Tho manner in which tho Associat ed Press reporters devote more space to tho sensational than to unembel lished facts in their regular contribu tions of news is shown by tho care which characterizes their prepara tion of tho quite regular item con cerning the burning of a colored man at the stake in the South. Tho Negro criminal, like other criminals, should be speedily and fully punished for his crime, and tho punishment should bo strictly in accordance with the law provided for tho caso. Yet it is noticed that, in tho South, tho excep tion is made only wheji a black man commits a crime; and tho Associated Press never fails to supply u "scare head" for tho occasion. To those away from tho scene the crime is thus made to appear much worse than it is in reality. In tho caso of the Negro burned to death at Hartow, Florida, on Wednesday, the report could hcarcely make the crime appear to bo more atrocious than it was; but in cases of less importance, in which a colored law-breaker has committed only a minor ofleneso for which he is either hanged, or burned, or hutch ered piecemeal, just the same tho report is given to tho world in such an exaggerated way as to loayo tho impression that the colored people of tho South are a race of outlaws and savages without exception. Those who have resided in tho southern states and have witnessed these trou bles and subsequently read about them in the Associated Press reports know this statement to bo true. HEGINNING TO SIMMEH. Indications that tho political pot is beginning to simmer thus early are unmistakable. Tho Oregonian has brought to public notice several candidates for governor and one, at least, for K'oretary of state. Other aspirants for office may bo expected to bob up from time to tine. There's a merry time coming, and no mistake. An extract from tho Jacksonville "Times" may prove in teresting reading to some. To others it may lm as gall and wormwood. Hero it is: "Profcscor A. P. Arm strong, principal of the Poitland llus iness College, is visiting his mother at Jacksonville this week. It is said that his 'side lino' is to lay a few wiies in icadiuess to pull when the next Republican convent Ion meets. If this Is the cabO the Professor is wasting time in this section. His friends in Southern Oregon are as the leaves of tho foiest, and they need no coaching to stand by him. Ho says he is not a candidate for state school superintendent. Yet the exigences of polities may make him such." Mueli of Portland's present liiuin oial ttinbarrtifsinent and ollluial tur moil may Ih attributed directly to ri;auixed Kraft on publio funds. This is not suuuested as a lecent dis covery, but it is becoming a more generally recojjniml fact as the eon diton it has provoked ln-comea more commonly understood. Since tho Mieccssful leafier Is KononiUy well barricaded against sovereign intrusion, there is little hope that anything will bo done to rcleas.0 tho tension until tho next city election and then a new bet will Ik) put in. That's ono way out of tho precnt muddle, and about tho only way; but it's very much like jumping from tho frying jwn into tho tire. Notwithstanding Professor A. P. Armstrong's disavowal of intention to bo a candidate for the office of state superintendent of public schools next year, the newspapers throughout Ore gon arc urging that his past official record favors him unqualifiedly for that honor, to which Tho Now Ago gladly adds its assent. Professor Armstrong is u strong man in every sense in tho estimation of those who will name Superintendent Acker man's successor. The contest for favor in tho mat ter of determining long in advance who shall bo tho next Republican candidate for governor of Oregon goes merrily on. Wo now have in the list Governor T. T. Goer, tho in cumbent, Hon. Phil Mctschan, Gen eral Owen Summers and County Jugo Cake. There is ample timber in which to cruise for enlargement of this list, and it Is predicted that four more names will bo added later on. . Germany's attitude toward tho United States suggests that the loyal subjects of the emperor need a little more of tho American hog than they have of late been permitted to con sume. Uncle Sam is not sprinting around with a chip on his shoulder but ho might bo cajoled into a diplo matic scufllo without it . Tho allied forces after a pleasant sojourn in China, are leaving tho Celestial empire for their regular sta tions, but Conger, who they went to release, beat them homo by a neck long enough to give him time to start a boom for himself as tho only suitable person to bo tho next governor of Iowa. The official scandal at Manila has penetrated the ranks of sulordinato officers who aro now known to havo assisted in the crime of robbing tho government. Uncle Sam is noted for possessing much patience, but he objects emphatically to having his pookuts picked by his own servants. WONDERLAND OF THE WEST. Whit the White Collar Line Mai Done for the Local and Visiting Public. Tho Wonderland of the West com prises the vast and nietiiresiiiu region tributary to tho jrront Columbia river, tlic scenic wonders of wfiich aro not equalled clscwhcio on tho American continent, albeit that America is a land of physical beauty from the Atlantic to the I'acilic. An excursion on the Columbia, therefore, is a visit through the pret tiest and grandest district of nature's handiwork. The White Collar Lino has made it possible for the local exuurslonist who loves nature's beauties, or the tourist whoso travels aro not complete with out comprising a visit to tho great Columbia basin and the grand moun tains that surround and divide it, to see this wonderland in a day from Portland to Tho Dalles and return, and in another day from Portland to Astoria and return, on lino and licet excursion Imats, the best cuipped and most comfortable craft on thu waters of the Northwest. Tho rates aro low and every trip is a pleasure excur sion. Tho scenery nlong these routes is now in its most -inviting attire, its regal dress of springtime.
