ordained n deacon in 180(1 nnd came
to tho coast in March 181)7 and work
ed in tho churches of Southern Cali
fornia with good success, meeting tho
conference in Los Angeles, California,
in September, 18118, and was sQitt to
the Fresno and Hnnford church.
Finding tho Frenso work somewhat in
debt and only 14 members, ho tct to
work under God and rained tho mem
bership to ill) nnd 'paid every dollar
that was against the church. At
Hauford, he found no members nt all,
hut ho succeeded in raising a small
membership, redeeming the chinch,
paying the debt nnd leaving some
money in tho treasury. He raised
during his 18 months as pastor in the
Fresno nnd Hauford churchc, with
only 510 members, over $500 anil $18
general fund.
During his pastorate at Fresno he
was appointed by tho Dr. J. C. Col
bert conference president of tho Varick
Christian Endeavor society andorgan
ized societies in Fresno, Hnnford and
Itedding. The conference that met in
Portland, in 11)00, aptxmitcd this
young man to tho pastoral uhargo of
the First A. 51. E. Zion church of
Portland. On his arrival ho found
only eight members and a large float
ing debt and a mortgage of $1200.
I)y a united efTort on tho part of tho
pastor, memlerH and friends ho raised
during hto first eight months $524.85
nnd greatly increased tho member
ship. Ho met the conference at Itedding,
Cal., November 7, liMM), nnd was se
lected front among tho older preachers
to preach tho annual sermon. At
this conference ho passed rigid exam
ination iK'fore Revs. T. Drown 8. T.
I)., Geo E. Jackson A. 51, I). I), nnd
51. W. iJyinan 1). I)., and was recom
mended for tho elders order. He was
ordained nn cider by Dishop G. W.
Clinton A. 51. D. I)., nnd reappointed
to the church of Portland, in which

fer from tho California and Oregon
conference to tile Philadelphia and
Baltimore conference for which ho
