Prof. IMclinrd Lynch (Jnrnor, who In liulloved to have died of Jungle fever In Afrlcn, wiiH lust lienrd from In the French Congo country, where In 1802 he ninde hltt famous obscrrntliiim on tho speech nnd hnblta of tho gorilla. Prof. Ouruer' liellevcd hu lind to hoiiiu degree mnntcrcd the Hpecch of the great nnthropoldM. hut In any event the record of what ho saw proved to be of tho most thrilling Interest. Taking tip his station In n great Jungle 200 miles long nnd Beventy-flvc miles wide, the professor built himself 11 steel rngu, In which he could find protection from the gorillas which wandered his way. He inndo the friendship of Onbuti, tho nntlvp chief of the gorilla country, nnd he won the respect of the French authorities. For fourteen months he remained In the Jungle studying the liablu of the large anthropoids. He then explored a considerable portion of this part of Africa. On his return In 18l).r ho published ns one of the results of his explora tions tho conclusion that the honlc of the gorilla In Africa lies In the Jungle first mentioned nnd In no other place. With hlin In IiIm cage Mr. darner kept a chimpanzee, which ho used as a means of lulling the suspicions of the gorillas. From the chlhipanzeo ho learned ten sounds, which he memorized. Those he used In addressing gorillas which came near Ills cage, and he became satisfied Hint the nnthrupolds used a definite langiinge In their conversations. He claimed that these animals had specific sounds for specific things. Tho ten vocal sounds lie had learned were used by tho gorillas to express their wants or sensations, desire for food, drink, nnd so on. He came to tho conclusion that tho anthropoid vocabulary consisted of some thirty sounds, each of which had mnny different meanings. In his experiments (Jnrner made use of tho phonograph with good results. With this Instrument he recorded tho speech of twenty specie of monkeys In the zoolog ical gardens of the United States, which he hud visited for two and ouedinlf years prior to his departure for Africa. None of these species would reply to tho language of any of the others. Ho had looked forward to great results from his present trip to Africa. The gorillas, ho said, were far more Intelligent than any other species of tho four kinds of manlike apes. MAURICE THOMPSON.
