THE ANCIENT SPORT OF FALCONRY
The ancient sport of falconry Is Htlll
existent In partB of Englnndj and an
afternobn'a hawking nt' partridges re
cently wltriesn-ed by the writer 'Wab an
'enjoyable and quite uncommon experi
ence. The Untiring and most persever
ing patience In the training of the
ImwkB struck one most forcibly as (ho
port progressed, and It may bo Inter-
1 csling to give In a few words the meth
ods practiced, both Hi flying the birds,
' and training them for the sport.
To first catch your falcon Is the chief
difficulty, and some patience may bo
necessary beforo a nest Is discovered.
Mostly the eyrie Is built In somo almost
Inaccessible rocky cliff, and only a
trnlned and bold cllff-cllmbcr cau se
curo It.
Tho young falcons should be taken
when nearly ready to, fly, as when fully
Hedged they are able to feed themselves
nnd continue their growth without cod
dling. These youngsters aro brought
to their futuro homo and turned loose
In an open shed that Is, open In front,
but roofed against bad weather; hero
blocks of wood aro pegged Into tho
ground which sufllce for the twofold
purpose of roosting nnd dining tablo
for hereon tholr food Is placed by the
falconer.
Fresh, meat, rabbits, or dead birds
aro given them, and as tho days go by
the young falcons gradually learn to
fly, and In a short space nro seen soar
ing nbove their homo and swooping out
Into the Burroundlng country, and very
Boon they can fly many miles, but they
return regularly to feed when hungry.
This is tho most anxious period for tho
falconer, ns now tho hawks grow wild
er with Increasing powers of flight,
and rnugo farther and farther allcld.
Gamekeepers shoot a hawk on Bight
unless they happen to know it halls
from n neighbor's falconry. To obvi
nto such nn unhappy ending, and nlso
to moro easily recognlzo a trained
falcon when flying, loud-sounding bells
are fastened to tho hnwk's legs.
After four or five weeks of such free-

dom tho young falcons aro sufficiently
trong to be caught up, and tuU must
be douo ere tho native instinct of the
bird asserts Itself and It stoops at somo
natural quarry, such us n young pheas
ant or pigeon, for,' then feeling Its powr
ccs, It gradually forsakes the hoino
ehed nnd forages for Itself, So, beforo
this happens, tho falconer recaptures
his youngsters by snaring them with a
slIp-nooHo placed round their meat on
tho feeding blocks, and then, quickly
hooding them, they are taken to the
hawklng-housu nnd fusteued to tho
ground with ti leathern throng, there
to await tho next step In their educa
tion. Hero tho patience nnd temper of
tho successful falconer shows Itself
most conspicuously, for much weary
tlmo Is spent in Initiating tho young
sters Into tho business required of
them. To begin with, they are usually
taken out separately, and, n long
string being nlllxed to their legs, tho
hood Is taken off, nnd the falcon en
couraged to fly round In a clrclo nhovo
Its master. A pleco of meat or n dead
bird Is then thrown on tho ground, nnd,
is breakfast has been withheld, it Is
tempted to come down of Its own ac
cord. Tho falconer has to bo continually In
tho presenco of his hawks, handling
them, frequently, nnd dissipating all
traces of fear. For days and weeks
this will have to bo continued until tho
hawks arc qulto tinned; then thoy nro
flown nt a live bird, nnd so on, until
their education is advanced enough to
try thqtn In the field.
Five falcons accompanied our little
party for tho afternoon's purtrldgo
hawking, borno on a wooden frame
work by an attendant. A couplo of
ipanlels, a pointer, and n retriever com
pleted tho party, besides tho sports
men. The dogs quartered tho ground ns

the, hunting-ground was reached, and
one of the hawks was taken on to the
falconer's (1st and its hood loosened,
when, a spaniel flushed a covey, which
got up very wildly. Calling tho dogs in,
w6 marked down two of the birds, and
set after them as quickly as we could
go. As we drew forward to whero ono
of the birds had been marked down,
tho falconer ran forward, taking the
hood from his falcon, the dogs were set

till tho dog was on It, for fear of tho
hawk ahoe. With loud shouts the
falconer called his falcon to Its prey,
but tho warning was unnecessary, for
tho keen cyo of the hawk had seen the
bird, which was whlrrlng-rnpldly nway

All Ho Was tiooU For.
"I don't know whnt to do with that
boy of mine," said a father to nn old
collego friend, whom ho was visiting,
and to whom ho felt that ho could un
burden himself of his troubles.
"Ho Is utterly worthless," tho father
continued, "and I cannot do n thing
with him. Ho docs nothing but hang
around livery stables, and you know
what tho moral Influcnco of a livery
stable Is."
About ten years later tho two met
ngalu.
"How Is your son getting along?"
asked tho old collego friend.
"Did I never tell you?" said tho other,
with evident pride. "That boy, sir, had
buoIl. a decided genius for horses that
i let mm taKo to noraes ror a living,
He Is now a veterinary surgeon of tho
highest skill, makes ten thousand dol
lars h, year In his profession, and will
ho tho prop nnd support of Ids father
and mother In their declining years. I
tell you, there Is nothing llko giving u
boy a chance to follow his natural
bent."
This seems to show that a boy will
sometimes turn out well, In splto of n
father who does not know how to train

A Philadelphia!! of an Inquiring turn
of mind was Informed recently that
huiiiau bones soinctlines found place
with hones of the lower animals In tho
manufacture of hone black, which Is
used In tho process of rcllufng sugar.
After a thorough Investigation ho Is
satisfied that no human bones over get
Into the bono black, even by accident.
This Is not becauso of sentiment alone,
hut owing to the fact that bones of tho
lower animals turn black, while those
of the human being turn white, and
should any white flukes appear In tho
composition It does not servo Its pur
pose and Is discarded. Sometimes In
largd cargoes of hones from Bouth
America, where for nniny years cattle
wcro slaughtered for their skin, tho
hones of herders may bo found, and oc
casionally an entire skeleton, but In
sorting them In the yards these nro re
moved, and tho orders nro that the rem
nants of humanity must bo hurled.
When a married daughter comes
homo on a visit, she calculates every
tlmo she sees ono of her sister's gar
ments how It would make over for ono
of her children.
