A Chinese Ia-ention Remarkable for Ita simplicity. A calculator remarkable for Its sim plicity and Ingenuity urn entirely dlf fcrcut from other muclilncs which cm ploy a scries of tapes, has becu patent ed by Chow Ling Sltaug, of Macao, China, uud Is described lu the Scientific American. The device considerably simplifies mtiltipllcatiou nud dlrlslou. Our Illustrations show the complete apparatus aud onu of the tapes em ployed. Upon n base of wood or other materi al guides are-secured which form pass ages for a series of endless tapes. In our illustration the tupca are desig nated by the ltoman numerals I., II., III., IV., etc. tiacli tape is longitudin ally divided Into two columus aud Into groups of nine numerals each. In the llrst group all the llgurcs are zeroes; In the second group the numbers "1" to "U" nte Inscribed; In the third group tho number "2" aud Its multiples up to "18" arc written, the units being lu the right hand column aud the tens In the left hand column. In the next groups are the multiples of 3. 4. etc., up to the multiples of 0, nfter which the multi ples 1 to 0 appear In the center of the Inf'ft'WVKflnt I (JRT JWI Wl 'mTJK'M m 3 I a a o IcTio .is 01 OOOOOl) oo o oc oo(ioj 7fl 2.oo20 Z&QQ&oiq 8 21 ooooriooo oo 22i 2$ k 2L22f()0ie3o ii - HH .12 Q2 " " " oj (6) $ 2nL!e5 2 Zf (7 '. i"i"l"l 7 i4oiz -2--LII2"() 522-817 -i-:j,f-u...t nlm -i44..a2.5 ..t?S --.asei b b 4200.(2 - 2 . 2 . 2 2 - . When It Is desired, for example, to dud the product of eight times eight thousand four huudred nnd ninety leveu, tho tapes I., II., III., IV., are moved until the numbers "8." "4," "0." "7," of the tapes are on tho same hori zontal line, the other tapes. being left In their normal positions. In the eighth Hue will be found the number "fju" on tape I.; lu tho same line, tapo II. bears the number "72;" tape III, tho number "32;" and tape IV, tho number "01." The product Is obtained by noting for each tape the number con tained iu the right hand column of that tape, with the addition of the number In the left hand column of the next tape to the right. In other words, contigu ous numbers of different tapes nre added. Thus, lu tlio present case, "2" and "5" from tapes I. nnd II. arc added, "2" and "7" from tapes II. and III., and "4" nud (,3" from tupes III. and V. The result obtained Is "07.070," which Is the product sought. The figuring of other products Is readily understood from this example. To multiply by a number larger than 10, the well-known method of adding the results of partial multi plications Is employed. In division the calculator Is employed to find multiples of the divisor nud to do away with tedious multiplication. In dividing 212,425 by 8.407, for In stance. 21,242 Is divided by 8.407, as usual, giving 2 as the first figure in the quotient; the calculator may be used for this operation, since It shows that 11 (In the thousands) Is between the Intiblo (10.004) nnd tho triple (25.401) or 8,407. Twice 8,407 Is then read off as 10,004, and subtracted from 21,242, leaving 4,248. To this remainder is added the last figure. B; and 42,485 Is then divided by 8,407. The machine shows at a glance that 42.485 is equal lo 5 multiplied by 8.407. The result of the division la therefore 25. IlHkkia'a Mother. ''My mother's general principles of treatwaat," says Mr. Buskin, Mwtv to guard me with steady watch rut nesa from all avoidable pain and danger; and, as for tho rest, to let me amuse myself as I like, provided I was neith er fretful nor troublesome. "But the law was that I should find my own amusement. No toys of any kind were nt llrst allowed. Nor did I ever painfully wish for what 1 was never permitted for an instant to hope for, or even Imagine the possession of, such things as one snw In toy shops. I think It should be related that I was steadily whipped If I was troublesome. "lu nil these particulars I think the treatment of my childhood was entirely right. As soon as 1 was able to read fluently my mother begun a course of Bible work with me, which never ceas ed until I went to Oxford." How Mncoln Itebukcd II In Critics. At the White House one day during the Civil War, some gentlemen were present from tho West, excited aud troubled about tho commissions or omissions of tho administration.
