POISON IVY AND ANTIDOTE.
Spotted Toucii-Mc-Xot Hnlit to Counter
act the Ivy'a Lffecta.
Poison Ivy belongs to the sumach
family and derives Its botanical natuo
from the ancient Celtic "rhudd," red,
and the Greek "toxicodendron," or poi
son plant. The origin of the poison,
which causes great suffering to many
people, was for a long while a mystery,
as the plant Itself contains uo active
poison, us do many plant, but It uow
seems to be certain that the plant nour
ishes deadly bacilli, which enter the
pores of the skin and give tho poisoned
parts their characteristic appearance.
The three leaves are pale green aud tho
creeping plant Is to be-found lu many
parts of the Island of Moutreal. It Is
closely related to tho llhiis Venenata,
or "poison sumach," sometimes, also,
called "poison dogwood." Poison su
mach, however, Is n shrub, with the
drupe greeul8h-yellow and only grows
lu swamps. Its flowers are green and
It Is very polsouous. Tho ordinary
sumach, with red fruit uud crimson
hairs, Is not dangerous.
It Is said that some people cannot go
Into tho neighborhood of poison Ivy
without suffering from tho poison of
tho plant, while others can handle It
without any 111 effects. Many antidotes
to the pojson have been recommended,
as It affects different peoplo differently,
and among the most efficacious havo
been strong soapsuds and bicarbonate
of soda. One peculiarly painful result
of rhus toxicodendron poisoning Is that
wth many people 'tho parts poisoned
arc liable to bo affected for several
years afterward nt about tho samo
period tho disease was originally
caught This plant grows erect as well
ns decumbent, and lu the former caso
Is known as poison oak.
In addition to the nlds of tho drug
gist, howovcr, nature Is said to havo
provided a most efficient remedy for
rhus toxicodendron poisoning, In tho
shape of tho widely spread flower
known as "spotted touch-me-not," or
"Impatlcns fulva." It Is also called tho
"Jewel weed," and Is very abundant In
the water courses during Juno and
July, when the rhus toxicodendron aud
the rhus venenata aro most poisonous.
Tho color of tho flower of "spotted
touch-me-not" Is a deep orange aud tho
spots arc of a reddish brown. Tho Up
forms a sac, not very much unlike the
moccasin flower, and It ends In a
curved spur. Tho seed pods burst If
slightly touched aud scatter tho seeds
all around. To this peculiar property
tho plant owes Its common name. It Is
also called "noll-me-tangrc" and "n'y
loucjhcz pas." Tho remedy Is applied
by expressing the Juices of tho plant
aud applying the samo to that part of
tho Vklu which has been poisoned.
