HOLD YOUR BREATH. Thereby Ton May Avoid Being Drowned When In the t ater. "Whatever you do, bold your breath," Bald thu swluluilug master, when he hud half a dozen young women to look ufter at the beueh. "No one ever was di owned without tlrst strangling, uud theu tilling thu luugs with water lu u struggle that Is twice as llereo as au eUutt to hold ,the breath would be. 'If they can preserve their presence of ailud aud prevent dtawlug In thu breath they are siit'e. While above water the aircuubetaken lu little breutbs, almost gasps. When the water goes over they tun hold their breath and they will of a certainty come to the surface. "Look at thut girl with the red cap,' he remarked, pointing to a slight young woman who was Insisting on getting beyond her depth, aud who was com pelling her limbs to llud the wuy of pro pulsion. "She will learn to swim be causo she Is determined to, and she takes her time about It She will not ullow herself to be frlghtcucd, uo mat ter If she puts her feet down and does not touch the ground, alio knows that Ib tho way togct herself lu serious trouble nud so she keeps control of her self 'and Is calm all the time. When she cannot touch bottom she catches a little breath at a time aud tries to strlko out. Of course she goes under now nud theu, but she doesn't try to breathe uudor water, because alio knows she Is uot a tlsh. A Ush has gills and can uttal n the air from the water; but sho has lungs, and when Bhe tills them with water she gets some air. to he sure, for there Is air In the water all the time. But she gets too much' water at tho same tlmo and It doesn't 'do her any good. "If people would Just keep quiet and uot get excited, Just renutln cool and collected and hold their 1reath unless the nose Is above water, we uever would hear of a deatti by drowning. Of course. In the case of shjpwreck, or whenever one gets too much exhausted, thu holding of the breath Is out of the question. But I never saw nnyono'nt these beaches when It seems to me there was any excuso for uot learning to swim. There certnlnly Is no excuse for losing control of one's self, and get ting strangled, or becoming uncon felons. J? "Hold your breath." Chicago Even ing Post. There Aro Some Drawback. IIo wasn't looking for an argument Indeed, be undertook to make a remark that would pass unchallenged and without conditions or amendment. "Prosperity," ho said casually, "g a great blessing, Is It not!" "It Is, If you can keep It aecrct," an swered tho reasonably prosperous man. "But why should It be necessary to keep it secret?" "Becnuso If you are known as a pros perous man your debtors think you" are In no pressing need of tho money they owe you, your creditors aro of ttie opin ion that you should discount all obli gations, charitable Institutions go on tho theory that you hnvo money to glvo away, and you aro likely to have dllll culty In remaining prosperous very long." Thus we learn how difficult It Is to make a statement that can't bo chal lenged and at least In part disputed on souio ground or other. Chicago Post D AY A HENDERSON All Klmls ol FURNITURE.'....,.... FROM THE ETONS TO THE FULL LENGTH STYLES. Rarely-Graceful Golf Cape Now Made to Flop About the Kneca Fur Cuff Are a New Bubatltute for the Muff Tollncaf tho "Fashion. New York correspondence! 1TLISH coats do not Include inauy that are of medium length. Tin' protec tive garment for fall Is some form of the ctou, and wben severe cold comes It will give way to the three-quarter coat, or even to a garment that goes to the hem' of the skirt. The latest accepted form of ctou Jacket Is of moderately heavy cloth and Is lined with bright Bilk. Some of the linings are striking In col oring, so when the rovers are faced with a contrasting silk, which Is the stylish trick, there Is no mistaking that the garment is just off the reel. Iieticnth is worn a fancy or shirt waist of silk, In a third coloring, so oddly complicated color schemes result. ' The favor for these Jackets Is so prat thut they probably will be worn mo' or less all winter on the milder days. 1 Ve take the place of the bobbed-off coats of which there were so liiuny hi the lust two winters. Hut one of the best points of thu discarded garments Is kept for the newly stylish three-quarter coat. All these 'are comfortably roomy. In some cases there Is more or less of shaping In at the shies, hut rarely docs this glvo pronounced hip outline, ami always back ami sides lire loose. Other coats aro quite, ulong box Hues. Tho latter pat tern Is fccn lu the Initial Illustration, tho other coming lu the second picture. Iloth rough aud smooth, cloths are used for coats, the latter predominating and mak ing, on the whole, a better appeurance. Even tho golf cape has yielded to tho half-length craze, and now that never too graceful garment Hops about tho knees and Is very ugly, though exceedingly comfortable and warm. So let women bless the fushlun that permits It. These capes defy quiet taste and Maine more brightly than ever, with brilliant plalded linings, fringe and turn-over facings. Now nud then the plaldlng harmonizes with the outside. This I the only con cession made, however. Other new capes are double, triple or even In four layers, THKEE NEW STYLES OF BTYLWHNE8S. A HEIGHT IS PItESERVED Oil ACCENTUATED. have their corners rounded and are quite plain or freely stitched. A considerable proportion of the new muffs are big, and some flat ones have the far on the Inside, which seems sensi ble. The outside Is velvet or silk hand somely mounted with fur, usually talis, frills of fur escaping to fall softly about the wrists when the hands are Inserted. Muff chains are Superseded by straps of gold ribbon, with gold slides, and some times gold cord Is used. Cuffs of fur are considered more swagger than muffs. These are adjustable, and Into them chilly lingers can withdraw, or one can tuck her right hand into the left hand cuff, white the right cuff similarly serves the left hand, the edges of the two cuffs meeting. The effect is quite that of a handsome big muff. All danger of loss is avoided, so Is tho wear of the muff strap, which usually Induces a bald place on tin: shoul der of the fur coat. One result of the current fashions In gowns Is that everyone who Isn't positive ly dwarfed seems tnll. The naturally tull woman Is a regular spook, and short girls stand twice their height. It's all because of clinging skirts, the straight effect lu front and the long slant from waist to tip of train. The middle gown of the second picture was drawn In n way to Illustrate this point. It also included an other much used feature that makes for height In Its front panel. This was white satin embroidered In black and silver, the dress goods being pale gray habit cloth. Even when gowns have oversklrts the latter are usually and preferably so managed that a long unbroken line is pre sented from the waist downward. Take the seated figure of,thc third Illustration, The ovcrskirt of scarlet cloth' came near ly to the hem of a black paunc velvet underskirt, so little of height was taken. In the biscuit broadcloth .'opposite this oversklrt was of Rood' length at the sides. Narrow panels like those in the centrul gown of this picture do not lessen the ap parent height at all, and many such in various materials aro seen. These were gold lace and gilt braid, and were oa white broadcloth. houso dresses there, Is no falling oS In tho popularity of tho yoke, and the off-shoulder p'okc continues to flourish. A lovely gray house gown shows a perfect ly plain silk skirt shirred a little at the back, with sweeping hem and buttoning down the front. Tho bodice is knife-pleat-pleated silk, .drawn lu at the waist In u blouse and ending around the torso under the arms lu a very full ruff. Above are a perfectly laid lace yoke and sleeves, epaulettes of luce continuing the yoke oa the shoulders. The design of the luce Is so disposed that the lowuess of the yoke Is not embarrassing. A sash of pue green weighted with gold ferrets completes the design, which Is carried out in many va riations. Eor those who look down upon the off-shoulder yoke us a hold-over from summer, (hero arc quite different designs that use lace as freely us It does. One of these Is shown here by the seated flguro of the second picture. Here were nil In ner lace bodice and a bolero of electric blue cloth trimmed with gilt gnlonn nnd slashed to show the lace. Oddities In this general line are having a deal of at tention from designers, nnd may fore shadow the end of stylishness for off shoulder fashions. Not a few blouses are seen among the separate waists, especially In those made of French flanneL and clothes that show small figures. Very few droop over the belt more than a wee trace, and many In clude finish of sailor collar and plastron. Copyright, 1000.
