
said tho Silent Mnn, after a brief ex
amination of the damage; "but I'll do
tho woVk If you'll do tho HlnglnV.'
Wo all applauded, nud tho compact
was mndo. With tho air of an expert
tho Silent Man started work. It was
soon evident that ho was a master me
chanic, and we clustered around out
watched his skillful work.
"Within a Mllo of Edlnboro Town,"
"I Dreamt That I Dwelt In Marblo
nails," arias from "Tho Bohemian
Girl," and snatches of oratorios', Bong
after song rang through tho still night
for tho benefit of a very snmll audi
ence, and when tho singer paused tho
Silent Mnn, lacking Inspiration, also
rested. Tho nioro ho liked her selec
tion, the harder ho worked, and ho
progressed bo rapidly uudcr tho strains
of "I Know That My Redeemer Llv
cth" thnt It brought n trlplo encore.
The moon sank down to tho horizon;
tho first faint, cool Hush of dawn broke
In tho West.
Oft In tho stilly night,
Ero slumber's chain has bound uic,
Fond memory brings the light
Of other days around me
snng Parcpa Rosa.
"Great I" drawled tho Silent Mnn.
"Well, we'ro all hunky dorey. I guess
I've earned my concert, anil you've
earned your rldo, Mrs. Rosa."
"All aboard," shouted tho driver.
Into tho conch scrambled tho men.
back Into her seat sank Parcpa Rosa
with a sigh of relief, an 1 with n crack
of tho whip and a sudden, Jolt, on' we
rolled toward Salt Lako City.
JOHN MU1R AT HIS WORK.
Dlscorerles on the Mulr Glacier, Mude
in Solitary Htny of Two Yeurs.
"For tweuty-flvo years John Mulr has
nmdo out of doors his realm. For more
than half this time ho las lived nud
wandered alone over the high Storms,
through tho Yoxcmlto Valley, and
among the glaciers of California and
Alaska, studying, sketching, climbing.
At night ho sometimes rested luxuri
ously, wrapped In a half-blanket beside
a camp lire; sometimes; when fuel was.
wanting, and tho way too arduous' to
admit of carrying his piece of hlanket,
he hollowed for himself a snug nest In
tho snow. Ho is no longer a young
man, but when last I saw him he was
making plans to go ngnlu to the North,
to explore the four new glaciers dt-ov-cred
last summer by the Marrlmau Ex
pedition. ,
" 'What do you como hero for?' two
Alaskan Indians oueo asked liliu, when
they' hod nccompnuled him as far,
through perilous ways, as ho could hlro
or coax them to go.
" 'To get knowledge,' was his reply,
"Tho Indians grunted; they had no
words to express their opinion of this
extraordinary lunatic. They turned
back and left him to venture nlono
across tho great glacier which now
bears his name. So trilling a matter as
tholr desertion could not deter him
from his purpose. lie built a cabin at
the edges of the glacier, and thcro set
tled to work, nud to live for two long
years. He mude dally trips over that
ley region of deep gorges, rugged de
scents nnd vast moraines, taking notes
and making sketches, until ho had ob
tained tho knowledge, and tho under
standing of knowledge, that ho was
after, Mulr Glacier Is the largest gla
cier discharging Into the wonderful
Glacier Ray on the Alaskun const. Be
ing tho most accessible one In that
region, tourists are allowed to go
ashore to climb upon Its sheer, Icy
cliffs, and watch the many Icebergs
that, go tumbling down from It. This
Is a thrilling experience to tho glolm
trotter, but to dwell there beside the
glacier, to study the phenomena, en
counter perils, alone and unaided, Is
an expedience that fow besides John
