Mr. III11 Is the autocrat of the Great Northern Hnlltoatl. Since Commodore Vamlerbllt'H time there hna not been so comiilote nn Instttnee of one-man power nt the head of n great railroad system as Is presented In the case of President II1II. He evolves policies and executes them, his directors bowing to his will with dlguilled hut unanimous docility. Men in tho employ of the Great North ern know thnt unless they satisfy James J. Hill their fate Is scaled. There Is no other court of appeal. And Pres ident Hill lias the reputation of being "very particular," to use the cautious phrase of his subordinates. One day Mr. Illll walked Into the otllce of a high olllclal of the Great Northern Itallroad, In St. Paul, and brusquely announced: "Mr. , I do not think thnt you and myself are well mated. Your successor will report for duty to-morrow." This high olllclal had been drawing n salary of ten thousand dollars per year font long time, nud lie had grown Into the belief that he was a fixture in tho Great Northern service. But, ho went without arguing the question with Mr. Hill. When James J, Hill was elected a director of the Krlo Itallrond a few months ago there was trepidation among many of the employes of that company, for tho report was passed from lip to lip that Great Northern methods were to be applied to the af fairs of the Erie. Mr. Hill Is cconooml cat as well as exacting. He does not believe In having too many bends of de partments, and he Is averse to hiring two men to perform duties that can be performed by one "quick and nlert" man. It Is the "quick and alert" type of man that has the least to fear from this pushing, dominating and success ful railroad president. In order to preservo harmony and a prosperous railroad cace In the Northwestern territory, Mr. Hill se cured n large Interest in the Northern I'aclllc Itallrond, which Is the Great Northern's natural rival. An effort was made to combine these two protwrtlcs under Mr. Hill's management, hut an adverse public sentiment and itntl consolidation statutes of the several States traversed by the two roads compelled n speedy abandonment of this project. No public sentiment nor laws, however, could prevent Mr. Hill ami his friends from becoming largo stockholders In the Northern I'aclllc. and now It Is the common belief thnt should a buyer come to market with sufficient money to pay for tho control of the Northern Pacific ho need nego Mate with hut two men, viz., J. Pier pout Morgan and James J. Hill. Within the pnst fow months Interests allied with Mr. Hill have iMiught largely of tho stock of tho Chicago Iturllugton and Qtiluey Itallroad, ami there am indications that In due time that prosperous system will be brought Into closer relationship with the Northern Pacific Alnslee's. SHORTENrD LIVES- Men anil Women MiouliI Not Die Under a Cm u-y. Almost all persons die of disappoint ment, personal, mental, or bodily toil or nccldent, says Pearson's Weekly. The passions kill men sometimes even suddenly. The common expression "choked with rage" hits little exagger ation lu It, for even thoiuh not always suddenly fatal, strong passions shorten life. Strong bodied men often dio young, and weak men usually live longer than the strong, for the strong uso tholr strength ami the weak have hardly auy to use the latter take care of them selves, tho former do not. As It Is with tho bwly, so It Is with tho mind ami the temper the strong aro apt to break, or, like the caudle, run; tho weak burn out. Man, of all aulmnls, Is one that sel dom comes up to the average. He ought tp live 100 years according to the physiological law, hut Instead of that he scarcely reaches an average of four times the growing period. The reason Is obvious man Is not only the motn Irregular and most Intemperate, nut the most laborious ami hardworking of all animals. He Is always the most Irritable, and there Is reason to believe, though we cannot (ell what an animal secretly feels, that, more than any other animal, man cherishes wrath to keep It warm, and consumes himself with tho tiro of ills own reflections. Honesty ami Kulrneas, Slmido Integrity, simple fairness, situ- nle Justice to rich and poor alike, civ- Ing to each one his rightful dues, striv ing neither to oversell nor to underbuy goods or labor, Incurring no debts hut such as to admit of being promptly met, ninl luring no one else to do so lo short, carrying out ln dally life the principle of honesty and fairness, is the. very best and most elllclent means of bciiellttlug the community, and tho only foundation on which to build a benevolence worthy of tho name. Self Culture. Orulilil Crttso In Japan. Tho orchid croze has struck Japan with as much violence as the tulip craze once descended on helpless Hol land. Tho Toklo Asahl describes a now variety, rather small In size, which en thusiasts contend for at the tale of $1,000 a leaf and upward. , Producer of Metals. Montana. Colorado and Arizona were ahead of California last year lu the ag gregate production of metals. The ag gregate of Montana was $59,000,000 aud of Colorado f4T.000.000.
