IT HAS THE PROPERTY OF CAST ING OFF LIGHT. I boiphor.-acetico of Great Brilliancy In an Unknown bubttnnce Peculiar Deposit Cut .mo In a Montana Mine l'uxz.es tho Aasujera. Ilestdcnts of Bolso City, Idaho, arc very uiuuh excited over tho discovery of u uilucrnl which hus Illuminating power. The discovery wns uiudo by Ueorge I Ayreu, u well-known mining iiiuti of Uolse, several weeks ago In ouu of his claims about sixty tulles from Uolse. At the time he did not think much of the matter, and, therefore, paid no attention to It The further ho went Into the mine, however, tHe brighter the light became, until, after a few feet had been worked, It was uot necessary for htm to use a lamp. It was then that he took somo of tho mineral to Uolse and hud It examined by an assaycr. Terry L. Williams, of Uolse, who Is Interested with Mr. Ayres, was In Ta coma, Wash., recently and had n piece of the mineral with him. lie will have nn assay of it made and expects that Its true worth will be determined. "So far we have not been ablo to find any person who can tell what kind of mineral It Is," he said when exhibiting It, "and It Is for that purpose I have brought It here. There Is a largo body of It at the mine whero this was taken out, about sixty miles from Uolse City. Mr. Ayres, owner of the mine, fouud It four weeks ago at a depth of 1100 feet from the surface Ho was running a crosscut tunnel to tap his ledge at this depth, when he struck this deposit. "At llrst It attracted his attention by giving forth a dull light. As bo worked further In tho light became brighter, and tho end of three days' work ho was ablo to go ahead without tho aid of a tamp. Then the mineral becamo a curi osity and somo of It was taken to Uolse. It was examined, but thero has been no ono who Is ablo to tell Just what It Is. "Mr. Ayres took a piece of It to his cabin, and after night tried to ninko it show a light, but It wan uot so bright as It had been In the tunnel. This Is attributed to the atmospheric condi tions and Is undoubtedly true, for In tho experiments that have been made with It In Uolse we have been ablo to rcproduco tho atmospheric conditions In wafer that prevail when tho min eral Is fouud, and therefore It Is not thought Unit wo will huvo any trou bio In getting tho desired result. "So far as we have been ablo to learn, this Is the first of tho mineral over found In tho world. All assaycrs to whom wo have shown It say they never heard of It before, and thoy nro not ablo to tell what It Is. Wo will go ahead and try to put It to Rome use, and oven nt the present time arc reasonably suro of success. If It docs come out as wo expect, tho mine will be more valuable than we over believed. "Thero Is a large body of tho deposit, and the farther wo go In tho stronger becomes the light,. Another thing that we nro convinced of Ih that If It can bo mado practical It will be a perpetual Ulght, for In tho throwing off of Its rays more woes not appear to no any wnntu of tho mineral. Since tho discovery there has been a large number of vis itors to tho mine, and Interest In tho outcome Is being watched by all In tho vicinity where the deposit was uncov ered." Northw est Magazine. City Woman') Hummer Outing. "WutU tho average American woman who lives lu tho city needs most of all In the summer Is an entire change from what constitutes her life during tho winter," writes ICdward Uok, In the Ladles' Homo Journal. "She wants pleasure, for that Is good for all of us In moderate quantities, and particular ly for the housekeeper. She needs those healthy pleasures and that quiet content which enable her to occupy her mind with tho things around her and shut out nil thought of tho life behind her aud that which Is beforo her, so that when she Is ready to go back to her home she can tako up her duties again with a vigor and a zest born of new strength and fresh euergy. The last thlug n!ii! ought to think of Is the question of dress. She should have com plete Immunity from that of all thltigj. Now, every sensible woman knows that this rest and freedom from dress and conventionality are what her being re quires, and she likewise knows that these things arc not to be had at tho average summer hotel. Then let her keep herself and her children far away from this evil of our summers. She will save herself, her children and her money, and for what si:e expends In a quieter way, In somo real country place, whero the conventionalities and the evils that follow In their train are ab sent, she will get a double and triple return." Eye) of Criminals. ICach group of criminals has Its own peculiar color of the eye. Thieves and murderers usually possess "chestnut brown" eyes. Robbers that is to say, thieves lu a large and violent line of business bare slate-colored eyen, and the same Is stated of criminals convict ed of swindling. The vagabond classes have eyes of azure-blue tint. Tho color most observed among minor criminals and thoso convicted of slight offenses Is "chestnut-brown green." Infuutry. Tho term "infantry" soldiers origin ated with the Spanish, and was first applied to the military force employed by an Infante, or young rrlnce of Spain, to rescue his father from tho Uoors.
